I Hate KTMs...So Why Did I Just Buy One? 2024 KTM 790 Adventure New Bike Day

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I have gone on record multiple times as a KTM skeptic...so why would I go out and spend 11 grand on a 2024 KTM 790 Adventure? 2 reasons, really.
1. It's time to put my money where my mouth is. I can't continue to disparage a brand if I've never actually owned one of their motorcycles. So it's time to find out first hand if the KTM reliability concerns are overblown or not. Is the fact that it's a Chinese KTM going to make things even worse? The only way to find out is to buy one for myself and ride it.
2. With the new 2024 KTM 790 Adventure coming in at just under 11,000 dollars US, it becomes a very intriguing entry into what I'd consider a more "affordable" mid-size adventure bike. The price drop will mean way more people will be considering the new KTM 790 adventure and I owe it to the audience to get experience on one if I can so I can make informed recommendations.
On paper, the 2024 KTM 790 adventure is probably the most capable and well-equipped mid-size adventure bike available for around 10,000 dollars. I want to find out if it's worth the money.

Yes - but some bikes are worth the extra work to maintain because of the performance and features they bring. I looked at all of the middle displacement ADV offerings available before I bought my 2022 Husqvarna Norden 901. Two years and 40,000 miles later, I'm still in love with my Norden! I would have bought a Teneré 700 if it had cruise control. I would have bought a TransAlp 750 if it had arrived sooner...and had cruise control. You can probably figure out by how many miles I've laid down why that feature is so important to me....

In my garage I have mostly dirtbikes, but also have a BMW 800GS and a KTM 790 for those longer rides to the adventure and beyond. The KTM does require a touch more maintenance, but I lend that to it being high performance from the showroom. A Toyota is less maintenance than a Porshce, but that is expected. Or consider a farm horse and a race horse. One takes a much higher level of care, but that again, is expected and understood before getting one.

That 'customer service' loading the bike in your pickup reminds me of an event in 2006--a customer just bought a new '06 KLR650, and brought a trailer to take it home. He firmly declined to have any help by the staff to load the bike. He came back inside a few minutes later letting us know he dropped the bike while loading it, and it had a nice little dent on the right side of the tank. He allowed us to help him finish loading the bike and was on his way with a dent in his new bike and his pride.

When I bought my YZ250fx at Power on a rainy day, I did NOT get that help lol. Their wooden ramp was so slippery the bike and I slid backwards and somehow I didn’t drop it. Took a few tries. But it’s all good, I tumbled that bike down many a rocky singletrack. 😅 However, the deal I got was fantastic, so no biggie.

I wish you luck! I loved my 790 adventure R but after 3 years of constant problems I had to move to something more reliable. Issues I had that you may need to watch out for. Warped front brake rotors, leaking front master cylinder, leaking front rim strip (x), rear brake mount broke, cruise control stopped working, quick shifter issues, cold star issues, thermostat leak, crank position sensor failure, 3-4 times to start from cold, battery failed after 1 year (bike was ridden weekly and on tender). It's a laundry list of issues and I doubt most people have that many issues with their KTM. I really hope the bike is reliable and you fall in love with it!

I'm a Norden owner. From as soon as they arrived on the west coast (USA). I know many Norden owners, and only one has sold theirs - and that's because they realized they needed a much smaller bike than any of the middle displacement ADV's. I've ridden my Norden 40,000 miles in two years. I've ridden the hell out of the bike, on BDR's and other off pavement adventures, and bashed the hell out of the bike and myself. I have no plans to sell it and move on to something else.

I bough a 2023 890 adventure base model a year ago. I have had a couple issues. My fuel pump wire was melted by the exhaust. As most people, I had coolent leaking at the hose fittings. Tightened them back up and no more issues there. And I had the seal behind the front sprocket leaking a little oil. All items were taken care of by warrenty. Nearly 10000kms on it and its been amazing. Starts each time. And so fun to ride. Hope yours has few to zero issues and you enjoy it. Cfmoto has been producing a lot of bikes lately and I haven't been hearing a lot about issues with them so hopefully that's the case with yours.

My friend bought a 2020 KTM 790 and I bought a leftover 2019 Africa Twin back in early 2020. I would have liked to buy a 790 but I was a little leery of the reputation KTM had and I could not pass up on the price on the AT. If I remember correctly, it was $10,999. Anyway, my friend had no major issues with reliability with it and thought about moving up to the 890. I told him that his 790 was running like a top for 4 years. Why tempt fate. He kept the 790 and is happy with it . . . so far . . .

Looks fun, and I am one of your Norden series watchers because I own one. I have owned a lot of motorcycles over the past 35 years; Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Aprilia, KTM/Husqvarna. They have all been great, fun machines and all have been reliable. The only one that needed major engine work was an early Honda CRF250x. In my experience the KTM's have been as reliable and durable as the other bikes, but they do have some silly issues sometimes (the kickstand bolts used to shear and the bike would fall over; easily fixed obviously) and they recommend expensive oil. They cost a little more to buy and maintain but for me they are worth it. I am better than most about maintenance and that certainly contributes to my positive experience.

I had to try one too. I had a brand new 2011, 450 XCF. I dual sported & single track woods & mountain. I was not at all happy with its street manners. I absolutely looked to stay on gravel. At no time ever, riding off road did I ever require that immense degree of horse power. & the carb was constantly an issue & could never get it dialed in. Valves needed adjustment WAY before any Japanese bike I have ever had. Stuff was always rattling loose. It was a bike for a pro rider & I simply am not a pro. However, I will anticipate your experience will be much better. I have looked longingly & been tempted by the 790 many many times. I truly hope you fall in love with it.

She says it is the best for her of all the middleweights. I'm short so it's the best middleweight for me other than a 650 V Strom. At $10,999 it's a good buy. My only real complaint is motor noise. All the middleweights are different and good, but not perfect. You just have to pick the one that checks the most boxes. Thanks for testing this one. You do a great job Ben.

Hi Ben...John here...from Milwaukie... I just had to chime in on this one...your approach to the 790 is hilarious...and welcome!... I ride a '22 Africa Twin ES - and, like you - I was an am after reliability... I have purchased several bikes from Power Motorsports - they are good to work with and good prices (pre-pandemic, at least.) I rode a '22 890S from there on the gravel road you took on the 790... and, like you I was impressed with the power and "hooliganism" of the bike...(easy to steer with rear wheel...;-) - although the fit and finish and overall quality was lacking... I am really looking forward to your long-term experience...as Ian of BigRock Moto has said, the Chinese bikes might even be better than the Austrian builds... Enjoy and keep us posted...

I think the Hondas have given me the most grief over the years as far as failures, repairs, recalls, rebuilds, etc. The KTMs have been reliable and a hoot to ride and own and are REALLY a pleasure to work on. Bike Bigotry is for losers. Get out there and try every brand with an open mind, people! Why would you eat the same thing for dinner for your entire life??? Sheesh!

Well, I just picked up a KTM 790 Adventure 2024 on Saturday 13 April, 2024 thanks to your videos. Coming from a top heavy 2021 Africa Twin Adv Sport ES DCT that I have crashed several times. Picking up the AT is a pain in the A$$. 100 lbs heaver than the KTM. It's Sunday evening 14 April and I have already put 300 miles on it. 80% was on gravel and dirt roads. It is night / day difference compared to riding the AT. The bike tracked well, and not once did I feel like I was going to crash like I do every time I take the Africa Twin out on a Gravel / Dirt road. I have ridden thru stuff on the KTM where I know I would have dumped the AT... Hope this bike holds up cuz I see a lot of adventures in the coming months. My KTM is black just like yours. Excited to watch some upcoming trip/camping reports that you take on the KTM. I'm enjoying the content on your channel. Have to mention that I am riding out west of Delta, Utah with scenery like day 1 on your Oregon BDR adventure. Desert/ mountains / passes. Was riding on the old highway 6 heading out to Marjum pass, Cowboy pass, Eskdale, ut and out to the Border Inn on the Nevada border. Lots of stuff to look at out west.

I'm glad you stepped out of the box and decided to review something out of your comfort zone. To be honest, I didn't know this bike existed. I've recently sold my last bike and bike less. 😢 I've been looking at ADV bikes because they intrigue me. I feel it connects me back to my youth when I had dirtbikes. I've owned a number of road bikes since then, and Kawi KLR650. I'm finding there's a lot of different ADV bikes to choose from. I'm wondering, and hopefully, if you don't have enough knowledge, someone else might... what are the mid level ADVs that have the best power to weight ratio? I've looked at mostly used bikes, so if some of the oldies seem relevant, still list them, please. And now for some hype. The reason I watch you is because you are relevant to my riding skills. Not the expert but still like to have fun. Look forward to the KTM breaking.

hey fella , good video , i been riding KTM for many years now and i stick with them because of a few reasons , one for the engineering of the bikes , 2 dealership , 3 reliability, $ service and back up , 5 resale price, and you do get a lot of good quality parts on the bike from new .so its Nice to see you go for a KTM , i do hope you enjoy the bike . KTM bikes owned , 2011 KTM 250EXC, had for 12 years, 2009 KTM 450exc 2years, 2014 KTM 500EXC 3years , 2023 KTM 390 adventure , 18 months , and now the 2023 KTM 690 enduro R . all never broken down .so yea good move give it a go . enjoy , cheers steve/australia

Looking forward to this review! I was torn between the 790 and the Tuareg 660. If my local KTM dealer had managed to get a 790 into his showroom in Jan., when I was seriously looking, I might have gotten a 790. Ended up getting a good deal on a new 2023 Tuareg, have a dealer 20 miles away, and I’m really happy with it. It strikes me that KTM is targeting the 790 more towards longer distance ADV riding, and the 890R more towards 50:50 riding, with the Tuareg perhaps fitting in between these two bikes.

Man, based on what I’ve seen out or of your riding style you should have a blast. Most likely needing heavier springs up front. For me the suspension was too soft. I’m still on my 990. But went to the dealership to try a couple of new spaceships. Anyway, have a great time and really enjoy your reviews and BDRs.

Yay! I just put a deposit on a 2024 KTM 790 Advenure. I'm still a little nervous because I've always had dependable, Japanese brand bikes. I'm happy that this model will have a 2 year warranty because it is not an "R" model. I will be selling my Versys 1000, which weighs about 110 POUNDS MORE than this bike! I can't wait to see how awesome it is to flick around. I will be following any mods or additions you make to yours! Thank you. 😊

Pretty excited for this one as I was impressed with the first one we took out of the crate. I truly hope you do an actual long term review. Most long term reviews I see don't make it to the second service interval and most bikes can survive that long. Please abuse it and keep us up to date on any hiccups you come across, no matter how small. I'm in the same KTM camp as yourself so I'm eager to be surprised whether good or bad.

The most reliable longest lasting absolutely bullet proof motorcycle I ever had was a 1989 KTM 500 DXC. The same motorcycle is still ridden by the buddy I sold it to. Fast as could be with a wide ratio gearbox it went 100 miles an hour if you had the testicular fortitude. Never once broke. Still hasn’t as far as I know. I also owed a 1994 KTM LC4 450. In a Desert competition it seized tighter that Nick’s hat band in the middle of nowhere Nevada. It had an aluminum “can” oil cooler braided line arrangement. In the “can” the original paper filter had a rubber inner sleeve. The sleeve overheated, melted and clogged and then all moving parts stood still. Thus began a love hate relationship ultimately ending shortly thereafter with a motorcycle that I despised. I dunno how I feel about KTM moving manufacturing to the East. Hopefully they maintain reliability AND an attractive price point. I bet most of us watching your very well spoken channel would enjoy seeing you report nothing but good about your new KATOOM.

Hey, a question about how you tied the bike onto the back of your truck? I can see you are attaching the tiedowns to the bottom triple brackets. On mine the right hand side has the brake line running real close to the fork leg, too close to fit a tiedown in between. Did the dealer move the brake line for you? Thanks for your reply

The biggest issue to watch for on the 790 is the camlobe wear.. Check it before the warranty runs out. It would be nice if KTM would honour the same warranty they offer in the EU in North America, that would be a game changer for many!

5’6 average dirt rider, 15+ year street rider. I had a 2021 890 Adventure R. I’ll ride any height bike and I did do some heavy off road riding….but it was a lot of bike. The power delivery was great off road, it wasn’t really too much there, but it was a fat girl. If I could do that phase of my motorcycling all over again, the 890 standard or now 790 that you have would be my better option pick even with the breakover angle issues that could come with it. I may get the adventure bug again. I’m excited to follow this to see if it sells me, but I’m leaning towards something highway capable but a little closer to a dirt bike. Like the T7. I did take one of my greatest adventures on the 890 so even though I’m no KTM fanboy, it will have a place in my heart. (Currently a MT-09 and KLX300R rider)

Just picked up my first dual purpose motorcycle, a BMW g 310 GS. Not too proud to start small. Getting older, with shoulder and knee problems and because I live off grid, the bike is permanently parked and has to be wheeled around in deep sand so small and light is good. The immediate issues are the non switchable ABS and the deplorable highway capability re: Australian touring distances which is not what I bought the bike for so that's not a big deal. Looking forward to immersing myself in the culture and picking up tips from your channel.

I'm really glad that you got that bike! I'm looking forward to all the videos you're going to make with it! I owned a 2021 890 adv R (it WAS too much bike for me, I'm just an average rider. I really didn't need all it offered) I had the cold start problem and moisture in the TFT and a few electrical hiccups. I got rid of the bike last year (2023) And just last month I picked up a 2024 T7. Which I already like better! So I did the opposite path as you. But I'm gonna be interested to see what you think of the 790, I would have considered buying it (790) as well but once I found out it was manufactured in China it became a hard "no".

I am glad you got it. It should make good content. My KTM I recently sold had some bugs but nothing serious. Maintenance was a pain. The oil change was I’ll just say not what I expected. I got shorted on the parts for the oil change kit. So that I had to wait on. The valve job was kinda a pain just getting to them. And my gas gauge was a bit unpredictable to say the least. But like I said nothing major just more of annoying things with my KTM.
