That IS funny, but it also makes the fact that Lex never recognizes Superman's secret identity as Clark Kent to be slightly dumber. And before someone brings it up I'm aware that some people claim that Superman has a superpower of effectively having a psychic field that makes people not recognize him as Superman while he's wearing the glasses but I don't buy it.

Yeah it's annoying when people who are 'smart' somehow know everything about everything. Batman is supposed to he a detective, self aware and intelligent, but in the movie he was basically a brute, out of character. Same with Lex. He felt more like a cartoon than the actual cartoon, which isn't a good thing.

Superman doesn't wear a mask, and only Bruce Wayne has the money to afford all of Batman's gadgets, also he does get hurt and bleed occasionally DNA test are a thing. The fact that finding out who they are is apparently very hard is just a willing suspension of disbelief on the part of the audience.

(Edit)Figuring out Batman's identity is easy, especially if you follow his first years as a crime fighter where he was figuring out everything and likely made a ton of mistakes. It's true that the trope of 'being smart and figuring everything out' exists, but in Lex's case the man doesn't need to meet the Batman in person to figure it out, maybe to confirm it. Hell with Lex's money he can easily hire someone to go and collect a blood from a batman fight and find out who Batman is. Also Wally West isn't a famous person in the show, hence his face isn't something Lex immediately recognize.

I love that this show had Flash's VA speak as Luthor instead of just swapping voices. It's accurate to how it would work, more entertaining, and shows how good the VAs are at acting

Yeah, I can't stand how shows swap the character's voices. Not only is it more accurate, but it would be nice changes of paces for the actors to act as someone else and get them to show off how they can play different parts.

I’m fine with internal monologues still being the actor who plays the body, but it’s dumb if they do a voice switch.

It’s subtle, but I love how this plays into Luthor’s psychology of how he views superheroes. He equates power with importance, so someone as powerful as the Flash must be important enough to be immediately recognizable. It just doesn’t make sense to Luthor if one of the most powerful members of the Justice League is just some nobody.

Yeah because he knows who Clark Kent is and who Bruce Wayne is but Wally West is just a lab tech in a city he's probably never even visited. There's no way he'd ever know who he was. Literally of all the heroes in the original seven who had a secret identity he's in the body of the one guy he doesn't know.

Also I believe it was mentioned somewhere that, to make the voice acting more believable, the actors did the line reads for their characters first, and then listened to each other's reads of the lines, before swapping, so here, Rosenbaum is doing an impression of Clancy Brown's read of the line, while still leaving enough of his Flash voice to make it clear that it is Luthor's inflection with Flash's vocal cords. Equally, the other side of the story is Clancy Brown doing an impression of Michael Rosenbaum's line reads.

We don’t actually see them die, Lex hands the Anti-Life Equation to Darkseid and then both disappear in a flash of light which story writers for this series state that both were teleported to the source wall, integrated into the wall, and subsequently suffered death of personality

I always appreciate a show that has a body swap happen but doesn't just have one character's voice come out of another's mouth. Actually changing the tone and inflection of the original voice

Considering vocal training, accents, and ideas around how your voice is more a product of your environment, i'd actualy say it'd be pretty reasonable for the swapped person's voice to come through, if they're the same sex and roughly the same body type... it does feel weird though.

@@Jake28 That's.... Not at all how vocal chords work. They are still a physical part of your body and they determine how your voice sounds and it's range. And in the case of a theoretical mind swap, sure, maybe accents or inflections and mannerisms would come through, but the overall voice would be the same as the original owner of the body.

This is hands down the most accurate hero unmasking ever

Imagine Lex walking down the street and seeing this guy randomly.

I always love how this scene deconstructed the idea of a villain finding out a hero’s identity. Its only dire when the bad guy actually personally knows the hero’s civilian identity.

He doesn’t really have a personal animosity towards Flash besides annoyance and the only reason he want to do harm to him is a form of Revenge By Proxy on Superman who will turn evil if Wally dies (which is actually disfused in the universe considering the fact Superman didn’t right away kill Luthor after he sort of killed the Flash). If Luthor was like Grodd then he would definitely spend a lot of time figuring out the identity of the Flash since the gorilla is probably still pissed that some “imbecile” out smart him and put him in a mental coma for a couple of months.

@Jack Marsden You’re also forgetting that he is an egomaniac as when it comes to a lot of his character motivation for the crimes he commit it usually to satiate his own ego. What pleasure he will get from fucking with Flash through his personal identity? To him the Flash is just the comic relief member who by some weird cosmic chance is the key to the JL being good, and if he found out that the secret identity was some no name forensic scientist from an average midwestern city he would be underwelm about wanting to kill the guy whom he lacks personal animostity towards beside being an ally of Superman. I mean if it was Batman he would definitely do something considering the World’s Finest episode. Martian Manhunter due to his part in Luthor’s arrest in Injustice. But Wally? Not quite. Same can be said for Diana.

I think Lex Luthor just assumes that Superman is superman at all times. Like some kind off Earth's ruler or something like this.

This episode is my favourite example of the "voices are not mental" trope. It allows Clancy Brown to play a more comic character and Michael Rosenbaum to be a more serious, evil character.

I dislike it the trope as well but also understand why it's a thing, it makes it a lot easier to remember who's in who's body, especially when either switches happen in rapid succesion or when the events are spread out over multiple episodes.

IIRC in the Teen Titans episode where Raven and Starfire switch bodies they originally planned to have the voice actresses stay with the bodies, but they were both such good actresses that you couldn't tell. This one is pretty bizarre though.

I think that's done more for the audience, since it might be confusing as to who's who if they change bodies and voices. I always assumed the in-world, the voices switched too

I love the implication that Lex seemed to just assume Flash would be someone he personally knew.

Probably not personally, but he probably thought the Flash was somebody already famous for something else ;) After all, if you had Flash's powers, why WOULDN'T you abuse them to become the wealthiest, most legendary professional athlete in the world? @@rushink That is objectively true, yes, but remember that one version of Lex Luthor (was it this one, or one from the comics?) was told by the most powerful computer in the world that Superman's human identity was that of mild-mannered Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent, and he destroyed the computer because he assumed it must be broken. Luthor believed that if the computer was as powerful a logical analyst as it was supposed to be, then it would've known the basic truth of all humanity that (in Luthor's mind) if you are superior to other people in some way, then you need to show it off at every opportunity ;)

@@Simpson17866and at least one time Lex found out and *couldn't* refute it because he had achieved some kind of godlike powers and forced Superman to relive his worst day (Jonathan Kent dying of a heart attack), he switched up and got angry/jealous that Superman had better parents than Lex had 🤣

One of my favorite Justice League episodes ever. This part, and Flash as Lex saying he didn't wash his hands cause he's evil crack me up every time.

I like how Flash (at least Barry Allen) really was, and still is, some dude who just happened to be victim to a freak accident that gave him superspeed

Showing Wally being Kid Flash before becoming The Flash after Barry Allen died saving the world, though it wasn’t specified how he died or what he was saving the world from. In Justice League Unlimited you can also see Wally’s Kid Flash outfit in the background in his Flash museum. Not trying to correct you or anything btw, just an interesting fact

The EXCESSIVELY LONG pause of Lex looking at Wally in the mirror and contemplating if he can recognize the face, realizing he can’t and admitting out loud, “I have no idea who this is” is comedy gold. Almost like if this really happened in real life, I’d assume this is how it would go down

You just KNOW Lex was probably thinking the Flash was at least a big name in the athletic world because of his super speed, but nope. Just some random guy. It also makes him realize "Crap. He might not be the only one who I've never seen before".

The idea of a villain finally getting to learn how enemy's true identity only to find that he has no idea who the person is our how to find them out of costume, to his immense disappointment, is just hilarious. His whole plan goes off without a hitch and he's thwarted by the fact that his nemesis isn't famous enough to be immediately recognizable.

Fans: That's Wally West. DC: Did you say Barry Allen?

Its actually Barry Allen though. Wally west wast part of the original justice league Barry Allen was the first and the best fastest and most capable flash. The only thing wally had over Barry was precision and when you can outrun a nuclear blast is that really any good lol.

See, having a secret identity is only a real problem if you're someone who's well known, like Bruce Wayne. The only reason it's a problem for Peter Parker is because his deadliest enemies (Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin) know him personally, outside the mask.

Your mom seeing you isnt the worry its albert the mail man who saw your face then sees it again when he drops a package off a t your house because then everyone will know

I love how they have the VAs imitate the way the other speaks for this episode, shows real talent.

If this was Barry, Lex might've actually heard of him. Barry is (in most universes) a scientist of nontrivial renown. A rando supervillain might not know who he is but Lex probably would because of Lex's background and interests in science and technology. Meanwhile, Wally is... just Barry's Nephew lol.

The voice actor did an amazing job making Flash sound like Luthor. Even going as far as playing Lex Luthor in the entire series of Smallville just to get into character for this episode.

When you’re so lonely and average that not even a supervillain knows who your secret identity is: *”Task failed successfully!”*

All those years I always wondered why they never unmasked the heroes when they were captured and this little scene explains it perfectly.

The reality of taking a hero’s mask off is that unless they’re a well known figure to the public outside of superheroing then you’ve got a long while before you find out just who the heck they are

Luthor has a photographic memory so he will always remember the flashes face but never know who he is for his entire life

It's funny how many comments I see about this. It's pretty obvious that voices don't actually carry over in body swap episodes unless the characters react to it. It's like background music: It's purely for the audience's benefit, and only the audience perceives it.

@@magomandrake171 It's like those scenes where a character will do something so pointless, such as to pull a plot pivotal item out of their bag or something, just to immediately put it back so that you know that they have it, or when they show a bad guy going into a room with someone alone, and they come out disguised as that person having taken their clothes, but they still have a pointless moment where they go "look, I am showing you I am the bad guy and not the random background character. Aha! I bet you never could have followed along without such pertinent information!." Wow, that was a very long run on sentence/rant.

@@anonymousaccordionist3326 I get that but the examples you mention are short moments to guide the audience. The voice swapping is present everytime one of the swapped characters says something. It makes me cringe.

I love how everything from how he talks, to how he holds himself and facial expressions change while Luthor has Flash's body

If you had super speed it'd be pretty easy to be famous. Imagine if he unmasked to find Usain Bolt and suddenly you know why he won all those races! As a villain he probably doesn't even understand the concept of a humble life. In his eyes not using the speed to become, say, a professional sports player, or to cheat at competitions in other fields, is a waste.

One of the best examples of a mind swap. The voice remains the same as the body but it’s also tailored to how the character delivers their lines. So Lex still speaks the same way but with Wally’s voice. Most shows will comprise on one of or both of those points.

One thing I hated about the body swap trope was in Kim Possible. When Kim and Ron traded bodies, Kim kept all of her natural abilities. Like, they traded bodies, not nervous systems. How did she retain her muscle memory?

@@WarriorAuranae Now I ain't ever been in a GN bathroom because I live in Utah, but I assume there'd be urinals in a gender neutral bathroom. There are no urinals in this bathroom, which means it's probably one of the other explanations or Lex did indeed run into the women's bathroom.

Reminds of that scene Marshall Law where these superheroes are unmasking each other and betting on who each other's secret identity is, and when they forcibly unmask Marshall they're like "who tf is this dude?"

Lex assumes that Power and importance are connected. If someone had amazing powers like the flash then surely his real name is someone of great importance. In his mind there’s no way a random nobody could have the immense powers of the flash. It’s why when he made a program that identified superman as Clark kent he assumed it didn’t work correctly. There’s no way some farm body from a small town like smallville could ever have the powers of superman.

This is my favorite thing to do with superheroes. "Muahahaha we will finally unmask you and learn all your secrets!" *takes off mask* *Scene is followed by 4 hours of googling looking for any info on this guy* "Alright we found out you work at 7/11, and that's....all" "I told you I was nobody."
