All the affordable gyms don't have the regular bench press stations and even at the more expensive gyms that do they're always taken up by broccoli heads, I can't afford to buy my own equipment nor do I have the living space to apply one, alternative exercises like dumbbell presses aren't nearly as good. So the Smith bench press it is for me.

Looking up my symptoms on the internet have given me some mixed results that just made me more confused than anything. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

It may be costchondritis - inflammation of the rib cage cartilage. I have similar symptoms to what you’re describing. Personally I also get sternum pain from lying down on my back. Breathing deeply also can cause pain. Just be careful since it’s pain in the chest and make sure to get your heart checked out.

This channel is dubious at best. Somehow, everyone is "pain free" after a single manipulation with some bands, also his stability is still visibly really poor as his shoulder still is shaky under load. I don't know, I just don't buy it. Too much literal clickbait contents for very specific issues that are always addressed with loosely the same method. Sometimes the content is simply filled with broscience, like this one. If you have poor shoulders and you're (really) pain free with the smith machine, then you should be doing it there is no "disaster" waiting to happen.

  • @absolutelysobeast

Garbage take honestly. These “fixes” he is implementing are muscle imbalances that need to be addressed. He is showing them how to address the imbalance and use proper technique. After doing these specific strengthening exercises and then doing the original lift WITH PROPER FORM the patient can visualize how it should feel. They are essentially doing a super specific warm up targeting their imbalance and then using proper technique to execute the lift which shows them their path forward. And by the way the reason it seems like people always have the same issues is because majority of people dont do exercises 100 percent properly. 95 percent proper form will get you hurt in the big compound lifts eventually. Also he is an olympic weight lifting coach? What exactly is your expertise?

@@absolutelysobeast Authority bias. A lot of coaches, especially the ones with big online communities, tend to bring a lot of famous people to be trained by them creating a sort of halo effect. Famous people go to see famous coaches so random folks are biased believing they're 100% legit, which is not always true. I mean Mike Israetel is currently making a living out of debunking famous coaches that are fraud. Do I believe Squat University is jack sh*t? No. But I simply despise their methods consisting mainly of objectifying the female body to make views, then inserting something loosely related to the clickbait to address an issue with roughly the same method every time with results that I found not only hard to believe but sometimes, often times, questionable. Yes, I do not own any degree in biomechanics, nor am I professionally lifting, yet I do think this channel is dubious, in its method of delivering information but also the mere quality of the information given. Some other folks are more relevant in my opinion.

Because the bar path is fixed on a smith machine. When you have a barbell you can adjust slightly and even and inch or two makes a huge difference. Just try to make sure that the bar is going over the middle of your foot for the entire range of motion top to bottom. Also what the guy above me said. Core engagement specifically “bracing” is key to all compound lifts. Squat University has a couple videos on bracing technique and application

I come to this conclusion. You use machine if 1. You don't know what you're doing in gym. 2. You're recovering/suffering from some injury or a like. 3. You're bodybuilder. Otherwise you shouldn't use machines at all.

Although, I do find it interesting that both the reigning Men's Physique Mr.Olympia and the reigning Men's Classic Mr.Olympia never flat barbell bench press and rarely if ever even flat dumbbell press. I think I even heard both of them claim they also never barbell back squat. The Men's Classic Mr.O, Chris Bumstead, definitely doesn't barbell back squat.

If you want to make sure all essential muscles are incorporated or activated when benching then practice strict form pushups.
