I just got back from VCF Midwest 18 2023, where I found two of the rarest Macs ever made - a Daystar Genesis MP clone from 1995 with FOUR processors, and a Mac IIfx.

@@BilisNegra He recently did a couple of videos on it and he was having all kinds of issues with the cpu card. You could tell in the videos he was super frustrated with it, which if you watch his videos you know he's very chill. He did eventually find the issue and fix it. If I had to guess he let it go because of that frustration lol. I suggest checking those videos out, they're pretty good.

The brotherhood of the traveling Daystar, the nerdy version of the sisterhood of the traveling pants.
The $7 camera really makes it look vintage, especially the picture portion
At the risk of spoiling the surprise, BeOS is quite happy running on that Daystar. I wish I could post a jpg in the comments. I've got a great screenshot I did in 1998 of my Daystar running Sheepshaver -> MacOS 7.5 -> DOS -> Win 3.11 -> a Mac Plus emulator -> a CP/M emulator.
Hi! On your day star you should try running strata studio pro 1.75 blitz. It's the 3D software cyan used to make Myst, and the 1.75 blitz version is said to be optimized to fully use the 604 processor and it's MP variants. I'd really love a side by side comparison of how renders are handled by this machine against a regular 604 mac.
So glad you ended up with that MP!
It was awesome to finally meet you in person at this year's VCF! I'm sorry we didn't have more time to talk, other than just a handshake and "I love your videos".
The IIfx was the dream as a teen Mac fan, and remains so to this day. Was the peak of the 68000 Mac era.
It was a pleasure meeting you at VCFMW, I was that goof in the beige suit and floppy hair! Looking forward to seeing more of the Daystar!
From the moment I saw that DayStar Genesis MP I instantly knew who its previous owner was. Hi Colin/ThisDoesNotCompute! Cool find. I'm curious to see if BeOS will even install on there (ofc it'll fail many times because this IS ActionRetro lol) and whether or not it'll have issues with the quad CPU card in there... If I had it I'd try and XPostFacto install Mac OS X to see if it'd install/even run properly, since Mac OS X loves multi-cores and seeing it run on a quad-604e would be interesting. Also, I don't live in the Midwest nor can I get out there easily, so I ofc wasn't there at VCFMW, but an appearance at VCF East 2024 is a possibility... I'll see what I can manage. Great video! Thanks for the shoutout as always too!

There is no point is doing anything but installing BeOS on this thing. Nothing else will do it justice. If he were to change the processors for a G3 is just becomes another tsunami based computer. Might as well save that for a 9500

As cool as those powerhouse macs are (and they ARE cool!), I think my favorite part was all the bitcrunched pictures you took at VCF Midwest. They had that signature 90s digital camera look that gave it such a nostalgic feeling. Great vid!

I missed it this year. I did get a hold of a vcf forum member passing through my area, and he took my PET-2001 to give to someone who could appreciate it more. I also gave away my Disney Sound Source and an XT/AT kv (keyboard and video, no mouse) switcher.

@@breakallthethings Sweet! The guy who delivered it said the guy who grabbed it needed one for his collection. It needed a character rom and a few other roms. The tape drive had to be re-belted, too. I'm sure it went to someone who would appreciate it.
Very jealous of your IIfx. These were the Mac Pro (2019) of their day; ludicrously expensive and intended only for the absolute top end power user. This thing is packed with extra processors. They spared no expense.
I really enjoyed meeting you at VCFMW! I don’t think I was there when you got the IIfx, but it was neat to watch you fiddle with the Thinkpad on Saturday.
The perfect 90s tech masterpiece to share a name with my grandmother's car.
Score! As a guy who doesn't get that excited about the platform, I think the 90s was an exciting era for Macs. Third parties making stuff like the Daystar, and all the other weird peripherals in the MacMall catalog that you'd never find for the PC, are things you don't see much of anymore.

Mac mall and mac connection were full of crazy stuff I always wanted even if I didn't know what half of it was and definitely couldn't afford on my allowance and lawn mowing money at the time lol
Great to meet you at VCFMW! Thanks for doing such awesome stuff. Loved the montage. :)
Was hoping to say 'hi' at VCF Midwest, couldn't seem to find ya. Hope you had a good time in my neck of the woods.
I like how you were able to take pictures of the event with your dashcam.
the montage at the end had 2008 youtube windows movie maker vibes lol
I’m so glad I got to see you and a bunch of other KZreadrs at VCF! (You signed my PowerBook)
I wandered by a bit after the photo was taken and ended up accidentally buying "who hurt u more?" 😆 I've since accidentally knocked the motherboard out the back of the case, turns out ALL the screws were missing… but hey I got a Sound Blaster and a tape drive! If I can get it back together, it'll get a K6-2 and some more RAM and be a decent little Socket 7 machine.
I love that the less yellowed plastic around the DayStar logo is clearly in the shape of an Apple sticker
That IIfx is in AMAZING condition!!! Incredible find!!
It was great to see you at VCFMW! I'm glad you enjoyed our SGI setup. 🙂
I had the Daystar Genesis MP 528+ because a buddy at a computer recycling store saved it for me. We filled every DIMM slot with 8mb sticks. Dell drive rails work in that case, mounted an old 4gb 7200rpm SCSI-SCA drive + adapter. Sold it because I had no workflows that used the multiprocessing abilities.
Nice montage at the end
It was fantastic Chatting with you! Your videos Definitely influnenced My purchase of A dual 1.8 G5
I almost took a job when I graduated Drexel in the early 90s because there was a Mac ii fx on what was to be my desk 😅
I saw you briefly on Sunday as I was walking in! 😊 what a cool show. It was awesome to see everyone sharing a common interest in technology. A very powerful feeling!
It was cool meeting you at VCF! Unfortunately, I was pretty awkward haha.

Cool! Is the IIfx really that rare? I had no idea! That machine is what made me want to get into retro collecting! I couldn’t find one so I bought an SE and a “regular” II on eBay, but the II had been upgraded to a IIfx! I now have two IIfxes and a regular II among my now vast retro collection! I have a Nubus Ethernet adapter but have not had much success getting it to work. I have videos on my channel of it.
I don't know why but "computers that have had the misfortune of following me home" had me in giggles. Love the silliness. Edit: "A man comprised of exactly 8 bits" had me laughing. Good one!
Looks like you had fun, someday I hope to attend. Anyways I am going to be very interested what you do with the IIFX. What rate upgrades exist? And watching it run something like 68 Linux or NetBSD will grab my attention. I have never seen a video featuring the IIFX, so yeah should be great.
It was great to meet you at VCFMW. Glad to see that heavy iron made it home with you.
Back in 1995 I can only imagine how insane that Daystar was. Truly insane power and I Imagine the closest equivalent on the PC side were the ultra high end multiprocessor 440FX based Pentium Pro workstations made by HP.
I have this lingering déjà vu, that i have seen this tower before, and indeed, i had. It's so cool to see many of KZreadrs you like to follow but in one video, like some classmates after school 😂
Excited for you and BeOS on the Mac clone. :-)
Sorry you picked up the con crud, Sean - but you had fun. I can't wait to see what shenanigans occur with the IIfx. Rest up and get well!

Been a subscriber for a long time. Your videos are always interesting and funny. Keep up the good work!
I saw that IIFX on your table and thought I missed something about it on here. It looks like it’s in extremely good shape.
VCF was a good time. So many cool systems to see and play with, and tons of games. I played Wolf3D on the Cursed Mac for a bit while I was there.
"Not Steve's Daughter" -- Uuhfff! That's cold.
That "Not Apple II" computer in the montage looks like an OSI Challenger (Challenger 4P, maybe?)
awesome Macs, keep up the good vids 👍
@Action Retro Install Mac OS 8.6 on it to take even more advantage of the multiprocessor capabilities! And go full on SSD with it. Maybe see if there's a G4 CPU card upgrade.
I can't wait for that BeOS video!
That Genesis reminds of my first gaming computer build, a Windows 98 box, that I put in a monster, hell for stout case.
Can you make an “must have apps on PowerPC Macs in 2023” video I would be very pleased!🙏
Hopefully next year the con is laid out better. I missed you and colin?! Dang. I picked up a Dell 8100. Beast of a laptop
that complete IIfx was a pretty damn good $400 purchase tbh.
Do you think BeOS will support the four CPU's in that Daystar? I suspect the board is to proprietary for it to see more than one CPU.
@Jabjabs
8 ай бұрын
It is a very fair point. It is one thing to have 4 CPU's but if it doesn't map in a standard fashion then other OS's will not see it. Like the customer software merely to get Photoshop to see it on Mac OS. Hopefully we are wrong.
Quite the PowerPC blast!
That's the Mac Clone from This Does Not Compute!
Kaonashi? You have some fine taste in music my friend.
Macintosh iifx first boot and review! (Well coming soon...)
128MB was a ludicrous amount of RAM in 1990, IIRC most PC didn't get that much until the late 90s/early 2000s
@Toonrick12

There was also a Motorola branded clone on a table outside before you even got into the venue but I know it sold pretty early in the day.

Nah, no BeOS. Give that CPU daughtercard to dosdude and have him put four G4s on it, then install OS X with XPF and create the fastest Daystar Genesis MP that will ever exist.
I’m amazed how much that camera’s video look like genuinely old film. Maybe a bit too saturated. I can see someone artistically inclined filming a movie with that one :)
Awesome vid! This morning was browsing FB Marketplace and saw someone selling a boxed Umax Supermac c600 with manuals for $25. Sadly it sold almost immediately to someone else. Not as rare but I've never seen one with the box.
I remember going halves with my dad plopping down a whopping $16,000.00 to buy RAM in 1991 to max out our two Mac IIfx machines. We made our money using Photoshop with them, so the extra RAM was necessary. Didn’t hurt that we also were each using the expensive as hell Photoshop Accelerator Cards.
@JaredConnell

Photoshop accelerator cards? Never seen those, do you remember what they were called??
GENESSIIIISSS ❤ … potato-cam for the win!
Nice haul.
I think these are awesome computers. I do not understand why apple did not put a 2x350mhz in the Apple 9600 instead of just 2x200. It would have been an awesome competitor to the Daystar Genesis MP! I am still looking for a MacIIfx myself.
Bear PC cameo heck yeah!!
Thanks so much for the recap, Sean.i It seems like a BLAST there!
I thought it was cool that you got this system from Colin. His channel and yours are my favourite for old school tech content. :-D
I have a Daystar Genesis MP 800+, but I'd say the Maxxboxx is probably a rarer find. You could also get those in quads.
You had me at ring ring thing
That camera seems to be using a pinhole, instead of a lens, as a light aperture. Very likely, given the price.
That marathon g4 is interesting. I have no idea where the top handle came from. But I thought it was interesting and could be cool to someone at vcf. When I got the machine I thought it would be a CAD or specialized build. But turns out just a 933MHZ g4 and 1GB ram. With an ati rage. Still neat none the less for that was curbled
please please see how many machines that daystar processor card will run in, i would love to see that.
Please do 6 monitors on the IIFX, always wanted to see that!
I got the $7 cam but the low resolution version came. Still, I added a focus adjustment to it.
so i'm just watching this mp just go from KZread to youtube channel i thought he was joking about selling it
