I Hate The Look of French Cleats! I Got This Instead...

My old miter saw station was unorganized, unfinished, and too big for my small shop. I am making a new miter saw station and organizing my tools. In this first video of the series, I will be removing the old miter saw station and installing this tool organization wall by Omniwall.

Over a grand for a few wall mount tool holders. That's more than I spent on my mac top/bottom chest combo. Takes up less space and holds more tools. So handy this is. Things like a specialized hook with a plastic tab and aerospace engineering to make a peg to hang a speed square. Know what else works just like that and doesn't 'fall out'? A nail. BOOM, complete solution and for around $4.50 you can get a pack with around 45 of those bad boys. Speed squares for days hanging on the wall at a cost of a dime each. And another $30 for this and $30 for that and $180 for another small piece. One thing's for sure, this system is indeed for 'tools'.

FYI for everyone still using peg board. They make plastic clamps that hold those hangers in and they work very well. Long as you have those plastic holders attached the hanger will not fall off.

I’m currently turning my garage into my wood shop. I’ve gotten too old to be doing remodeling work with a few exceptions. Two years ago I started collecting the tools and falling trees required to build furniture. I haven’t had to pay for any of my lumber as long as i did the cleanup. I have a mobile slab machine and use my basement to dry them. I’m going through all my tools and organizing now. I’m building my work table currently. I liked what you built for your table and used it along with a couple other guys I subscribed to. Keep killing it brother 👍.

Nice setup! On my walls I have LED light strips every 4 feet abover the workbench, and have them all wired into a circuit I control with a switch mounted on/in the wall board above the workbench. This way I can turn them all on or off with one switch, while working at the workbench. And since my entry door is 50 feet across the shop I wired all my shop lights(including those workbench lights, wired to the ceiling lights circuits), fan controls, air compressor, big screen TV and bluetooth stereo to a switch panel mounted next to that personal entry door. This way I can turn off everything on, or off, when I open up or leave without having to walk all over the shop to each individual item to shut it down after a long, exhausing night in the shop. Plus, I put a ring doorbell camera in my shop so my wife can check on me from anywhere and talk to me,when I'm not making a lot of noise of coarse, without having to walk out to the shop. She even does it from her phone, so, from anywhere. (My older brother died from a heart attack last Oct in his shop and his wife didn't find him for 2 hours..?)

I’ve six panels and a variety of attachments. Only two drawbacks - accessories pricing and some of the standard hooks are a little light weight. Don’t expect to put anything heavy on the medium or long hooks without them bending some. Also would be nice to have some “U” shaped hooks. I didn’t receive a tool for removing the plastic hooks, which are usually only good for one use. Still all said, a very nice system.

  • @scottbionicnerf8727

By the way I deal with two organization is I try to keep tools that are related to a certain work area or device like drill press gets drill bits router station gets the router bits, the table saw gets saw blades and related, a bench-top tool box(It's a great place to store clamps up 42" long.) is located on the 'I-reinforced-it!' (gave it a couple extra legs over the floor joists.) 'work-bench' that came with the shed. It also is the battery charger hub, bench top storage of the battery powered tool arsenal. Under that bench are also kept the corded tools; a circular saw, a drill, an impact screw driver, a sawzall, And a corded gigsaw. I have a roll-around toolbox that is mobile. The assembly table has a tool tray with a handle that can be slid around on the table, or removed completely. I'm outta room truthfully. I can't do the projects that the assembly table could easily handle because shop space is roughly 1/2 what would be required. I'm currently saving to purchase, or at least 80% of the cost of permit, purchase and set-up of a much larger shed. The office is in the house, cause saw dust and computers don't mix. Packaging material is also stored in the house, currently, the living room. (Wife's not over the moon about that.😬) I sure said a lot to say that the need for organized Wall storage could not be overstated. To help clean up some of the crap in the shop and have storage space and assembly space in a way overcrowded unit.

I'll be sticking with French cleats and pegboard. This looks good, but for $900 (even for $810 with the sale Amazon has on it atm), I think it's too expensive. It's definitely too much for me personally. It does solve a problem, but it creates a new one (a big hole in the old wallet LOL). French cleats are arguably stronger, and can be made from plywood for strength, or particle board or mdf for cost savings. I've used scraps to make parts and never once broken one. Omniwall looks very hard to expand without buying new parts. Pegboard is bad, but there is a place for it (as this shows). With the right setup and use case, it's a great product. But the hooks falling off is VERY annoying. They make clips to solve that problem, so I don't see that it really is THAT big of a problem. Certainly not enough that I'd want to spend $800+ on a system with many of the other issues of pegboard (space needed behind it, but that's solved too. Weight limitations. And limitations for where you can out something.) I definitely wouldn't turn it down if someone gave it to me, and I'd even consider $500 for a 4x8' area if I had a lot of things I wanted accessible on a wall. However, it seems like the company really just put lipstick on a pig after giving it a shower. It's still pegboard, just without the cost effectiveness, and adding constraints on the sizes of panels.

Suggestion on taking the labels off, get a long trough and put Very Hot Water with some detergent in the trough, it will weaken the glue. Once it is soft, use a plastic paint scraper the label will come off rather easily. Next take some butter and spread it on the place where the label was, the oil in the butter will weaken the glue even more, the just wash off with a rag, dry everything well and no label or glue on the support parts. It works on most glued labels.

They should include some hangers that you can screw onto a piece of wood so you can make custom hangers for the wall.

Awesome system, only thing I can think of might be some grommets to protect cables from rubbing on the holes on the side of the trays, other than that, jealous that it isn't sold in West Australia.

To get the 1/2" plywood sheet up, could you have screwed a cleat on the bottom of the bottom 2x4 as a lip to hold it while you screwed it in?

Hi Matt, I laughed when you mentioned the blackboard, a few times in grade school I had the job of taking the erasers outside to clean them, you probably remember the mimeograph machine too.

Good for you, young feller. May you have many happy years woodworking. Be a lot more serious than Matt about protecting your lungs from sawdust and other harmful things. Most people only get one set of lungs.

I think this system is really cool but definitely a later in my life buy. Ill stick to cleats for now because they are cheaper and I can customize it for any tool i want to hang with a little imagination.

Use a heat gun or a torch is quicker on stickers. Obviously if you use the torch just a quick blast to loosen the adhesive. Works great on wood stickers as well. Especially ply aka the worst ones!

I am normally right there with your suggestions and the things you endorse or are sponsoring, but this one I’m not a fan of at all. I love my French cleat walls and the versatility of being able to build any kind of holder out of scraps and have exactly what I want where I want it. The other thing is the cost as others have mentioned … I invested a whopping $75 plus screws into my French cleat wall and i have built my holders out of scrap both from my projects and free scraps from a local cabinet shop. I also really enjoy building my holders with my kids so this one is a miss for me my friend. I ain’t mad at ya tho! Lol. Gotta get them sponsors and it does seem like a decent product for those that don’t want to build their own and have money to burn. For me at least I give French cleats a 98% better option score. Love your channel and thank you for your service as an officer. 🤜🤛

Thank you. This one is costly. I looked at several options and this is the one I wanted out of everything available. I reached out to Omniwall and they agree to partner with me on this video. I preferred the overall look of this to a French cleat system. And I love all the accessories it has
