📚 Description: Tonight, we check out Glarry's "most expensive" budget model guitar - the GTL Semi Hollow T-Style guitar. This is essentially their take on a bare-bones Thinline Tele. This guitar is not perfect, but if you know how to do a little bit of setup work and general maintenance - this can be a lot of fun for the money. The playability won't blow you away, but you'll be impressed how far $120 can take you!
We will also review a Glarry case which is something that I've always wanted to check out. If you ever sell a guitar without a case - it is usually harder to pack it and harder to find a buyer for it. You could really buy one of glarry's cheap $60 cases and likely charge the buyer an additional $100 just for having a case! On top of that - glarry ships the case in a box, so you'll get a free shipping box for your guitar!

    As an old rock dinosaur, $120.00 today is the equivalent of $15.36 in 1967, when I started playing, there were no playable guitars at that price. point. Would have loved to have one of these to start playing on.

    Agreed. This old guy started on a awful SG clone that cost about the same, and hindered my ability to learn as a new guitarist. These Glarry guitars are infinitely better than what I had available in this price range during the '70s-'80s.

    I play using Ibanez PS60 i purchased for about 160 pounds. This past Saturday I went to a guitar store planning to purchase a +/- £1000 Telecaster... purchased a new amp and left. There was no point. Was the sound better? ... a bit? Was it more comfortable to play? ... a bit? It might have been me just being xonditioned to think it's better because its more expensive... the difference was so miniscule I could not justify throwing 1k quid for it

    Please don't talk poorly about a budget-friendly guitar. Some of us are on fixed incomes (disabled, seniors, etc) are tucking $20 here and $10 there, building up enough to afford "trash" by your standard. There might be young kids too young to get a part time job and are lucky to earn cash by mowing lawns and raking leaves or whatever to afford something playable. My absolute pride and joy is an Epiphone Les Paul Special I that was well under $200. Before you destroy / smash any of those cheap guitars, if you're not going to donate it to a local school or music program, consider maybe a give-away or something on the channel? Some of us would love to have those guitars you'd easily reject.

    Bought a black on black Glary T style for $89. I was pretty decent as is. Put on some vintage style tuners, Tusq nut, swapped out the electronics with a Tele style EMG solderless pickup kit, fret polish. And it ended up being pretty much my #1. I bought it for a mod project but playing it stock I was pleasantly surprised. Ran it through a good amp and most would be none the wiser. I know there are many different beliefs out there but I go by the good player/good amp camp and not going balls out on the guitar cost. You want to throw down $2k for a LP or strat or whatever, cool. Life’s too short not to try to be happy with what you want. But that guitar plus the mods totaled $345 and it plays amazing.

    @@Madchris8828 the EMG pickup kit I bought was solderless. It’s great it has a system of miniature plug in type connectors for the pickups to the pots to the input jack and instructions. You don’t need to know anything other than what type of pickups or sound change you’re looking for. They made ones for a Telecaster replacement and I bought them on blind faith and it worked out. I bought a humbucker kit too and bought a blank Gibson Les Paul body type and put it in there. Just used a Phillips head screwdriver and a small adjustable wrench. If you want to mess around EMG makes a few different types and they’re a good bang for the buck.

    The string alignment over the fretboard usually can be set right with the "Fender neck adjustment" where pulling the neck to one side or the other centers the strings over the FB. Loosen the neck screws a bit if you are squeamish. You can glue the ferrules in also.

    Yup, plugging a guitar in for anything other than making sure its wired up properly and to test the performance of the vol / tone controls, switches etc is virtually irrelevant when it comes to testing to buy. The acoustic sound is very revealing and if a guitar is "dead" its obvious without plugging it in. The amp shapes most of the tone, like 75 percent, so unless you're using your own rig its pointless.

I'm somewhat experienced in mods, but what a headache everything has been with it. Ok, I'm back, new pick guard, new Fender turners, new bone nut. Tuned to open G. Actually like it now. Oh yeah, sanded the over spray out of the f hole, and painted the edges of the f hole white ( no room for binding)..

    Hi, I hope you're enjoying an amazing day. I'm a first time visitor to your channel and this is just the right KZread I've been looking for. I believe this is an awesome episode for me and for people just like me who are disabled in various ways.Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my needs and desires. I have rods and screws from the bottom of my skull to the top of my butt. My SI joints are also shot. I have chronic pain in my right hip area and thigh I have pins and needles throughout my entire lower extremities. I'm not paralyzed but it's impossible for me to stand or walk without a walker. So I can't stand and hold a guitar and it's very difficult me to hold a guitar on my right thigh. I'm on disability and have a budget less than zero. But what I do have is time to look for a guitar that possibly suits me. I'd like to find a very light guitar, of decent quality, for as little money of the universe will allow. I was a tech of various disciplines throughout my entire working life of approximately 50 years. I've been studying guitar technology along with amp and pedal technology and trust me when I say it's all going back to kindergarten tech for me. I'm sure whatever guitar I get I will be improved down to the last details over a period of time as money allows. But it's oh so very nice when one could start out with something halfway decent. I believe this guitar fits the Bill, and to be honest, to me, this find is better than expected. I was hoping to find something with a basswood body because I learned about how light they are. I found a very nice looking, natural stained dark, basswood body, used, Dean EVO Les Paul Style guitar that I liked very much and that was very inexpensive. Unfortunately it was really beat up and the price did not match the condition. But I learned something from the experience and that had value. I believe this guitar is going to do very well for me and the price can't be beat. It's a brand new guitar so nothing has to be refurbished. All I need to do is work on the neck of which I believe I could turn into a charm. The electronics are easy but I'll wait on that till I have money for better pickups and components to make it all sing. And now that you've mentioned it I'll also be looking forward to making a new Pick guard for it. In fact not only will I have a new guitar but I'll have a great new fun hobby as well. I believe for as long as I own it there'll always be room for improvements, upgrades, and customization. I believe that hard shell case will suit me and my guitar just fine. I believe a piece of memory foam around the upper neck and or headstock of that Les Paul might be very helpful to make it more compatible. The $60 price tag on the case is a plus and a big benefit to me. I'm happy to be able to afford one and not just a non-protective gig bag. This all fits very well within my budget. Thank you for a very enjoyable and informative episode. Thank you also for your thoughtfulness, kindness, and hard work while creating it. I won't be off to Glarry's just now except to sign up for their mailing list and see about discounts. I might have to wait for crazy discount Fridays, manic madness Mondays, but I believe it will be worth the wait and save me a few more bucks as well. I'll tell you what I am going to do right away is back off from this computer, fire up one of my favorite cigars, crack open an ice cold non-alcoholic Heineken, and make a toast to Glarry's guitars and Trogly's Guitar Show KZread channel. PS. It would be nice to see an episode somewhere dedicated to great guitars for those with disabilities. I believe I can think of at least two maybe three and I'm sure someone who's more knowledgeable than I could possibly think of several more. Enjoy everything, every moment, my friend.

    I’ve been playing 40 years,, never professional but constant. And have had strats,, Kramers ,, BC riches over the years and now I have a glarry tele style electric and I did the intonation ,, lowered the action,,rounded fret board edges and ends of frets and threw some super slinky 9 gauge strings on it,,,and it sounds and plays great! Just as good as any other guitar I’ve owned,,, the only drawback back is the lightness of the body… so when you are standing up playing it wants to do neck dives. But besides that as long as you get your set up right,,, really good guitar for the money 💰.

  • @bradleyard4195
    @bradleyard41953 жыл бұрын

    This would be a good modding platform. The neck pickup isn't half bad, though I may swap out the bridge pickup for something a little lower in output. The bridge itself has got to go, though, because you can visibly see they drilled the holes for the saddle screws way off. The ferrules could be glued in place, or even fixed with a dab or two of wood filler, so that isn't a deal breaker, and locking tuners would be a consideration, as well as a Tusq nut. Guitar: $120 StewMac 3-saddle Tele bridge: $45 StewMac "Golden Age" single coil: $40 StewMac Tusq nut: $12 eBay locking tuners (Genuine Fender): $54 So, for $271 (plus tax and a little elbow grease), you could have a decent, gigable Tele copy. Yes, you could buy a Squier Affinity Tele for $250, or a Harley Benton Tele copy for $159, but you aren't getting the f-hole, and you aren't getting the neck 'bucker. Harley Benton sells a true hollowbody for $250, but you're giving up the Tele-style bridge for a Strat-style fixed bridge and you lose the bridge single coil for a humbucker. So, if you dig the old-school "Thinline" vibe and don't want to compromise, I'd get this and mod it. If you don't feel like working on an instrument to make it better, there's options, but you have to make compromises. Not a bad deal, either way. I'm definitely tempted to get one of these and mod it to get a nice little budget Thinline copy.

    The reason all Glarry T style guitar bridge plates don't line up with the notch in the pick guard is because they route the bridge cavity way too far back for some unknown reason. Every one I've looked at is about 1/4"-1/2" set back from where it should be. You'll notice they use super extra long saddle screws to compensate for this to get the saddle to move forward far enough to set intonation.

    A easy fix for the strings being low on the fretboard. Remove the brass saddles from the GBE adjustment screws and turn them 180 degrees so string groves will be on the bottom. Now the three upper string grooves will be up and the bottom three will be down. That should pull both set of string to the center of the fretboard. Just a guess. If anyone tries this let me know if it worked.
