Using a PIKE to Catch a Bigger PIKE!

Спорт

Well i like to do thinks a bit differently and in this video its the bait that's a bit odd. I decided to use a dead pike that i found as bait! Its a pike eat pike world out there. I use this big dead bait in the local river / creek where i use these dead baits to catch river crocks! I also use roach and sardines focusing on the slack waters and deep holes

Nice catch mate👍🍻 I like your choice of bait. Big bait= big fish. I canoed and fished a Municipal drainage ditch emptying from a large wetland prairie marsh in central Manitoba Canada during mid summer. We saw a large number of big pike but only caught many small 12-24" pike (we call them hammer handles) that strangely, upon hitting would all immediately head straight to the banks. I found out why further up at the control gate where you could see 36"-45"+ fish by the dozens streaming through the shallows, constantly. I found out that small pike were the main food supply for the lunkers and would hide out in the bank reeds to avoid their elders. Number 1 bait for catching the lunkers turned out to be 12-18" pike. They wouldn't even touch large pike lures and bucktails. A local gent I met laughed at my amazement & said this is nothing, he claimed during spring spawn you could walk across the ditch😅. I fear he wasn't exaggerating, I kid you not, it was worthy of a mini-documentary on nature, let alone fishing. The variety and sheer number of birds ducks geese & hawks alone was worth the trip. I went back a couple years later and it was typical prairie dry weather cycle, completely bone dry. Apparently this little known and even less fished marsh is a major but erratic pike breeding area for the Assiniboine River. It's many square miles of marshy maze & very easy to get lost in as channels change drastically with fluctuating water levels & plant growth. Now that GPS is more accurate and reliable, I hope to go back and canoe the marsh before I'm no longer able, & remember to bring a camera along...

Another great upload Chris, thanks. I've been using small pike as deadbaits since around 1986, when we saved euthanased pike from a trout river in N Ireland. They catch some mighty fine fish! Your last fish certainly looked heavier than 11lbs!!!!

I don't understand the thumbs down, I'm guessing it's because you used a PIke, not sure if they still do, but bait companies use to farm small jack pike as specialist baits back in the late 90's, I remember a company up north selling them frozen packed in 2's....if you find a dead jack, no point in wasting it, use it, circle of life and all that, its one of the best baits there is for catch large pike... I have, like Chris used every bait you can think of, from rats, dead pigeons, I even caught pike on raw sausages years ago! nice one Chris!!!

I remember catching a 4lb pike and as i got it near the bank a huge pike that looked about 30lb plus grabbed it and made a huge swirl and took it right out, i couldn't stop it, was like a train, spent about 3/4 of an hour playing it, then it dived with the pike so deep and snapped my line, was amazed. I just caught a 27lb one that morning, that felt like a 40lb do'er. I then caught another jack about 3 and half and used as bait, had to throw it out as couldn't cast with that weight. Big pike are ruthless haha.

The most important parts of fishing are to respect the fish and their treatment as much as possible in fishing context and respect the waterways, clean up after yourself and remove any waste/rubbish you find from previous idiots! I always check over fish I catch, remove any parasites and treat any wounds and ALWAYS take home any rubbish/ discarded tackle I find. If all of us fishermen do this we’ll have healthy fish stock and healthy waters ! Like your videos 👍

Nice and interesting! I live in France, and it's forbidden to use small pikes as baits. We have legal minimum sizes to keep them (from 50cm to 70cm in general, depending of the place). Some small rivers with wild trouts don't have those minimal legal sizes, as pikes as considered detrimental/invasive species in those small streams. BUT in this case, it's forbidden to use them as baits. Best regards from FrogsLand ;).

I also would never use a course deadbait either, I never kill any fish. I'd buy sea fish from the local Mozzers to try deadbaiting. Anyway, these vids are great and certainly fill me with the hope that I might be able to break my pike duck :)

Don't think you need big baits for big pike. I caught my PB 3 months ago (Although small compared to many other's PBS, 16.5lb measuring 78cm from top to bottom. Caught on the smallest spinner I own on the lightest rod (5-10g) I own, Was literally packing up after a day with only 1 pike strike breach on a top water mouse previously and no other fish. Just wanted a couple of small perch so I could go home happy. Thought I got caught in weed as the fish didn't fight at all and felt just like a dead weight. Also you mentioned not dead baiting because you don't want to kill the fish, that's fair enough. Sometimes things happen though. I've had dead fish float down the river which i've managed to net and use, i've also had a greedy perch that insisted on swallowing hooks so deep it's irretrievable. In these cases, You may feel it better to use the fish to your advantage rather than simply throwing it back

Nice video! Here in Holland people would complain if you would use pike as bait.
