The best thing about adapting older lenses or manual focus lenses is the subject/eye tracking while in manual focus and the ability to punch in for focus on the Zf!

I think Nikon’s system regarding the shooting style and dials is actually extremely smart. It allows you to switch between modes super fast without having to tweak every dials each time. Saves you a LOT of time and makes user experience much smoother. Well done Nikon !

Congrats, I pre-ordered mine but still didn't get a chance to pick it up yet as I opted for in-store collection. I live using this exactly as you mentioned, with the screen tucked in. However, if you miss the joystick, you can always map the rear screen to move focus points, which is terribly useful. You'll just end up with a lot of fingerprints! Enjoy!

Of course Nikon perfected the actual manual controls on SLRs back in the 60s and 70s. But I actually think Olympus did it better with the OM series by having the shutter speed dial around the lens mount - it’s brilliant you literally do not have to take the camera away from your eye to manually adjust SS.

After using an XPro1 since release, and the Df ( and D200, D3s, and now a Z6ii) I have to say I like how their controls work on (d)slrs, but the Fuji auto modes interface with the retro style is more intuitive. To me. But, I do LOVE my non-retro styled Nikons. It’s too easy to make them lie to you with the retro interface/dials.

Omar, Nice quick overview. I've recently made the 100% switch from Canon to Nikon. Have had the Z50 and multiple DX lenses, several Z FF lenses, briefly owned a Z6ii, and expected I'd be great with a ZF. Looked forward to the flippy screen and better IBIS. Loved the Z6ii files when i had one earlier. Put my pre-order in the first morning it was announced. Ten days ago our regional Nikon sales rep was at an area dealer with the camera so I went to check it out. While I would have preferred a Z6iii, given we'll have a longer wait for that, I was prepared to go with the ZF. I didn't expect to have issues with the ZF's ergos. (I've owned a number of Fujis and was good with those.) But when I actually laid hands on it, I was surprised at how negative a reaction to its body shape I had. It does feel very solid. But it is VERY hard to hold comfortably, even with the SmallRig accessory grip it still feels like it might slip from your hand. You feel the need to cradle it in your left hand, or you end up really squeezing it with your right hand. Contributing to the problem is that the leatherette covering is not the usual grippy material, but some slippery, more plasticky feeling material. The lack of any sort of bumper or edge on the back (to help cradle your thumb) is also really missed. Sooo, I cancelled my pre-order. Not sure what I'll get...buy a used Z6ii, or wait for the Z6iii? Moral of the story - Get your hands on one before buying from a place you can't return it to.

Nice overview, Omar. Glad you pronounced it “Zed F”. You made us Canadians happy. 😊 Seriously, one of the other strengths of the Zf is the 2.2” LCD screen, especially since there is no joystick. I’ve gotten so used to the 2.2” screen on my Z7ii that it is really hard for me for work with a camera that has a smaller screen now. Once you buy one and get the SmallRig grip, I’d love to see a size comparison with your Z8. My Z7ii with the SmallRig grip is actually pretty close to Z8 dimensions and I guess the Zf might be as well once the grip is added.

I had my hands on this camera in a store yesterday & I couldn't quickly figure out how the ISO dial works. There's a "C" setting that I heard someone call "Control," that I was hoping to map to Auto (like you show in the Fuji system), but the camera had an internal auto-iso setting ... & if that was set, nothing you set the dial to did anything, even C. Pretty confused, could d/l & read the manual, but imo it's pretty crazy confusing coming to it from a Z6. I tooootally agree with you abt the shutter speed dial in A mode, I'm getting older & forget stuff, that would drive me bonkers. I also don't love the 1/3 shutter spot, since I prefer adjusting in 1/2 stop increments on my Z6. Actually, I wish you could set it to full stop increments, so it better matched things during the film days & you could move quickly. I thought I was going to love & buy this camera, but somehow they messed up the controls so much it's 100% a deal-breaker for me. Why couldn't they just copy Fuji. Maybe next time, sigh.

One of the best videos on the Zf that I have viewed. And I really all the closeups of the function dials. I did notice on my Z5's that the lower button on the back is also lower than the other three. I don't care for the battery compartment and memory card slot combined and on the bottom. Nikon does that with the Z50 and it's the only thing I dislike about my Z50 and Z30. I like the Z5 having dual card slots, although I really haven't had a true need for it for my work. Your comment about lenses compared to the Fuji - I have the 28mm, 40mm full frame compact Z lenses. I also had the 24-50z. Although they are not "pro" version lenses, they are sharp and compact - and reasonably priced! Again great video, but will I buy one - No. My Z5's do me right.

I'm dying to get a retro look like camera and the only thing that is getting me alway from fuiji is the APS-C sensor. Maybe I'm wrong, but I do love FF cameras. This Nikon is going to be my next one, for sure.

5:10 The continuity bothered me also on my black Zfc, but then I bought the original Nikon grip and it fixes it. So I will do the same with the Zf, will order the original grip. It also adds more protection to the bottom.

I kinda agree on the feel of lesser robust build quality on the Zfc. I also own the Z9. Actually I never take photos with the Zfc. I have a tan leather case on it and leather camera strap so I just carry it on my shoulder cuz I look so cool. I heard passerby say "look at that guy Bill, he looks so cool especially with that retro camera with the leather, must be expensive!!" so you see you don't need to be cool, just have to look cool. Thanks Omar

I received mine yesterday. Battery had no charge. I kept pressing WB button because I was dying for a good hold for the body. Build quality is very good. I havent' figured out how to move focus point on touch screen while using EVF. Menu system is much better than my D850.

There seems to be a bug at 14:28: Zf can shoot 420 10bit instead of 422 10bit. This camera is selling like crazy in China. I've been waiting in line for half a month since I ordered it.

The wonderful sensor of the Z6II, combined with the Expeed 7 processor from the Z9/Z8, along with some new industry-first technologies...and all wrapped up in a well-designed retro body that apes the original Nikon FM/FE line of 35mm cameras? And real brass dials? More strategies like this, please.

The leatherette on the top prism section is exactly like the Nikon FE/FE2 which its design pays homage to and looks identical to. Nikon going "retro" of its own SLRs of the past would not have it any other way. Also worth noting about build quality, the top dials are made of brass, so years down the line it will age beautifully, just like the FE did with it's brassiness when the paint wears down, another true retro nod to It's heritage.

I like it. I agree with the slightly confused styling - leatherette on the prism bump yet lacking where the buttons are. And the function switch which disables the shutter dial in SP would definitely confuse this Fuji fan boy 😂. I do appreciate the fully folding screen so you can avoid "nose grease" on the screen when using the viewfinder full-time. Also good to know you can protect the screen when you put the camera in your bag. Would I buy one? If deciding on full frame, possibly. But as I'd need to ditch most of my Fuji apsc lenses at the same time, I'd also consider offerings from Sony and of course from Fuji themselves.

One unfortunate aspect of the 40 mm and 28mm is that they are not water resistant. I had considered taking the Z6ii and those two small lenses on a trip walking the Camino de Santiago, but it rains almost every day. Those small “fujichrome” have very good weather sealing. I was very happy with the Fuji on the trip.

I think Nikon's next step is to make a Z1 or Z3 that's like the X-Pro series.... but FF. I supposed for the rear LCD if you really felt like you had to, you could cut out part of a film package and tape it to the back of the LCD (like some people did with their film SLRs to remind them of what film was loaded (although doing so may make it harder to put the screen flat with the LCD facing you). I would say that while the Zf has a smaller grip, I think Nikon made the right choice by making it smaller, and then letting the user add a third party grip (like the Smallrig grip) later, but not force people to have a specific grip (some may prefer little to no grip actually) so the idea that they made this a "choice" was probably a good one. I would probably get the Smallrig grip if I get a Zf for the times when I want to use larger lenses, although I never found the grip on the XT20/XT30 to be a problem with reasonably sized lenses (like the XF 55-200) when I had it. The only people that might find the small grip a problem would be people trying to carry around larger lenses by just the grip, in which cas iwould say you should be using a strap instead (like a Rapid strap or something that connects to the lens itself). There's also a thumb grip you can get that fits into the hotshoe, like you can get for some of the Fuji cameras. I am a bit puzzled why Nikon didn't want t oput a joystick on the Zf. I know it was probably to keep it as retro as possible, but I think that would have been an acceptable departure (those who don't like to use it can just ignore it).

Me gusta tambien hacer retratos. Y me gusta viajar.

I considered going from the Z6II to the Zf, but I ended up upgrading to the Z8 and sold my Z6II to a close friend. The Z8 being shutterless was an odd feeling, but honestly it's cool af. I also bought a Fujifilm XT5 at tbe beginning of the year with an XF 33mm f1.4. My first time ever using Fuji, and I love it. The film sims are truly awesome and I hardly ever do any color grading on those images. Overall it's been a fun year for me with these cameras. Thanks for the videos, you give some really good tips and advice, and you've answered some of my questions before, as always truly appreciated.

How would you compare the quality of the dials to the xt5 ? I went for xh2 because the xt5 didn’t feel well built but I’m considering switching due to the low light performance on Nikons and the s line lenses, particularly the 20mm for night work.

This is an interesting camera to me. But, it's not because of the retro look. It's the price and the FF sensor. I bought a barely used, still in the box X-T3 kit two years ago(ish) because at the time it was a great price. I looked at other possibilities and just the bodies alone were lots more than what I paid. Since then, I was able to buy two really nice used lenses I wanted at great prices back in fall when all the new stuff came out and people were selling. Now, this Zf comes along with a FF sensor and the newest processor at a price similar to the X-T5. BUT.... the other piece that made me buy the X-T3 was looking at how expensive lenses were going to be for the FF systems out there. It just wasn't practical for someone who was an enthusiast photography in my opinion. I'm at a point where I only really want two, maybe three more lenses. One long reach for sports and a wider prime. I was probably going to start with the 23 f2 for that. I've been dreaming of a 50-140 and 1.4X extender. But, not sure about that one. Going to be interesting to see if FF cameras become more affordable. Thanks for the overview! Have a great week.
