The big problem with BMW
What’s going on with BMW?
In this video that’s exactly what I’m going to explore. I’m going to show you the golden era of BMW design and then compare it to today's cars and show you why BMW is heading in the completely wrong direction with its design.
I’m not just gonna say that they’re ugly and totally lack the spirit of what a BMW is, I’ll show you why that’s the case by going back in time.
Growing up, BMWs were some of the coolest, most confidence inspiring, beautiful cars on the roads. They were instantly recognizable thanks to the very strong and congruent design language all across the board from the gorgeous E38 7-series to the E46 3-series not to mention my favorite M3 of all time, the E46 M3 CSL and I can’t leave out the magical E39 BMW M5.
What a fantastic time it was for BMW both in performance, overall confidence and of course design.
BMW used to have a face that communicated strength and purpose. A face that said I will get you there. No matter the distance and even if we have to go through thunderstorms and blizzards, I will get you there.
That’s the feeling I got when I was facing a BMW growing up. If you saw an E39 M5 in the rear view mirror, you did the right thing and moved over.
The design was filled with passion and strong, unbroken lines connecting the front and the rear. Beautiful, powerful volumes that looked both muscular and athletic at the same time.
To this day, I don’t think there’s any full size luxury sedan that looks nimbler and more agile than the sleek E38 7-series. It’s one of the best looking sedans of all time.
This passion for automotive design spread all across the lineup of the time even to the more exclusive models such as the gorgeous BMW Z8 which was of course inspired by the classic BMW 507 of the late 1950s.
The rear end of the Z8 has to be one of the top rear ends of any BMW and would still work great today.
Then you have the introduction of what was called flame surfacing and the first generation BMW Z4. This design was penned by Anders Warming and has a beautiful flow to it.
Experiential and bold for sure, but it’s still clearly a BMW. Warming also designed one of my all time favorite BMW concepts of all time - the 2006 Mille Milja which is also heavily inspired by the flame surfacing treatment and the 1938 BMW 328.
The beautiful flow in the body lines and how it’s built up by long curvatures shows you it was sketches by hand.

They don’t make parts for any of the older cars anymore. They would need to get outdated machinery, and tools, just to build these older cars into resto-modded modern ones. It’s an insane idea. You're looking at it from your perspective. BMW's management is looking at it from the global perspective. And globally, you are not the focal point for them any more. The really weird thing is, whenever BMW is asked about it's design direction, they always seem to imply that the designs were customer lead, and the new cars reflect what people want. But then with every new BMW launched over the last 5 years or so, it seems like 80% of the feedback is very negative. There is clearly some strange disconnect happening there.

Back around 10 years ago, across my family's place, lived a female classmate of mine (shy, gorgreous girl, but not a romantic interest or anything). I was in year 10 at the time. Her dad had a silver E39 M5, with those iconic alloy wheels, leather interior with (im guessing fake? But quite quality looking?) wood panels. Anyhow, I would hear that car every morning he started it up, especially since their apartment block had an underground carpark, and the exhaust noise echoed slightly inside there... I ended straight up asking her dad if i could rideshare with them to school and he said yes... The conversations with the girl were a little awkward, but oh my god, her dad drove the wheels off the car between our places on the way to the school... That only lasted a little less than the school year (i think maybe 6-7 months total?), but it was absolutely awesome!!! Suffice to say, I've had a soft spot for E39 M5s ever since.

I'm so confused. When the BMW i3 and i8 came out, I was blown away. They looked shockingly futuristic and made everything around them look tame and outdated in comparison. It felt like BMW was two steps ahead of every other company with its exciting, unique new design language and I was excited to see how the rest of the automotive industry would react. I was convinced that I would start seeing bold, futuristic new designs everywhere as companies tried their best not to get left behind while BMW updated their lineup to look 10 years ahead of everything else and then... none of that happened? BMW did nothing with this incredible new look instead of carrying it over to the rest of their lineup, and the rest of the automotive world basically stayed exactly the same. Instead of embracing the interesting use of gloss black paint to create beautiful two tone looks, smooth flowing curves and bold strokes of color to accentuate body lines, we got the two giant holes and all sorts of sharp, jagged creases thrown onto the faces of otherwise curvaceous bodies. Makes no sense. What a wasted opportunity.

Perfect might be an understatement lol. I own the essentially the same car 2005 330ci ZHP 6-speed. I love my car but as a daily driver not really. My 2012 135i I wouldn't say that about either. When it comes down to it both my cars are BMW's out of warranty. Reliability is well. It's there in a sense. When I semi retired my 3 series after buying the 1 series it was costing me roughly $1500 a year in repairs and maintenance. Now I have owned my 1 series long enough that it too is out of warranty and once again I find myself in the $1500 - 2000 range in repairs in maintenance. In fact I just spent $2000 on a suspension refresh of the 1 series 2 months ago. Last year it was the cooling system. Year before that was the VCG. All on a car with under 60k. The problem isn't so much mileage as age. The 1 series is a 9 year old car now. Now drivability, yes perfect. Maintenance and reliability takes away from "the perfect daily driver" for me personally. Now if BMW made a car with the reliability of a Toyota then that would be the perfect daily driver lol. To own a BMW is to know that expensive maintenance and questionable reliability just come with the territory. I've owned Audi's and Mercedes in the past but I just keep going back to BMW. Sorry Audi and Mercedes fanboys there just isn't really anything exciting about those cars. In fact I bought a new Mercedes C Class in 2016 drove it for 6 months then traded it in for a used 1 series.
i don't really understand why many car manufacturers started putting very large grill designs specially BMW, when automotive is switching to EV and Hybrid. decades ago it was undersatable that those old engines need big air grills for cooling but now its not the case.

I am a massive BMW fan, the E46 M3, the M140I, the original M2, the E60 M5 and the 3.0 CSL are some of my favourite cars ever! I agree, the newer BMWs are mostly terribly designed and ugly, but like you stated, they are just going through a phase of trying to work out what they want to be in the future, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. What I don't understand is they must have some decent designers left (the people that do the 3 series, 5 Series/M5, and the 7 series) so why don't they just use those people on all the cars? The difference in design over the range shows they can make a great looking car, but just aren't all the time.
My all time favorite old school BMWs are the 2002 tii & the 635 csi. The lines are clean and they preformed really well. Especially the 2002 tii on Mulholland drive~ I slayed giants up there👀☺🤣

No one looks at my 2024 m440i convertible and says "I am so glad I don't own that" - only people looking twice and making positive comments. Got to spec it right with a good color (mine is brooklyn grey) with the shadowline package, red interior. It's a very attractive car. It can also be spec'd to look pretty ugly too. I'd avoid arctic race blue, red, black, green. White and brooklyn grey are the safest bets, shadowline is a must, black wheels to bring the design together.

The new Z looks decent, except for the grill. It looks like the designer made most of it but couldn't decide on a grill so put in a rectangle as a placeholder and went home for the day. His boss came in and saw it on his screen and decided to push it to the marketing department, assuming it was finished. By the time the designer came in to work the next day, the placeholder grill was plastered in all the ads, so they couldn't change it once it's out. They'll probably do a facelift (literally) and finish the grill.

I feel like BMW was really in their element when they made very parallel line-based designs. The Bangle era was BMW experimenting with curves and rounded edges, and they weren’t necessarily bad. But I feel like the current designers took one look at the Bangle cars and thought “guess we don’t need the old design language anymore, time to throw that all out the window”.

Cab you do such a design history video with.. Mazda. X5/rx7/8 cx series?
The designer received his termination notice via email. He left his mark before leaving. Hidden message. Management are clueless :)
I think this is what you get, when you design models based on data. I would assume the very different styles aim at very different target groups and markets at different ages and countries. Time will tell if it is successful.
I think many manufacturers have lost sight of what most cars are for. They are intended to get people from a to b safely and reliably. Changing the time on the clock and programming the radio are now a challenge and there are so many warning lights and so called safety features that they are too confusing to be easy to use.
Can you do a modern version of e36 pls
