I Found An Abandoned Island Off The Coast of Ireland

Come explore Ireland's least-visited island with me. Inishkea island was abandoned in the late 1920s and early 1930s after a number of young fisherman were drowned at sea. Inishkea North and South islands were totally self-sufficient, even providing food back to the mainland as the island was unaffected by the Irish famine.

    That was very interesting, thank you so much! The quiet reminded me of the aftermath of hurricane Katrina a bit. Of course New Orleans isn't anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico, but all the empty houses, with no one about, and no traffic at all made me feel like I was in a zombie movie. Living right next to a park where I'd see shadows moving at night didn't help. I'm very much looking forward to the vidoes you mentioned! Thank you!

    Deirbhile sound like my kinda lady, and would do well in fending off the Tinder creeps these days :D I always wonder if the last resident who stepped off the island understood how significant that was, and if it felt like grief or sadness to be leaving.

    This sort of video makes me want to buy a small parcel somewhere and build or restore a small cabin for vacation use or possibly even several months a year. Helping rebuild the local micro-economy of a place like that while getting to know local neighbors would be great. Of course, it sounds like there is no remaining local community on this particular island at all, so it probably wouldn’t be a good fit for my idea.

    I've enjoyed all your travel videos! I'll preface my question by saying that I know nothing about keeping sheep, but I have seen some videos where professional shearers have shown shearing sheep whose fleece had been badly matted and the neglected animals were suffering because of it. I'm curious as to who (if anyone) owns or tends to the sheep on this long-abandoned island?

  • @Clisare

    @Clisare

    I do think they’re owned by people who own land on the island but I asked, and I’m pretty sure she said they mostly just eat the grass on the island. Shearing is a good Q. 🤔

    Clisare, I just wanted to say hello. I hope that you are doing well. My brother and I want to go to Ireland and visit. I went to the Tartan Scottish museum here in the U.S. I gave the guy my great grandparents and grandparents names on my mom and dad's side. The guy looked it up and my whole family names were all from Scotland. That is 9 tartans in my family. I might have Irish heritage too.
