I remember spending $600 (over $900 in 2019 bucks) on a really crappy Ibanez RG in 1997 (my first "real" guitar) and I hated playing it. Now, $600 can get you a really nice mid-tier import (like an LTD or Schecter) that might even have some brand-name parts (like Grover tuners, actual Floyd Rose, maybe even Duncans or DiMarzios).

Oh yes indeed we have huh? I guess we can all thank Gibson and Fender for this. Back in the late 70's or early 80's when those two big boys decided to try and compete with the influx of those Asian guitars what did they do? remember last night's video from Austin on that Orville? They went to China and set up factories there and then when they left China they ended up leaving most if not all the equipment and now a fully trained crew(s) and tah dah now China and other Asian countries can produce some real quality instruments at a fraction of the cost. Kind of seems the two big boys cut off their noses to spite their faces huh? lol. I always get a little annoyed and a little kick out of people who complain about instruments like these but let's be honest, everything Austin said was "wrong" with this bass and ones in his other video's about Glarry, do they not have similar of not the same issues with brand new Gibson and Fenders? I ordered a new Telecaster last year and when I opened it up the bridge humbucker was not even screwed down! Thankfully the screws and springs were in that pickup cavity! Kids and average beginners really have quite a few options in today's guitar market to get their first instrument at a low cost and yet have it still be a decent instrument to learn on.

@@alabamahebrew They didn't go to China and they didn't leave "most of their equipment" there. They were trying to slow down and ultimately stop the sales of unauthorized japanese copies of their instruments. Also stuff like the pickup not being screwed down happens, quality control is never perfect. Just look at all the duds Fender and Gibson had made in the 60s and 70s.

I just bought one for my Grandson in Law seeing how my Granddaughter is learning guitar and I though it would be.....seriously, the model, natural burley with the maple neck and OMG it is GORGEOUS! Expecting garbage strings ( think-if ever there would be a cost cutting move-good ones they make no claims about, right?) so I got a set o GHS's, the brand I use on all my other noise machines but lo and behold, they seem to be half decent strings on the guitar! Now, no blemishes, nitro finish and frets properly filed. the gig bag and strap and cord....tossed in the drawer of nice but no's..did I mention the machine just looks good? A great buy and if it got lost in flight...meh.

One way to correct the neck dive is to use tape weights like they use on tires. You can hide them in the control cavity and tape over them to protect the wiring. It doesn't require much weight but the results are well worth it!

Just because of all the rap about Glary I ordered two P style Basses. One for me, the other one for a friend that wanted to play bass again, after a hiatus of 25 years. He didn't want to spend lots of money, so the Glary just came right. An what can I say... For € 85,-- its a bass I would recommend to anybody who needs a cheap P style bass. Its really light, the frettwork is ok, say, better than on a cheap Squire P Bass. A bit long frett ends, but playable. The bass has not much output, the tone is typical P Bass. You have to give the amp more gain on the amp to get a punchy tone. The setup was decent right out of the box, the finish was astonishing well done. I am impressed what is possible today for this small budget.

I got the same bass last year, ya know what I'm doing with it? I removed the neck, hardware and electronics and I am fitting that all on to an Epiphone SG Special body (6 stringer) Lol. I didn't like how my arm had to be with it being a P bass style, had I known this I would have ordered the Jazz bass style. I did upgrade the pups but nothing super fancy, they have a touch more punch than the stock ones but that's about it. Surprisingly from what I was able to find out online, the SG bass body IS the same size as the SG regular guitar body and everything pretty much lines up exactly as it does on the Glarry body only now my arm won't have to be back as far. I haven't decided on what color to paint it when I am done. I cut some wood blocks into the shape of the original pickup cavities and glued those in then I routed out for the bass pups. I plan on making a custom pick guard for it when I get to that point with some guard material I have, lol my routing work was not as good as I hoped otherwise I had thought of going without a pick guard on it. Should be an interesting instrument when I am all done with it.

@@IrisGalaxis Well, cause at the time I just wanted a regular bass and I liked the looks of the Glarry and the price, I don't actually "play" bass I just wanted something to learn on. The way it was set up, being a P bass, annoyed me and then Austin showed us that Gibson Sg bass and I had that old Epiphone body just lying around sooooooo.... lol

@@IrisGalaxis Yeah that's what I was meaning is I don't have to comprise on scale length it all works out perfectly as if this was made right from Epiphone's plant. I was a bit surprised that it works so neatly but hey I am not going to complain lol. I may upload something but my internet here in my home is so darn slow a 1 minute video literally takes like 15 minute to upload lol. I am also turning a Firebird X into what I am calling a Telebird lol. If you search through Austin's videos from last year there is one where he is holding a blue Firebird X and the video title is something like" why does everyone hate this guitar" or " does it deserve the hate" something about hate lol, anyway, I purchased that guitar from Austin, and about 4 others lol. Strictly with the intention of tearing it apart and customizing it. I had toyed with the idea of doing things like string through and fancy paint jobs, but then I was looking through my parts drawer and found a Tele bridge and got the idea to do this. Unfortunately I am not the only one with this idea, I have seen tow or three since I got the idea but oh well I am will still do it at one time. I like to just play with guitars and see what I can do to really change them and/or improve them. I also purchased a 2016 Gibson Les Paul from Austin that someone had tried to do a refinish on and failed lol. I took that guitar and got after it with my grinder and I cut a comfort belly cut into the back, yeah I forgot about the weight relief stuff and ended up making a big hole in the back that took me two weeks to properly fill and then hide while still keeping the belly cut in place lol. That one turned out pretty good but something went wrong with nitro finish because within a week of my completing that project the nitro began to get straight line cracks. Now three months alter and this thing looks like it's about 50 years old with all the finish cracking. I don't know if I just got as bad batch of nitro or if the paint I used underneath caused this, I used three different shades of silver along with some black and created this marble effect that I really like. I did spray two quick coats of the nitro on the face of the head stock and that is all checked up so I am thinking it's the nitro and not the paint since I did not paint that area at all. I took an old Strat style cheapo guitar and went after it with my router and purely by accident I ended up cutting this huge sitting bird image into it and then I painted it with some blue, purple and pink metallic type paint, once that dried I filled the entire cavity up with Epoxy and that looks cool so far but I haven't got back to that project yet lol. Austin also sold me a 1987 Gibson SG Special that was white from the factory but someone decided to hit the face of it with black and silver spray paint and really messed it up. I had a guy who wanted to buy it if I finished it with Heritage cherry, so I did that and it turned out really nice. But he never responded to my messages when it came time to sell it to him. So I just finished it up after I returned it back to the original white finish. I left the neck bare, it has a maple neck, and slapped a stinger on it and then finished it with some Tru-oil, man that really makes the neck feel slim!! lol. That one came with Schecter pups in it and I am going to change those out. Now while it may seem that I just like messing around with guitars like this, I will not do any such thing to a good guitar, like a Les Paul that has nothing wrong with it, all of the ones I do have issues that cause the refinishing to be necessary. The purists get upset when you tell them you went after a Les Paul with a grinder LOLOL. I am actually considering refinishing that guitar again since the nitro screwed it up and this time going to all white, I have this desire for an all white Gibson collection lol.

I bought a glarry Jazz 2 years ago. It arrived as jig saw puzzle. Strap button fell out, strings scratched the neck, the ground was not soldereed to the electronics, the pick up screws and the way they were mounted F'ked! But it was not my first rodeo, I am old timer and ordered it just to see... So I repaired to what should have been factory. The only new parts I put on it was wood screws for the pick ups, and wire to rewire the electronics. Now with that said.... Once in spec and functioning the tone was not bad. Then I set the neck up and though the neck is as thick as a telephone pole, it slaps awesome.

You can put wheel balance weights in the control cavity to balance out the head dive. a lot of SG owners do that

I sanded down the points of my GIB headstock to look like a Ibanez, then I sanded down the face of the body/headstock and refinished it using black stain and silver Rub and Buff to highlight the grain. Steel wooled the back/sides of everything to give it a smooth satin finish like the back of the neck. Love the two-tone look, and I don't have to stare at that Glarry logo anymore. I carved my first custom nut out of a Graph Tech Tusq XL 1/4" blank, using the plastic nut as a template. It was harder than I was expecting, but turned out pretty well for my first time. Certainly an upgrade from the factory one. I replaced the output jack with a Switchcraft and rewired everything with higher quality cloth-covered wire, after coating the pickup and pot cavities with conductive paint (and grounding to it). Noticeably cut down the hum. The thing sounds pretty awesome for a passive system, and I'm enjoying the hell out of modding, without worrying about destroying an expensive guitar, as I learn.

Wow thanks for finally doing Glarry Bass Review! I am a guitar player and I would love to have an electric bass for my original recordings ( Instead using software to make my guitar sound like a bass) and for the cost of around $100, the quality is amazing! Yes, this will definitely be a Christmas present to myself, but I will also go with the 5 string.

The scarf joint is a great feature. The wood looks awesome. I have an old Washburn maple board neck I turned fretless. The width is very close, so I'm gonna get a for Glarry X-mass. Thanx Trogly.

I've been buying Harley Benton as a discount brand. (I'm obviously not so accomplished as a guitarist.) Then HB used the COVID-Supply Chain issues to jack shipping up from $30 to about $85. So much for economy. I ordered a 4 String GJazz Electric Bass (Transparent Yellow) for $80. I like the Fenderish head-stock on it. I'll get a good look this weekend. If it works out I'll have a good Bass for my studio that I can add tracks with. The proof is in the pudding.....

Have you seen the epiphone Stratocaster my local second hand guitar shop has had 2 of them or the Gibson bluesmaster they also have one of them

I like it!!. Probably change the pots and strings and wiring... And whatever breaks or bends later... Looks good 12th fret strap pin location always balances.. Wiring either ground wrapped or cavity grounded.

Got one of these this week, wiring is like a classic LP sans switch (which is why both tones work the way they do), if you wire it like a Yamaha RBX375 (schematics online) the controls will work independently.

After a minor set up, this is the bass I gig with and leave the Precision at home.

I have two Ibanez basses that I love and I can definitely see where they got some of their ideas for this bass, the necks on Ibanez's are usually alot thinner than anything Fender or Gibson makes and Glarry mimiced that, as far as the headstock, it is simular however the top of Ibanez bass head stocks dont have the scoop that the Glarry basses have, it is a convex sort of shape. Glarry is probably fine legally with their headstock shape because there are definitely more famous brands that have the same 2+2 style headstock, not to mention Ibanez would be a little hypocritical to sue another company for stealing their idea lol. Might pick up one of these basses at some point as a good cheap fret-less project bass

Looks good and sounds good. Should do well for a player in a financial pinch. I could see anyone playing this out and not getting laughed at. I have an early 1990s Yamaha bass that has somewhat the same style body. Not bad. Thanks for the review.

Trogley,the 5string jazz basses I swear are the nicest basses Glarry makes,I got one in sunburst,I've missed it a bit,put a hi mass nickel bridge,zinc locking saddles,I stretched the scale from 34 to 36 inches added Wilkinson pickups,and some Eball extra slinky strings,it's a killer bass,the build quality is way better than anything else I've seen from Glarry

You made nice reviews. I like many things about this bass. I recommend Glarry make an Ibanez Mikro small scale bass. Since Glarry is now selling strings, consider making Mikro scale strings in flat wound. Not everybody likes round wound strings. A flat wound string with a black plastic wrap would be great. Have a metal core. Then, very comfortable on the fingers. I like what Glarry is doing and wish them all the best.

I ordered a uke hardshell case from Glarry and it's great quality.

Looks nice, sounds alright. Honestly for 90 dollars, probably be a good bass to buy and mod a bit if you want a unique project bass. Replace the tuners, pickups, the nut, and maybe the bridge, and you've got a good bass on your hands. Put some EMG gzr pickups in there or maybe some quarter pounders just for the hell of it.

I'm a lefthanded player so brands like Glarry, SX, and Harley Benton really appeal to me. They tend to have more lefthanded models available. You can get a decently built instrument with crap to crap plus electronics for a decent price. Thank you for the review!

My boy started playing around with my guitars the past few months and has expressed that he wants to play a bass. He’s kind of wishy-washy with how much he commits to things so I’ve been on the fence about dropping $200 on a cheap Ibanez. For $100 I figured this thing would be absolute garbage but after watching your vid I feel like this is precisely what I need. Looks beautiful, seems to play fine, and I won’t be completely irritated if he ends up not really using it because it’s ridiculously inexpensive. Order is placed and I look forward to seeing how he likes it. Thanks for the unbiased opinion!

Can you show us what you use when you clean up the guitars?

I think the reason it's not super neck heavy it due to the extended upper horn. If it was a p bass, it would probably have more neck dive. I think if I get into bass again, I'm getting one of these. It would make a great modding platform, too!

I bought a Glarry G40 , the Ibanez copy. It was practically playable out of the box. The springs needed to be loosened a little... Not as good as my Ibanez RG series, but it's a decent guitar 🎸

If Glarry can sell this much instrument for $89.99 retail, imagine what an extra $10 - $15 can bring. Fix all of Trogly's suggestions (better output jack, grounding, fret work) AND add one notch better pick-ups and controls - what a bass guitar that would be!

Lol, as a left handed bass player, going to the guitar shops are the most depressing times ever. Lol. Sooooo many nice right handed basses of all shapes and sizes, and there is always just one left handed, sunburst, squire jazz bass. Lol. Every shop has that bass! Pretty sure no one ever buys it. I’ve been using a crappy Ibanez gio for years, but I recently ordered a schecter stiletto custom-5, in left. And they didn’t even have one in the manufactures warehouse, (lol story of my life),so it was made to order... so I’m waiting. Lol. But I can’t wait!

I don’t know if you will answer my question during this video the Gib Bass is under $100 dollars now it’s up to $119 dollars.. from your opinion is it worth the price a real Ibanez is only $179 .. what is your opinion?

A good quality set of strings will improve the sound dramatically - the ones they come with are the cheapest money can buy and sound accordingly. Since bass strings for a player who is playing casually can last 2 years or more easily they are worth every penny.

I ordered one of the Glarry P basses. The truss rod didn't work. They went round and round with me about it even suggesting I was not adjusting it right. I've been doing my own setups since the late 80s. Finally they offered half off and I keep the bass. I figured hey! I'll just stick another neck on it. No luck. Nothing fit it. Last step was to toss it in the trash. I'm cool with budget gear but this was a headache.

What is the string length ?

I'm curious about their fretless bass

I didn't expect much shielding under the pickups but didn't expect it to have none which may cause some of that hum and P bass necks tend to be meatier but for the price it's about what I expected overall

I want to see you build your dream parts guitar, I’d love to do that some day and need some inspiration.

These are on Wish too but not branded as Glarry. I just got one for $67 shipped.

I have never shopped at Wish. I notice they are sponsoring an NBA time. Is it any good, overall? Pros = price, but what about cons? Thanks for the info. $67 is hard to beat.

These Gary basses sound pretty good for what you pay for them after you put a good amount of work them. Glary is perfect for people or kids who are just starting out and want a decent starter instrument.

When GLARRY installs a Floyd rose type trem on a model, I’ll be first in line to purchase one.!! The basses and guitars have been getting very good reviews. I have a lot of interest in these guitars now.

All guitars can have problems with fret sprout. When it comes to the Glarry's, I've set-up about 2 to 3 dozen at this point, and it's probably because I live in the dry desert air of west Texas, but about 3/4ths of have them needed the fret sprout filed. The first 3 or 4 I saw were really bad but they have improved greatly over the last year or so.

Trade Tuesday season 3. Road to a 50's or 60's Gibson/Fender. Probably not gonna happen, but would be fun to watch.

I bought one and with the amount of time and money I'd have to spend on luthier tools, it would've been better to just go with the Ibanez for a modding platform. It's the first instrument that I played for 30 minutes and never picked back up.

The neck on the glarry bass I bought warped so much that it is completely unplayable now and the truss rod is useless. Didn’t expect much from it anyway and its just been sitting in the rack, but has anyone else experienced this? I’ve never owned a bass before.

The P-bass glarry I’ve had for quite awhile has held true. If you bought that one directly from glarry and not one of the 2nds from eBay - I’m sure they’ll help you out

I wonder if there isn't a little more Quality control that goes into demo units they send out for review,,,
