Mark, I think more people would agree with you if they hadn't of released four albums worth of material at once. If they trimmed the use your illusion albums down a bit and released 3 albums, a year apart from each other while touring in between, they would be considered top 5 by most, I believe. Of course, they were way too fucked up to have withstood that, but they definitely had the musical chops and Axl is easily one the most underrated lyricists of all time. They were my first concert and I love their music to this day.

No auto tunes in 1987 bro lol. Full on him I've seen him live 3 times and his vocals are just insane!!! Love to watch your reaction bro it reminds me of myself when I first heard this album 33 years ago. Amazing!!!! I voted GNR on that same poll. Another fun fact, The sex sounds in the background is Axl actually recoding himself having sex with the drummer Steven Adler's GF in the studio because he thought it would add more dynamic to the song. This was one of the many reasons that eventually led to the band splitting with Adler although the main reason was because Adlers drug and alcohol abuse were so bad that he couldn't learn the new songs. Also to answer your question about your poll and why people choose those other bands over GNR, its because those other bands had longer time periods together and made more albums with hits on all of them for the most part. GNR only made 2 albums with all their original members and really the second one called GNR lies wasn't a full album so basically they only made their debut Album with all original members. Now the main core of the band being Axl, Slash l, Duff and Izzy made a couple more albums togethers with the biggest being a double album called Use your Illusion 1 and 2 and those were amazing albums as well which they toured for over 3 years straight promoting those. However by the time the tour was over Izzy had also left the band was replaced so now your down to Axl, Slash and Duff but within 2 to 3 more years Slash and eventually Duff also left due to work on a new Album not making any progress and mostly due to Axl being a perfectionist and wanting to take the music in a different direction than Slash among many other issues they had. It was so bad between Slash and Axl that they didn't even speak to each other from about 1996 to 2016 When they finally buried the hatchet and ultimately reunited with Duff as well and has one of the most successful tours of 2017-2020 until the pandemic hit. If you get a chance watch one of the newer documentaries about the band and their history and it will explain everything more clearly for you. But I believe their history and the fact that they really only made about 5 albums with the most important members of the bands being involved is the main reason people chose those other bands over GNR. Me personally, I would take the music GNR has put out over 99% of the music those other bands out any day. I've never been a big fan of the Beatles, the Stones or Led Zeppelin while they all have a few songs I like. They just dont hit me the same way GNRs music does.

if you are just wanting every song to be "lit", then you are going to miss the nuances in 80's rock/metal. Think about it, the transition in this song slowed it down, changed the tone & calmed down the drive just to crank it back up. A lot of the great songs aren't going to be "lit" from the 1st note to the end, but they will build and build. Bands like Whitesnake tend to start slow/calm & crank it up by the end. Slow n Easy and Slide it in are examples. Skid Row can blow you away with Monkey Business and make you fall in love with I remember You. The Scorpians can blow your eardrums out with The Zoo while they Rock You like a Hurricane and make you cry with Winds of Change or Still Loving You. There's so much more to 80's rock/metal than being just "lit".

Great observation on the transition at the end of the song. In musical terminology, we call it the coda. Knowing that this was going to be the last song on the album, they didn't want to end on the dark sounding note of the early part of this song. They wanted the album to end on a hopeful note, and so they added the coda that you hear. This song is pure fucking magic.

That vocal effect you heard is called Flanger. It's the effect of playing the audio track twice at the same time but one track is constantly but slightly slowing down and then speeding up. It gives a 'whish'-like effect. Auto tune wasn't invented for popular use on vocals until 1998 on the Cher song Believe. Before then, however, there were devices called Vocoders and Talk Boxes that did similar effects but were more for subtle robotic effects.

At 4:50, LFR Jojo has the quintessential "mind blown by GNR" moment...took me back to that exact moment for those of us that lived through this album in real-time, song after song. GNR turned the clean, crisp glam feel of 80's Hair Metal on its freakin' head with Appetite for Destruction. Every damn song overstimulated our little brains and made us rock virgins all over again. In fact, that's why you didn't understand the significance of "Patience" and how it became ingrained in our collective psyche. You listened to that as your 3rd GNR song. We experienced the mega-hits on the Appetite album played all day long on MTV for over a year before Patience was released on the "Lies" album...and Patience was THE first song in which we heard Axl's voice in a "normal" state and GNR playing a rather normal song and it literally fried our comprehension of GNR all over again. Just ask yourself how many times someone can lose their virginity and you have the essence of GNR on 80's heavy metal.
