Kieran go for the SBDX 001 or 017 for sure. they have marinemaster on the dial and no prospex "x". plus they both have black classic dials, you can't go wrong, they are timeless. the newer ones have quirky dials that seem faddish and will become dated over time. i personally sought out and bought the 017, not sure which version, but i love it!! good luck and keep us posted

@@jh-il5sb Cheers jh, I 100% agree with you, there is something about the newer models that I don't like, don't get me wrong they are amazing watches and have all the modern bells and whistles but I think they can be lost in the ever growing PX line up. I also think they are much less toolier looking that the Marinemaster dial references. I'm leaning towards an 001 or 017 (earlier release) I'll let you know

Mate, totally go for the JDM 017. Pretty easy to get from Japan, and NO PROSPEX X!!! The 001 is great too, but the 017 is the better movement and the DiaShield is pretty handy. I think there's quite a bit of variety in them - my 017 looks more like Bruce's 001..? They wear really well, super comfy, well adjustable. Just a really soulful watch and a true, legit diver. I've got Subs and 'Dwellers and all sorts, but it's the MM300 that does it for me. Good luck, MMs are the real deal and if it don't say 'Marinemaster' on the dial, it ain't! BTW, the service from Shopping in Japan is great to the UK, so prob IRL no worries.

As a very dedicated Seikopath myself two different Marine Masters are part of my collection. The first actually has neither MARINEMASTER nor the Prospex logo on the dial but rather the former across the caseback and the divisive Prospex logo on the crown (ref # SBDB011, MM600). As much as I absolutely love that watch I always felt I was missing out on something not having an MM300 also. I eventually decided on the SBDX043 ('Iriomote Island' version) and it was an instant hit the first time I fastened it around my wrist. 😊 There is just something about they wear that's inimitable.

@@jnrjnr77 if the opportunity presents itself again it's definitely a variant I recommend. The green of the dial is subtle in that in average lighting conditions it often appears nearly black but in direct sunlight it really, really comes alive. Thank you much for the kind words. 😊

@@vrah7 I'm dedicated enough to Seiko that my entire watch collection is nothing but their products. So, full disclosure, understand that my recommendation is in no way unbiased. That said? All of the MM300s are killer watches, regardless of which specific variant you find most appealing. The 8L35 internals are an undecorated variant of a Grand Seiko movement, the case finishing is nearly on par with its upmarket GS cousins, and being a legitimate saturation dive-capable watch it's an absolute tank. It's an unapologetically big watch but like many of Seiko's diver offerings it genuinely wears smaller than its dimensions may suggest. The published allowable daily accuracy variance will typically be far wider than real world, daily usage will return. Mine averages +4/+5 seconds a day. Does "regular" Seiko have the brand cache of an Omega, a Tudor, etc? Probably not. Is it every bit as good of a timepiece? In my humble opinion ~ absolutely yes!

The MM watch is beautiful in the showroom but just too thick and chunky (hockey puck !) for most people to use for daily wear. Reminds me of the Marathons in size. I have the SBDC 079 so called mini MM 200 m with black dial and iridescent blue bezel. It's dimensions are just about perfect for my average wrist. Mine remains in daily rotation, probably one of my favorite watches. I don't have an aversion to the Prospex logo but I do understand why some people do. Come to think.. I don't want the new Monsters because they have been Prospexed !

Hello. I remember when you unboxed your first Marine Master. And when you bought a second one😁! I follow you since a long time, Bruce. (First, pardon my English, I'm French, you know...😁😁😁) Whatever. I didn't have a MM300 at this time. I wanted one and the 017 was the current edition. I wanted a unused watch. I missed the last exemplary at the Seiko Store in Paris, France, sold in... The morning (so, I bought a Sumo...)! But. A friend of mine who owns a 001 found a last unused 017 in a clockmaker shop in East Europe and I took it. Yes. The markers are a little bit thinner. Indeed. You're right. But it isn't a problem for me. I loved it immediately. And I thought about you, who sold, once again, your MM... 🤪 Later, with my 017 on the wrist, I looked at the new editions, SLA02x and so on. And I wasn't enthusiastic. -First, there is no "MARINEMASTER" written on the dial. And for me, it's just another "Prospex" watch. "MARINEMASTER" to me, refers to the former organisation of the Seiko Brand. When you found, physically, a little workshop between the two Seiko factory lines. Between the common, the Prospex (and other lines), and the exceptional, Grand Seiko. At this border between two worlds. The 017 is the last reference of this former world. Only few guys in their little workshop, working on this line. In their little place. When you know the history of Seiko and its organization, it's like some... Pirate island! A "black box" where everything is possible and artisanal. -Secondly, there is a problem about the glass. I don't like it. The surface of the glass, on the 001 and 017 is, if you look closely, "very" slightly domed. Very slightly, but domed. It is just.... Beautiful. And just a little bit depressed under the level of the bezel. On the new editions, it outcrop it. I don't like it. And FLAT! Another discussion, is about the glass material. I prefer the Hardlex on this watch. Exceptionally clear and transparent with beautiful reflections. The Hardlex is a specific material designed for diving watches. You can scratch it. But not break it. It's the perfect glass for a tool watch. This is the SPIRIT of this watch. So. No sapphire on the MM300! -Thirdly, I don't like the partially "lumed" bezel. No Sir. Thank you. It's an aesthetic error. -And finally, the golden second hand. To me, a diving watch is a steel watch with a black dial and a black bezel. No colors. No "golden" pointers. But, I admit it's a very personal point of view.😉 So, my conclusion, according to my personal point of view. Find a 001. This is the right one. Eventually a 017. I think there are at least two edition of the 017: look at the bracelet. It was different in the first edition (look in the interior, there are some pics about it if you google it). So, certainly, two different dials, one, and first edition with the former 001 dial, and another edition with a new dial, with thinner marks. This is why you were surprised the second time. The new "SLA" are simply... NOT MARINEMASTER watches. And keep it, this time, Bruce... 😋 Always a pleasure to look at your channel, Bruce. Live long and prosper
