I really hope she sees this comment. It sounds very likely she does have something medically wrong- Mast Cell Activation Syndrome MCAS. Patients with MCAS and especially mastocytosis can be hypersensitive to vaccines. The choking could’ve been anaphylaxis or could’ve been bronchospasms as well. They feel similar. Benadryl could’ve helped both (if it was mild anaphylaxis). MCAS can cause psychological symptoms. According to Ehlers Danlos Society 90% of MCAS patients have psychological symptoms from food reactions, including myself. And in her case she’s probably been nutrient deficient for many years which only worsens the food intolerances. I just wrote a paper on how ARFID is a dangerous diagnosis because it’s actually MCAS by another name. I hope she sees this and can get evaluated by a doctor who is well-versed in MCAS. She sounds self aware. She needs someone to thoroughly investigate her concerns, not someone to tell her the concerns aren’t valid. Even the reactions to water can be non psychological- due to the minerals in the water or the act of swallowing can trigger nerve issues. Hope she gets real help.

I wouldn't be so sure it's all in her head. Red alarms were going off "Eosinophilic esophagitis." It's what I have been diagnosed with by a gastroenterologist. No allergies show up on allergy tests. It causes choking, difficulty swallowing. It can only be diagnosed by an endoscopy and doing a biopsy. If you have more than 15 eosinophils they give you that diagnosis. It's a lifelong condition. I totally think this is what she has based on her history of needing epipens. It sounds so much like it. Allergy tests are all IGG mediated so they aren't catching the EoE which is IGE mediated. It comes out of nowhere sometimes in adults just as she described. Recently diagnosed in 90's. There is treatment for it - a short course steroid and avoiding your "trigger" foods which is usually dairy and wheat. She is eating a lot of that so that's probably worsening the whole problem and she doesn't even realize it. I hope she or her family member is reading this to get her tested and understand.

I have the same ED as her (ARFID), and it hurts to see how ignorant some people in the comments are. I noticed most of her "safe foods" were junk food which was very interesting as that's the same for me, which is why I'm particularly offended by these comments saying shes "faking her disorder so she doesn't have to eat vegetables". Its a serious disease, and not a logical one which is why a lot of the things she says doesn't make sense. The only real difference between her disorder and mine is hers is fuelled by the fear of choking, whereas mine is from the fear of vomiting.

I have had the EXACT same disorder as Vanessa for about 4/5 years. My life was very similar; daily panic attacks, safe foods, ''no no'' foods, chewing everything a million times, spitting food out and feeling if there are chokeable pieces in my mouth with my tongue, taking an hour or two to finish my plate, dreading going to restaurants. I used to survive on protein smoothies, blended veggie soups and baby food under the 8 months mark. It absolutely consumed my life, then I saw this on Dr. Phil. This video made me feel like I wasn't alone and that I'm not weird. I am so grateful that this disorder can be understood and cured. Nothing to do with attention seeking, body image. It's all about overcoming trauma, control, a fear of dying out of nowhere...

After I "recovered" from bulimia which turned into anorexia, I started becoming paranoid about food. I convinced myself that I was allergic to most foods, like dairy, gluten, treenuts, soya etc. I was so limited in what I ate that it became impossible to eat a meal. There were times I just ate Brazil nuts. I didn't realise there was a name for it. Thankfully I've had therapy for years so I knew I was bullshitting myself, I told this to my dietician and I started eating all these foods again. I do eat them daily but I still have that fear. It's more like, I think this food is giving me a reaction (I honestly believe it's making me ill) but I'm going to eat it anyway. I eat normally now, in fact I binge instead, but I wonder if those thoughts ever go away?

Saying "just eat" and "I don't see what the big deal is" just makes us feel wrose, like it's our fault and it's not. It effects our minds in a way you can't imagine and it not a choice

Seems similar to my OCD, since she fully acknowledges that it's all in her head, but she still feels the need to to avoid her anxieties. She should do cognitive behavioral therapy, and intentionally face her fears to teach her brain that it is overreacting. That helped me with my OCD about my breathing.

You are so important. So many peoples lives would not be the same without you. The world would be missing you. You are made for a purpose. You have things to do! You do not exist for no reason! Don’t give up! You are going through this for a reason. Your struggle can become your story. You are strong. You are resilient. Things will get better. Tomorrow might be better or worse, but even if it’s worse, none of this changes. Do not forget how amazing and wonderful and strong you are. Im praying for you! She honestly sounds a lot like she has Eosinophilic esophagitis. It’s an allergic disease of the esophagus that causes choking and swallowing issues. It’s a relatively new disease difficult to diagnose - and regular allergy testing can’t diagnose it. You can have no food allergies show up and have it. Only can be diagnosed via biopsy on endoscopy. It doesn’t sound like she has done this test yet but she should. It also comes out of nowhere

I remember watching this woman, and I thought it was silly how she claimed she was allergic to a myriad of food items and could only survive on protein shakes and candy, but now I understand her and her disorder. I've never had an eating disorder, but I understand the irrational fear that can spawn from something so awful that you never want to experience it again. I've had a similar thing happen to me: I used to get painful sore throats, and I became so superstitious over it that I wouldn't let myself touch certain things or speak in specific pitches. It takes over your life, even when you know that nothing will happen to you, and what this woman is going through is just that. It's been five years since this video was posted, and I hope that this woman has recovered.

I have ARFID, I also have anorexia nervosa (I am a very unlucky person apparently lmfao) so it’s a bit more complicated but yeah I relate to this woman so much, my case isn’t as severe as hers but the fear of choking and allergies is so relatable to me, I also have fears of getting sick/throwing up from eating, food poisoning, etc, it’s also about textures/tastes and sometimes presents as extreme picky eating. There needs to be more awareness about this disorder, it’s a real disorder and not just being picky and/or difficult, it’s probably one of the most common eating disorders in young children, and these kids are often just told off or punished, sometimes I go days without food (and sometimes water) because I have an intense fear of swallowing that sometimes gets really bad, I live on soft, beige foods and am so ashamed of it, especially as an anorexic that would much rather be eating “healthy” foods, idk why I commented this just wanted to give my personal story!!

I almost died due to Fear from my PTSD & Control Issues. I would have died in an Anaphylaxis if i hadn't Realized my Triggeres & sadly I had to do the work myself as my Therapists Realized Nothing, zero Input . She cannot Swallow due to Fear & until she solved her Control Issues is possible tht Food would start an Anaphylaxis unless she able to Control & Rise above her Emotions.

My sibling is a recovered anorexic, and while he was in treatment there was a girl with ARFID who came to the same treatment center he was in. He said that she looked sicker than anyone else there, but that she couldn't stay in the treatment center because the way you address other EDs is different than how you address ARFID, and she also wasn't physically healthy enough to stay as she needed to be on a feeding tube. This is a disorder that is very misunderstood and is absolutely real. She's not a picky eater, she's barely an eater.

It’s hard for people to understand why I don’t want to eat anything. I actually learned recently there’s a chemical released during the starvation process similar to dopamine, which causes a reward like response, in turn reinforcing the restricting. I dealt with an abusive neglectful childhood I didn't have square meals each day at a young age..we stole food to eat and ate anything we could find..I believe it was the lack of teaching us about eating and the lack of her not wanting to be bothered with caring about us that I subconscious have told my self I am not worthy of care I love good food I hate cooking anymore because I had to as a child till now, I'm 69 and tired I never was a bigger person I'm petite and 5ft 1 I have a stoma now from diverticulitis and some other issues with my gut and it being unable to maintain weight I'm seeing a gastro I'm currently at 78 pounds and I'm so depressed and unhealthy I have just wanted to give up. I have never said that but it is exhausting trying to figure out what exactly is happening. I have a scan tomorrow I have hope they can figure out what is going on and I see a great psychologist for help with meds. I can't thank who ever posted this episode. I have felt so alone and sad with the eating issues. I am not wanting to cook anymore it's so tiring but I buy ready made at the better local market.
