A Macrame Hot Air Balloon Lamp... Well, I tried

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Not every project works perfectly the first time (I mean, most don't), and this one turned out all kinds of lumpy and sad, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the process!

A bit of a safety note to consider on the "Stabilization" idea to keep it from deforming- I would say that the assessment is correct with adding the downward ropes between rings to keep it from elongating. However, that can bring up a safety hazard. Rope, organic or synthetic, CAN be flammable!!! I would recommend something more like wire, probably the same kind as you are framing it with. This may not be an issue with all bulbs but I also don't think it would be safe to use rope with most lamp types. PSA ended, Hope everyone has a good day!!!

That's a great point, thank you for bringing that up! Frankly, I'd recommend just using an LED bulb anytime you're making a lamp out of flammable materials at home - it definitely gives me peace of mind!

@@gettheetothestitchery I just wanted to make note of that because not everyone likes or may afford the LEDs, as they can be rather spendy. Though, yes, the LEDs would be safest. Just being aware of the scale, etc and you would be safe with any bulb. Just occurred that any fiber in "Burn" radius of the bulb could be an issue. If your not sure, heat test your bulb by leaving it on a while, maybe test to see at what radius distance your choice cord is safe with your choice of bulb, build your scale from that. Love your work.

If anyone else wants to do this, in addition to running straight vertical wires in the center, you may consider forming the frame around an inflatable sphere like a beach ball, you could even do the macrame over the frame on the beach ball then deflate the ball and pull it out before adding the vertical stabilizing wires.

I think it turned out pretty, especially when you turn the light on. I understand your pain on physics...my husband is always telling me why something won't work "because...physics" or didn't work "physics, dear, physics." I probably should just do it and not tell him first and just learn from my mistakes like you do. I do learn from my mistakes, but I usually prefer to work with patterns myself; I know you don't like them. Admittedly sometimes I read the pattern, look at the example, and then do it my way (usually on sewing, or recipes). I adore your videos.

I'm just around the 3:35 mark and wanted to let you know that there are switches you can purchase to install into the cord that plugs into the wall that moves the switch to where you actually want it. "lamp cord switch" brings up what I'm talking about.

You made a squid body! The balloon part would be an amazing squid lamp! 🦑

Love the video and I'm always amazed how you can figure out projects without a pattern. Used to macrame all the time. I've made wine bottle holders, hanging chairs and tables, and tons of plant holders and wall hangings (although years ago). When you're making 3D objects, you may have tried using varying-sized metal rings to create the shape of the balloon. This video (and your other macrame ones (I'm binging) has made me want to try it again. Big Hugs.

If you take the basket off and invert the balloon it will look like a cool giant light bulb also. Thinking "outside " the box. Lol

Thank you so much, you're so kind! I can definitely attest that most of my first runs at brand new projects don't end so well, but this is one of the first that I've really wanted to redo with everything I learned. It's always a process!

Whoa, watching this August '23, and right after you hollered "Smash that like button!" the like/dislike elements "lit up" with a candy colored border. I replayed it a few times and it did it every time. I checked another video and it did not do that. AI I guess. Very creepy.
