I also get the physical feeling of cats on the bed in the morning sometimes. I will swear to you there is an actual living cat walking around my ankles. It used to completely freak me out, then I learned about hypnagogic hallucinations. This is also why I think 99% of ghost stories are hypnagogic hallucinations.

PSA from Ph.D. in neuroscience here - auditory hallucinations at night/when falling asleep are more common than people think. It's normal, not a ghost, and nothing to be concerned about (many people interpret background noise like AC as hearing voices - our brains are predisposed to hear speech even when it is not there. e.g. hearing "batman" when horns sound in original batman theme song). If you have persistent sleep paralysis or night disturbances that bother you though or give you anxiety - talk to your doctor ♥

SPB from PhD in Sleep Paralysis - I could not let this thread pass me by without commenting. There are those (like me) who have experienced sleep paralysis for many years and firmly believe that it is not a hallucination. It fits within the category of an extraordinary spiritual experience, meaning it could be spiritual, metaphysical, dimensional or extraterrestrial. There are no answers to the question of what SP is. Having spoken to hundreds of people during my research, it does seem like SP experiencers have an underlying psychic acuteness, which means that they can have this experience.

They're literally just hypnogogic hallucinations... The grey area between being awake and asleep. For most people they're closed-eye visuals they see as they drift off to sleep, but for like 1/3 of people they're sometimes open-eye visual or auditory or sensory hallucinations -- and they get worse when your brain (specifically your brain and not your body) is very tired and it's more prone to filling in the gaps. Very simple hallucinations like this are actually super common. Confusing a coat for a serial killer in your room, or an unknown noise for someone calling your name, or a muscle twitch for someone grabbing your ankles -- and closed eye visuals are so common that it's the 'norm' and people without them are the weird ones. Almost everyone experiences hypnogogic hallucinations of some kind actually, but most people just write it off as part of drifting off to sleep. It's only anxious people / people who are bad at accepting grey areas and need to label / understand everything that seem to really give them importance. But nah - ask anyone who has seen a horror movie at 2am... The anxiety keeps you awake, wears your brain out b/c it's running at 110%, makes you fill in the gaps with negative thoughts instead of neutral ones, and then makes a lot of false positives as you get 'jumpy'. Nothing too complicated about it, really. People always want to talk about astral projection and ghosts or whatever - but nah. It's actually super simple. Nothing weird about it. Just need to learn to accept a bit of grey area in life (in this case, the grey area between awake and asleep) and stop trying to figure it all out. As long as they aren't complicated and persistent hallucinations that happen when you're awake and alert (full sentences or visuals that don't go away once you look at them a second time), you're basically 100% okay. Just stop obsessing about them and they'll go away. It's just like dreams... The more you keep a dream journal and *try* to remember your dreams, the more you remember them. Similarly, an anxious brain *tries* to remember the hypnogogic half-dream-state hallucinations because it labels them as a danger, so you remember them and then have more of them. Most normal people just write it off as part of falling asleep though.....

Whew. That is a bunch of words explaining something I do not obsess about or try to remember. It just happens. I am an anxious person, however, and have taken steps to help me deal with it and I live a "normal" life. I have always been cognizant of the fact there are "grey areas" in all facets of life...not just sleep. @@undergroundalienstudios56

Thank you for bringing your heart, mind, insight and talents to KZread. Two things: 1) The night voices and sense of touch, etc. could also be from a nervous system dysfunction that could come from a physical condition. I read the other comments and hypnagogic hallucinations seems to fit well (I’m not a doctor just someone with similar auditory and “tactile” issues) but I wanted to say this because though these phenomena can feel “crazy” and be “crazy” making, they may not be a mental health issue. I fully support people seeking mental health support when and as needed, but sometimes, especially with symptoms like these, the physiological causes and aspects can be overlooked. I hear music and feel touch, and sometimes a sense of wet, as if my foot were suddenly in water, and it turns out I have a neurological disorder and I cannot emphasize enough the blessing and benefit of simply understanding that aspect of my body. I’m trying to be brief, so forgive me if my details are sketchy, but my point is there may be additional avenues to consider. 2) I think you get this but just in case, knowledge is not intelligence and your intelligence is not in question. Knowing what you need to know and how you can find out if needed is much more valuable and requires much higher thinking levels than spouting random facts. Knowing the oceans may help you win a trivia contest at a bar; managing, analyzing and synthesizing information will help you build a life you want to live and give you the insight to share what you do on KZread.

I once lied about my height on my MySpace profile. I put 6’0” instead of 5’11” because, well, I guess that for guys, it’s the equivalent of 5’3” vs 5’4”. I feel like I can finally now admit that I did this 😂 Also, the night voices(On the edge of falling asleep for me) totally resonate, and I’ve used sleep cocoons as a defence measure many times - that chapter is very validating! 😂🙂 Great work Caroline! 🔥
