I Had to Fish Dead Bait in This Wild Forgotten Pond

Ойын-сауық

I just had to fish dead baits in this wild forgotten pond. This session I decided to hit the first ever "forgotten pond" I'd explored a couple years ago. Only this time using dead baits. The aim was to hit a number of different swims drifting a variety of sea baits a few feet beneath the surface in the hopes of pulling out a few forgotten pond pike. There's no better feeling than seeing that float start to bob and slide beneath the surface! Enjoy!

Great I love fishing in these places. I've found from experience that in small ponds like this, you end up with one or two very large pike, then they are either starve or die of old age, then the pond will sit empty for a while, then the whole cycle starts all over again, usually a seven-year cycle.

You know most people here in the US calls northern pike slime rockets and they don’t like catching them unless they’re trophy size 10+ lbs. Me on the other hand, always loved catching pike and always took one back to camp to eat, no trophies, but big enough to eat. Again, here people don’t like eating them, too many pin bones, but I was taught how to eat fish carefully. I love your vids and I love the UK style of fishing for them. May your line always be tight and your poles bent.

I always put mine back but had an instance back in the 1980's where I was fishing a local stream and the Pike rarely go above 5lb - I caught an absolute donkey at 11lb but because I was using a small bait it had wolfed it down before my normal 10 count to strike. I damaged the fish removing the hooks so decided it was more humane to put it out of it's misery, whacked it a couple of times with my bankstick and put it in a bag behind my tackle box. When I got home, I presented it to my Dad (I was a teenager then) and said 'here is dinner for tonight'. Being somebody who grew up in the 30's, my father knew how to gut a fish so started to wash it down in the kitchen sink (We had one of those old square deep porcelain ones). 'It's still alive, it's eye just moved' he said to me. 'No chance' I laughed. As he continued to wash it, the water revived it some more and the Pike lunged - I had never seen my father move so fast, he was back across the kitchen so fast Usain Bolt wouldn't have caught him! Quickly despatched for the second time, we ate well that night - As you say, Pike are very boney but if you take care the taste more than makes up for it

Where I live that is usually not a big problem and it's pretty common to dump pine trees in the water to help predatory fish like perch. I read an article that suggested that the massive storm we had here in Sweden in 2005 that caused massive amount of trees to fall down in to lakes and rivers may have significantly increased fish production for a few years after that

Let me say I love the video. You walking through the brush and finding tiny spots of water is very impressive. That said mate, you have to set the hook. You are also using an enormous bait. Try just using half that fish or even the head. It's much easier to set a hook when you have a smaller bait. Pike don't care if the meat looks like a fish or not. As long as it smells like something they like, they will eat it. Can't tell you how many pike I've caught on a fish head. You are also using something that looks like a carp pole. Downsize to something you can manage and has some flex. Please don't let these criticisms get you down. You have the love and drive for the sport. You keep it up and I'll keep watching.

Yes there are plenty of such places in my country, although perch only is more common. A biologist here wrote of a small lake with only pike that had very low levels of oxygen so only the upper level of the water column had enough oxygen for fish to survive. The result was loads of tiny pike no longer than perhaps 10 to 20cm but they still managed to survive. If I remember correctly they lived of insects and fish fry like small trout

Enjoy the videos but please, please lose the "music". It really detracts from the content in my view. Just have the background noise, that way the audience are really there with you. Just my view, hope the feedback is welcome.

Chris, you are a legend of an angler, but for god's sake put some wellies on, you know you're going to get cold wet feet in trainers. Please don't start looking like Alan Blair in designer pumps...... heaven forbid. Keep up the mega vids.
