Very fair and good take, Jonny. I personally don't think that this is a good hire. JJ has no coaching experience and he will be in a very difficult position, especially since there will be much more scrutiny, attention, and pressure (than if he were to coach a different team). He's a smart guy, and maybe he will succeed, but I have my doubts. To me, this seems like a move to appease LeBron - and I have my doubts about whether he'd be willing to disagree with him or whether LeBron would listen. I know they get along well with their podcast, but it's a different dynamic and situation now with JJ as head coach. Great points about other coaches and their prior experience. The one thing I will add about Steve Kerr is that he was an executive prior to becoming a coach. I know that requires a different skillset than coaching, but, like Spoelstra (with his video coordinator work), he still had more experience going into the job than JJ. I like your suggestion of Sam Cassell. He definitely would have been a better hire - especially given his experience. College coaches have generally struggled in the NBA, but I think Dan Hurley - had he accepted - also would've been better than JJ. Great video, Jonny! Have a nice week :). Take care.

I don't think a rookie coach like him would be able to have the authority and be able to control an NBA locker room without any experience as an assistant. Especially not the locker room that Lebron is a part of. We all know Bron will be the one in charge if he stays. If JJ wants to have a shot at being successful, Lebron's got to leave the Lakers so that JJ can really be able to COACH and show what he can do.

It’s already established and etched in history that he worships LeBron and views him as the greatest/best basketball player to ever live and play in NBA History. He better use all those analytics, advanced metrics & stats to craft the best coach staff for himself and team for LeBron, since that’s his bread and butter. No excuses because every modern player is bigger, fast, stronger than they ever been due to evolution. These are HIS words not mine. He better draft well & use his genius to milk out every bit of modern talent from these players. And he has all the knowledge on and off the court to keep them healthy so no excuses.

The think the major issue is that the Laker's job just isn't a very desirable one right now. Everyone knows that the Laker's organization is trying to do what they can to retain LeBron. This signals to me that they aren't in it for championships right now but the revenue James brings into a team. Most great coaches aren't going to want to go into that feeling like their hands on are tired. Given the current atmosphere I actually think JJ is a great hire for them. He's a low risk with high potential reward. He obviously knows the game of basketball, is intelligent (sounding), and he knows what it is means to be a basketball player so he should be able to build good rapport with the team. If he is all that then this looks like a great hire in hindsight. If he falls flat on his face the Laker's can say they tried, let him go, and move on to the next chapter. I think potential star players they'll be looking into after James may also see this and go okay the Lakers will take care of me. We'll see though. This could go on to blow up in their face as well but I don't think there will be a lot problems causing from a JJ failure.

5:37 Indeed Steve Kerr inherited a much better situation than JJ Redick is inheriting. No question about it. However, he also made a good team a great team. People need to remember that the Warriors were only good under Mark Jackson and without any major changes to the roster, they became champions under Steve Kerr.

It's become a players League and MOST nba coaches are medicore at best. JJ is going to be fine and he is going to take input from lebron more than bozos like Darvin ham. Lebron has a great basketball mind and SHOULD have input. He has earned it, and proven that he is more than capable. JJ was also a very solid player who succeeded by understaning the game....not from his physical ability.

Not everyone starts the same but to be so territorial about your team you forget the love of the game first is corny. Regardless of what team I like I wanna see JJ be successful because it’s not often you see guy roll into a position like that. i mostly agree with you jonny. i think jj is pretty decent at analyzing the current nba, but he has no clue about the league before 2000. however, he is usually a huge cheerleader for much of what i find wrong with the current nba (3pt overload, walking and carrying, etc), and he has some really bad takes at times . leaving aside everything associated with these pathetic lakers and his obvious lack of experience, what i wonder is how is he gonna coach defense? i assume he will bring in a good defensive-minded assistant, because he was below average at best on D. unless he gets the ship turned around pretty quickly, and maybe even if he does, i have little doubt the deficient (i'm being REALLY nice there) lakers front office will make yet another boneheaded coaching change within 2 years. if there is turmoil in the locker room, it could be much sooner.

The Steve Kerr comparison is incredibly stupid. The Warriors had a great roster of players in their prime and fit well together. They were built to win at that moment. They had shooting, defense, star players, and role players that knew what their role was and played it to a tee. Then they added KD. The current Lakers team is none of that, nowhere close to being a title contending team.

One of the problems is that Bron would never concede that someone on his team is the better player. He takes more shots per game than Davis which is completely within his control as the team’s primary facilitator. He still sees himself as a league mvp candidate. He puts his legacy, or his perception of what his legacy is, over what is best for his team.

  • @showtimenick824

2:34 The Lakers 100% made this hire because LeBron is on the roster and he's being hired to be his yes man. If JJ does have his own reigns and he's not there to be a yes man, I can definitely give him a chance because his takes on basketball history may be terrible, but he does know the modern game extremely well. I can absolutely give him that. Does he know how to lead though?

Let's keep it 💯 LeBron told them to get JJ Reddick and draft Bronny or else LeBron leaving. So Jeannie Buss and Rob Pelinka will do anything to keep Bron happy. JJ will struggle in the beginning and probably call Doc Rivers and apologize for his past comments about his coaching skills. But JJ should definitely make sure he gets guys around him with coaching experience. Hell even ask Sam Cassell to come be his assistant coach or even Mark Jackson to help JJ. I give it 2 years he won't serve his full 4 year contract....

All of the greatest coaches you mentioned worked as an assistant before taking over. The only exception Steve Kerr is a unique case. Other than taking over a far better situation, he didn't have a coach killer with diva personality like Bron, the Warriors weren't a big market team like they are now and Kerr has played under the 2 greatest coaches as a player and has been a teammate of MJ and Tim Duncan, so he was able to learn every little detail from these guys on how to create and manage a winning team and culture.

Jonny I think you got this all wrong. I think LeBron is already gone and thats why they are bringing in JJ now as they reset the clock. An impulsive decision is not to hire a rookie head coach, it would be to hire a been there done that coach on the idea that you were just a coach away from competing for the championship. They were not a coach away they had no chance this year. So this to me is them acknowledging that and saying we're starting over and giving JJ a chance to grow into the quote on quote Pat Riley of the modern era
