This OVA is full canon. It doesn't matter too much to the main story, but it gives us a serious backstory to Levi and Erwin. The underground is a real place under the capitol i believe, the final place to go if the Titan's win. As for the end, that last bit, that expedition is the one kid Eren witnesses with Mikasa in ep 1, where they return defeated and commander Shadis(i think it's Shadis) begs forgiveness from a woman who's son perished. We've already seen him as the strict instructor during boot camp for the recruits. We find out later what happened as to why he's not commander anymore and why Erwin* is.

You would think Levi would prevent eren to witness the same event but I guess he wanted to have someone in the "have faith in us " PTSD squad

I will say that the speech in this OVA is shortened and has a very different feel to the one from the manga panels of this. It gives Levi a new light and helps him see things differently but whereas this one kind of felt condescending and like it wouldn’t have too much of an impact after ur essentially family just died. And a lot of reactors were confused on how that short ass speech helped levi. I would recommend looking up the manga for this ova and looking for the speech at the end specifically its actually way longer and a lot better than this tv adaptation version.

This is my first time watching this ova. A couple things peaked my interest. 15:30 Levi looks like Eren when he saw squad Levi killed by the female titan 16:46 Levi looks like kid Eren in season 1 episode 2 when hannes told Eren why he couldn't save his mother and why he, himself, couldn't save his mother. After watching this reaction to this ova, I think I know the reason why Levi's eyes glimmered when Eren told him why he wanted to join the scouts. Eren said that he wanted to kill all the titans and he had a crazy look in his eyes. I think Levi somehow personally related to Eren in this very moment and that's what made him want to keep Eren in the scouts. I think he wanted to see what Eren would do if he was in his shoes in the past. Levi still probably had a ton of regrets he never truly let go of. He tries to hide it, but it doesn't actually go away. I think eren's ability to not regret anything is what draws him so close to him. he's probably Erwin's ideal soldier.

When Levi said to Eren in the Forest that if he wanted to become a titan then he can, make a decision that he will regret later, was said very honestly as he also added noone can predict what the outcome is. Its the reason why he didn't show much reaction as he saw all of his squad had died, because he already knew that was also a possibility. P.S. the part where levi screams as he kills that abnormal is more emotional in the sub, maybe you could watch that part alone to see the difference. The voice actors in sub are too good.

The underground was mentioned during the female titan arc.

First off, this is canon back story. If you were not aware OVA's can sometimes be canonical, it just depends. Sometimes you get a character backstory that wouldn't really fit in to the normal season and they make it into an OVA. OVA's in general are very hit or miss though, sometimes they are mediocre and sometimes they can be absolute bangers in just depends on the anime. I would say that usually OVA's tend to be lighthearted or fillerish feeling episodes that don't hold a candle to the main story even if they are good, but AoT OVA's are different - especially this one. They can have very high relevance to the main story, and are also pretty high quality. Levi did lose faith in other btw. That's why he told Eren "make a choice you won't regret" and he said "he didn't know how it would turn out and never has". He even told Eren to turn into a titan if he wanted. It was mainly just Levi's squad who was so gung-ho about Eren having faith in them, not Levi. His friends being killed in the OVA from his decision to trust in them is exactly what that scene is referencing in season 1. As far as the underground, as far as I know it's just the one city under the capital that was completed (there are other unfinished underground sites though). They are mentioned a couple times in the anime, like when they were trying to lead Annie into that underground space of an unfinished site. It's just worldbuilding and meant to give a creative slum design for the capital and for Levi's backstory. You were surprised they didn't mention if before in detail, but that's because it's really not that central to the story at all. The underground areas could serve to shelter a very small portion of humanity from the titans, but remember that the area within the walls is MASSIVE. It's like an entire country. There are way too many people to all fit underground. Even if there was enough space, living underground permanently has numerous physical and mental health risks. You'd never see a civilization get serious about it unless they were facing unavoidable and certain extinction by being above ground. They would also just be fucked because most food production needs sunlight, everyone would starve. That being said if the Titans completely took over the surface of the capital, then yeah they would have to hide there or perish.

Idk why so many people getting so pissy over the dub. I always go back n watch the dub of any anime I watch, and AOT is easily the best. I think more reactors should do dub. I think ot would make for better content.
