Polestar got the brand identity sorted, it has planted geometry yet there’s continuity, there’s lineflow, it’s cohesive! It stands out on its own. Something a certain German brand fails to understand.

That Polestar One is the most stunning and gorgeous coupe that's designed in the most simplest way. Love the Polestar 3's back sweep of the roof and into the up swept rear spoiler, reminded me of '04 Citroen C4 coupe ( VTS had a top mounted rear spoiler ). The cabin does needs something natural ( wood, or a simple cloth motif ) that would make it just a bit more interesting.

The Polestar 1 is the 2013 Volvo Concept Coupe. It's actually a production version of it but with a lot of specialized body construction and Polestar tuning. There's wood in some of th e Polestar 3's trim but it is a dark-stained wood. I think Polestar should make another interior combination of a cherry or walnut stained wood but a more cream colored surface to contrast with all the black. Volvo/Polestar prefer "charcoal" interior but a like lighter surrounds, especially the header.

11:12 I agree with you but I found the screen in the Polestar 1 was on the contrary too small and there was excess furniture and too much graphic language on its surroundings for its integration into the dashboard (especially the large vertical chrome air vents on both sides). Now the Polestar 3 makes has a screen so large it cannot be integrated into the dash otherwise it would look like the one in the first Tesla Model S… The Polestar 3 touchscreen should have been a little smaller (like what Mercedes has done with MBUX 2.0 on latest C-Cass, EQE, etc.)

The Polestar is a firmer, more precise handling car with a different interior mood. Both are Scandinavian designs but one is much sportier than the other. Polestar will also run more expensive. Polestar won't be as high a volume a car brand as Volvo and Volvo isn't a high-volume brand. The new EX60 will be taller and nowhere near as sporty. It'll have a roomier interior. However, if there are still Polestar versions then And there may be a "coupe" version. But those still are likely to be taller cars.

  • @panameradan6860

totally absolutely agree with you on exterior (I'd give it a grade A) and interior (grade D at best). The "instrument panel" behind the steering wheel looks more like something in a $20k car, while the infotainment screen is also a cheap-looking iPad-glued-to-dashboard (cheap as in Tesla, Ford, etc.). And that dashboard is disappointing. As you say, the C40 has done it much better (though I hate all vertical screens in cars -- at least in Volvos the infotainment screen is more integrated into the dashboard rather than glued on as an afterthought). Horizontal screens are much more classy, more practical, and more appropriate for this price point. For this price point, I'd be generous to give Polestar 3 a "D" grade for its interior. And don't get me started on the glass roof (which I think are absurd to have standard). You could have significant cost savings and weight savings (not to mention increasing safety considerably) if you'd have an all-metal roof and 19-inch wheels as standard. Oh, and why do designers suddenly feel that physical buttons and dials should be eliminated? Look to Porsche, Kia, Mercedes, Toyota ,etc., to see how you can have a really practical and nice and safe mix of buttons and dials with infotainment screen. I think if you ask most people, they'll say they want audio and climate controls in buttons and dials, not in a touch screen, and federal governments should be enforcing this from a safety point of view. Touch screens needlessly and dangerously take the driver's eyes off the road for way too long when fiddling with touch screens for basic controls like phone, audio, and climate; heck, I can argue that it's safer to hold my iPhone than fiddle with my Volvo's infotainment screen when driving!

The interior is great past the screens. I hope the screens are passing for Volvo/Polestar but the new EX90 will feature a very, very similar setup to what's in this Polestar 3. But the doors, the materials, the seats, the stereo, the understated and grown-up Scandinavian minimalism in this interior is very sophisticated and not cheap. However, I would like Polestar/Volvo to consider going back to light colored headliners and not the dark "charcoal" they currently use. That would make the cars feel more open and airy especially since their windows tend to be on the smaller side.

Here are my little issues with the design: In the silhouette I find the blunt vertical front end unelegant. Look at the car at 3:42 and apply that to the Polestar 3, that would be more to my taste. The beltline is rather high, and raising to the rear, together with a falling roof the windows get smaller and smaller towards the rear end. An issue with a lot of current cars. As others have found out, the rearwards visibility is not good. I have a suspicion that with rear-view cameras, more and more manufacturers don't even try to design something that gives a good view out of the rear window any more. I know there are structural issues and it's much easier to design a crashworthy car with smaller windows, but still I don't consider that the right direction to go. Finally as a general lover of lightweight design ... I think it shouldn't just look lightweight, it would be good to be lightweight as well. I assume that's the hardest nut to crack.

Not a bad design but at $85k...it's a non starter for 80% of the people out there. Hyundai / Kia / Genesis offer the same if not more for WAY less. Eg. Fast charging 10~80% in 18 MINUTES (That's 40% faster than the 30 min of the Polestar and Tesla), V2L (can hook up regular appliances and even charge other vehicles), blind view monitors in place of speedo/tach etc. Not a bad looking vehicle but Volvo messed up with pricing..

  • @benjaminsmith2287

They don't offer the same. You can't look at Polestar and think Hyundai/Kia. Genesis yes but there is no competing Polestar 3 with the GV60. A Polestar 4 will compete with it price-wise but the flagship Polestar SUV should be expected to cost at least 80K. This is a car with air suspension, a Bower and Wilkins 25 speaker standard, and has a very high level of performance and premium qualities. If you know about Polestar Volvos, you'll know they were always priced at a premium compared to the highest level trim of Volvo. Just look at the pricing of a s60 Polestar or XC60 Polestar. It's almost the price of the Polestar 3.

@@dineshthangavel I'm sorry but Volvo and Polestar did not mess up pricing. EVs are expensive to build and they need to try not to lose a ton of money on these cars. They also don't sell at the volume that a Kia or Hyundai will and are small companies. That's why I'm doubtful of Fisker and they'll have to prove themselves. Stats only aren't the defining factor of why the Polestar costs what it costs. There's the complex air suspension, Bowers and Wilkins standard stereo, very sophisticated handling balance and 50/50 weight distribution, and all the engineering and safety aspects of the car that go beyond what you get in the lower priced vehicles. The Genesis GV70 offers a level of handling, ride, dynamic qualities above the Sonata for instance. The Sonata may be the better value but the Genesis is the more refined car. So you don't look at Genesis for value so much anymore as they're upping their pricing to BMW/Mercedes/Audi levels. It's not practical to expect a small cost in such a sophisticated machine as the Polestar 3. The Polestar 4 will be less costly but less sophisticated. The Volvo EX90 will likely start at 75K, as it is the flagship SUV. And, if people are ready for EVs, it'll sell as the XC90 is a pretty popular SUV.

@@benjaminsmith2287 Completely disagree. I think this Polestar looks fine but personally not a fan of the interior. I fully understand if Volvo is trying to market Polestar as a pseudo-separate upscale/premium brand but I'm not sure if the market is fulling embracing that positioning. I've been following Volvo for quite some time (was a big fan of the V60 before SUVs became a thing) and as a marketing guy, it's unclear what Volvo is trying to accomplish with 'Polestar'. Is it their answer to 'M' or 'AMG' or are they making it a separate sub-brand to compete with Lexus/Genesis? Tesla markets the Model Y as a premium vehicle (well, the pricing indicates this and maybe not comparable on the interior, fit and finish, etc. but the performance is certainly there). But people compare it to the Kia EV6. I happen to think the Tesla Model Y is one of the most AWFUL looking vehicles/EVs on the road today, which is why I would take the EV6 over the Tesla Model Y. Turns out, I'm not the only one: www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-y-vs-kia-ev6-electric-suv-compared-2022-10 Likewise, the Polestar looks nice, but I think the Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks equally nice from the exterior. I actually think the Ioniq 5 has a significantly better interior given actual physical buttons. I actually DESPISE having all your basic functions on a tablet in the center, even if there is voice controls baked in. It's such a lazy interior that lacks functionality and personality. This form before function is tragic. This Polestar is good, but at a projected $85k, it's absolutely laughable imo. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 starts at $44k so is it worth 93% more/double? Maybe to some, but I would guess not to most. Even if you go with a dual motor Ioniq 5, the price gap would still be massive. So back to comparisons, based on the reviews I've seen, I'd bet the ride of the Ioniq 5, as plush as it is, would be comparable to the air suspension of this Polestar. The Volvo's sound system would be better for sure, but the charging of the Ioniq 5 would be nearly 40% faster (18 min from 10~80% vs 30 min for the Volvo/Tesla), practical tech in V2L to hook up appliances (useful for camping), better tech (big fan of Hyundai/Kia/Genesis Blind view monitors - cameras in place of tach/speedo), better automated driving assist? (seen some vloggers say Hyundai's driving assist is the closest to Tesla and I think they'll pass Tesla in the future), a better warranty, etc. I'd bet the upcoming Ioniq 5 N will absolutely smoke this Polestar in straight line performance and handling too.. So yeah, you absolutely can compare an Ioniq to this Polestar and yeah, the pricing of this doesn't make sense to me..

@@alexandergoldman OK, since you have been following Volvo you know what Polestar is. And compare the price of a Volvo s60 highest trim compared to a Volvo s60 Polestar. Adding the Polestar tuning and Ohlins dampers and Brembo brakes, add in the Bowers and Wilkins stereo and what is the cost of that car? It's around $70,000 and that's not even an EV. I've see Volvo XC90s going for $80,000 and they aren't even EVs. EVs come at a premium so a Polestar with Bower and Wilkins stereo plus air suspension is going to cost a lot of money. I don't see the cost as a joke at all. Polestar is pretty clear to me. It's a cousin of Volvo but it is spinning off to a car that is more performance oriented and less luxury/family oriented. So Volvo gets the 7 seat large SUV where Polestar only does the coupe SUV. Polestar has firmer seats and suspensions. Polestar has a different type of style as well where it certainly has some Volvo elements but with their own sort of cooler (in temperature) settings and mood in the car. Volvos won't handle as sharply, brake as strong and are all limited to 112 or so mph where Polestar has a higher speed limit. I thought the Polestar 3 would cost around $78,000 to start so the price isn't that far away from where I thought it would be. The Volvo EX90 is likely not to be that much less expensive, not the dual motor version anyway. And I don't agree with your railing on the interior. If the screens look cheap so be it. But people who have actually been in the car that were at the reveal say the materials are excellent, as good as or better than what is in current Volvos. The screens aren't the whole car. I think some things like the stickers aren't so great and I think the car should have better performance. But I think they were time constrained and needed to get it out. So, right now it's not optimized. But I think in time, OTA updates will have the car in the 3 second 0-60 range, the car's range will climb up higher and maybe even the charging speed will increase. I think Polestar's styling is striking and impresses a lot of people and I think they may have surpassed Volvo in exterior style. I have to see what Volvo comes up with but the Polestar concept cars have impressed a lot more than the last Volvo concept car did.

A photo is a lot different than seeing a real car in the metal, in motion. Seeing photos of an interior is a lot different than sitting in the car, feeling the seat comfort and contours, feeling how the door closes, feeling the materials, going through the various switches and dials and so forth. (or sadly, screen interfaces on many newer ones) Sure, a Porsche is a known entity and quite a great car with an exceptional build quality. But the Polestar will offer a new style and may drive quite well. The car hasn't even been road tested yet to get any idea of what the dynamic qualities are. This may be a hell of great car to drive.
