You must take away points from another player by achieving a good result in play against them. If the player is higher rated than you at the time of your game, a draw is considered a good result. Points are taken away from the player you drew or defeated, and points are added to your rating. The number of points taken from the other player is often the same number of points added to your rating, but sometimes it is different.
