Having just ordered a new BMW X3, I’m starting to wonder if I should have stuck with Audi. It seem’s BMW engines are made of plastic. Can’t understand why coolant expansion bottle is opaque rather than a translucent white, design floor. Well done.

I own an Audi Q5, and they are notorious for coolant issues. Unfortunately that seems to be the norm these days.

Hello, I have a question regarding low coolant problem on my bmw. I bought an used bmw 116i 2015 model 6 months ago. It showed a low coolant warning 3 weeks before today during a morning cold start. A local workshop just topped up with tap water that day. Today again, I get the same warning with the coolant level low after starting in the early cold mornings. I cannot notice any leaks below the car. Would you please know what might be the problem?

There's a reasonable chance something (water pump, coolant talk, etc.) has a slight leak that only shows up once your driving. It would be good to take off the under-engine tray and look for any signs leaking, including dried fluid spots.

@@yodersgarage Thanks for your response! Lemme have closer look at the mentioned possible leaks then. I have been looking for answers on this topic ,and some of it ranges from broken seals, pipes or even coolant caps (which sounded less expensive) to coolant entering the engine and burning off, cracks in engine (which sounded too expensive) etc. Not sure what could be the problem in my case.

@@SS-kp2nr if you're burning coolant, you'll probably be able to smell it and/or see it in the exhaust, and you'll need a head gasket replacement if not more. Hopefully that's not it! Typically you'll be able to smell burning coolant soon after startup during the engine's initial warm up. My suggestion is to get an eye on the bottom of the water pump and see if there's even the slightest sign of a drip. Mine wasn't obvious at first, but when I was able to get a picture of the weep hole I knew that was at least part of the problem. Luckily coolant has a tendency to leave residue once it has dried, so you should be able to find traces if it's leaking anywhere.

I got pressure test done and no issues according to bmw dealership but every time I get service I get warning and then I fill and nothing for a month or longer then would park on a steep driveway and see a puddle underneath fill it up and then nothing for months. What could it be

That's basically what was happening to me at the beginning. What are the weather conditions when it leaks? Mine started when it was colder out at night (around 40 degrees). My guess is it's the pump shaft seal just like mine.

Sounds like the exact problem I had. The bearing is wearing out causing a leak when it gets cold enough and the shaft shrinks. Hard to say how long until it's a serious issue, but it's best to take care of it now rather than get stranded. I would guess somewhere around $1300 at a dealer and maybe $750 at an independent shop. It's hard to say, as pricing can vary wildly depending on where you go. It's definitely something you can do yourself, you just need time.
