    I apologize for the tired Kyle presenting today's video! Since I'm running out of the door to drive out to California, some of the Out of Spec team will be working with this vehicle testing its range and charging curve! I wanted to at least share my 2 cents about the Kona and it was great and refreshing to take it for a little drive. If it could charge faster than mid 70kW peak range, it would be a totally fantastic car!

    I am with you on buying out of state, Kyle. I wanted a 2019 Kona EV at the time so I got one in CA. Same with my current Polestar 2. Unfortunately enthusiasts go to great lengths to get a car they actually want whereas the average consumer would consider such an option wildly inconvenient and get a different, oftentimes lesser car in favor of buying close to home. As for the battery, Hyundai switched to SKI away from LG and there have been no known issues with the SKI battery packs also used in the e-Niro. And you are 100% correct - the 2019 -2021 Kona EV had a plastic screen HUD.

    One advantage of the Kona EV is its size. At 4.2m, it’s over 1/2 meter shorter than Ioniq 5 ou TM3. It’s more practical in Europe where roads and car park spaces are smaller than North America or Australia. And such a small car with such a range and efficiency, there aren’t many in the market. Also, for those with a smaller budget, it’s now easy to find second hand Kona EV models 😉

    This is my second Kona EV, I had a 2019 that I put over 40k miles on. Not 1 issue. Was rear ended last January, had it repaired and traded in for a 2020 Ultimate in March. Could not be happier with this car. Currently it has 17k on it with zero issues. I commute 120 miles a day and charge it daily. My only complaint would be the tires it came with, which I swapped out the day it came home.

    Great review, as always. I’m looking at the Kia EV6, which you praise for is performance. My concerns with it are: only wired Apple CarPlay, visibility in back, battery overheating that occurred when you tested it in preproduction and pricing and availability which will be well above MSRP. Dealerships in Portland say 5 to 6 K above MSRP and a 3-6 month wait. Would like to know if Kia has fixed the overheating issue. Keep those great reviews coming!

    Very enjoyable vid Kyle (love your channel), your enthusiasm for the car is shared by Auto Expert KZreadr, John Cadogan who bought a Kona EV as his first venture into EVs. He's a smart cookie & quickly identified that the eco tyres were holding it back, so he spent a mere AU$1000 for alloys shod with Michelin Pilots & it completely transformed the car. 👍 I definitely feel that there's a place for a small efficient runaround like the Kona EV, I hope Hyundai keep it in the range & upgrade it to a purpose-built EV platform.

    I'm a new owner of a Niro EV. I would have bought the Kona but size made a difference. I use my Niro as a daily commute vehicle, 250km per day. It's saved me a ton already over my Tuscon which I also loved. The Kona and Niro definitely still have a place. They're smaller than the Ioniq5 and EV6 by a large amount and in a city like Toronto, that matters. That being said, I do have a Runway Red EV6 on order, I managed to get one of only 200 cars coming to Canada. The final decision was made after watching your review of it. And I apologize for yesterday's comment about not liking Hyundai Kia.

I leased it for cheap and when the lease is up there will be many other options available at that point in time. It’s my first EV and so far I really like it. For what it has, how it rides and it’s efficiency it’s hard to beat. I have snows for it but my real snow vehicle will be my new Tucson hybrid, another great Hyundai product!

    Just doing some Canadian comparisons... the 2021 Preferred and Ultimate packages came with the heat pump , while the "Essential" did not. For 2022 - they've dropped the Essential package and are keeping the heat pumps. Ultimate still has the 8" HUD. Last year's front fascia with the dimpled design helped to hide the charging door , since it had an mirrored "opening" on the driver's right. This year's looks too much like a Tesla nose. Starting prices this year are $44,000 and $49,000 for the two models , and the Ioniq 5 is supposed to start at 46K Essential (base) 49K Preferred/54K Preferred Long range (rwd). So it's going to be a tough sell for the much smaller Kona at those prices. Plus the rebate incentives available (5000 Federal/3000 provincial) will apply to the Kona and the Ioniq.

    I know this video is a few months old, but I'm currently considering leasing the Kona EV/Niro EV vs. Ioniq5/EV6. The e-GMP twins have terrible lease rates, while the Kona/Niro have good rates. All the dealers I've talked to said that the reason for that is because Hyundai/Kia do NOT pass through the $7500 federal tax credit to you for leasing the Ioniq5/EV6, but do for the Niro/Kona. This only applies to leasing. For a purchase you still get that up-tp $7500 tax credit.

    I have a 2021 Kona that I got after your earlier videos. I looked at Niro too, but Hyundai gave a way better price than Kia. I love it, it's very efficient I get 300 miles, quick, more hatchback-y than SUV-y which I love... The only complaints I have are, as you mentioned grip in the rain which is really not good on the highway I am very cautious, and the missing adaptive cruise because it's a Limited model. Since it's a lease I will upgrade to Ioniq 5 after the lease. But I am very glad I came across your videos and chose Kona over other options I was looking at cars.

    I used to own a 2020 Kona Electric Ultimate (used to be the highest model) and I was really impressed with the interior technology and the amazing efficiency (similar to our Model 3 LR except in the winter). However, after it got past 10k miles, it started having problems. The adaptive cruise control would randomly stop working and when it did, you would have no cruise control at all, dealer couldn’t figure out why and couldn’t fix it. 2 of the door lock actuators failed. The electric motor had to be replaced because it started making noise. The battery issues were the final straw, and combined with the huge inflation of in used car market, we were able to sell it for $2500 more than what we owed and bought a 2021 Model 3 LR to replace it. The Tesla isn’t a great car, but it’s better than the Kona in many ways. The Kona was fine, but the ride quality wasn’t good, the brake system is horrible and so difficult to modulate, the road noise was very Tesla like. It was a fine car overall but had some significant faults. We kept our 2019 Bolt instead of the Kona even though the Kona was a better car on paper. The car market is way different now (we bought ours right at the beginning of the pandemic when car dealers were desperate to unload their stock) and got more than $10k discount.

    Similar experience for me. I'll be trading in for an ID.4 I think. Have had motor issues, wheel bearing issues, AC leak and finally the battery recall, all in the span of 3 years and 40,000 km. As a complete package its a really stellar FWD car, but overall it really is just too slapped together. Seems Hyundai didn't even make most of the vehicle themselves, with pretty much the entire powertrain being supplied from OEMs, it's no wonder that their technicians can't seem to resolve the relatively common problems. At the moment there's just much better offerings coming out from other manufacturers, and this facelift model still doesn't have AWD available.

    @@0hypnotoad0 Correction: Hyundai is the OEM, so all the parts used in producing the Kona are by definition "OEM" parts vs "after market" parts.... (OEM parts include inhouse and outsource parts) Who actually manufactures the parts is not a factor in its OEM designation... Also Toyota and Hyundai has shown that "outsourced" parts can be extremely reliable... And it does not make it easier for a technician, if the parts were produced inhouse or not. I have done basic repairs on my cars and it's never been a factor in how I did the repair if it was outsourced or not. But after your experience I can't blame you for buying the (dieselgate VW) ID 4 over the superior Ioniq 5, good luck with it...

  • @0hypnotoad0

    @0hypnotoad0

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@nc3826 It's a matter of price and capability, I want to use the ID 4 it as a utility vehicle and for mild offroading, mostly for work use. It has the most affordable dual motor price point of any EV, and has enough ground clearance to actually qualify itself as a true crossover. Love the way the Ioniq 5 looks, amazing charging capabilities, but I just don't have a use for a giant hatchback with low ground clearance and no built-in towing options. May be off on my "OEM" terminology, but the fact remains that the vast majority of the powertrain in the Kona was provided by Siemens and LG Chem. Hyundai actually designs engines and (many) transmissions for their ICE cars, but the Kona Electric is not the same. It's a compliance car - a good one at that, but it's still Hyundai "playing" at making EVs. It's not a surprise that they've had issues and been extremely slow to rectify them, they are leaning entirely on parts suppliers and aren't manufacturing their own parts.

  • @nc3826

    @nc3826

    @@0hypnotoad0The fact remains the so called "compliance car" (BS meaningless term) has superior efficiency to ground up BEVs. And when was there a recall of its motors? And even the 1st Teslas had lousy QC, Also all BEVs are based on outsourced Asian battery tech.. So they should have outsourced it to SK instead, like their sister brand KIA. But at least Hyundai did a better job of dealing with the substandard batteries then GM. And your mindset is not a surprise, since it based on the common SM vertical integration mantra meme. So good luck believing in it. Lastly Im not trying to belittle the ID 4 and. I hope will suit your needs reliably for years. But based on current ICEVs from VW and Hyundai, it would indicate the Ionqi 5 would be the safer bet. But time will tell will, if thats the case?

I cannot go for a test drive as the dealer doesn't have cars available.. they are kind of rare these days.. waiting list is about 1 year. Still, I would like to order one but I'm concerned about the noise. Thanks.

    We debating Kona vs Bolt to replace the Prius we are giving our kid. Wanting a small EV that we can run around here, middle of the corn fields in Illinois, and neither of us like the leaf. Also the leaf’s odd charge plug doesn’t so much to win me over. Currently I’m leaning more towards to Bolt. I like the look of the Kona but it seems Bolt is more mature of a design. Purpose built instead of compromised into life.

As I’ve told many others here who don’t live in the Ice corridors, RWD is terror on iced bridges and mountain roads FWD iS MUCH safer AND Relaxing to drive. Almost 300lb ft of torque though does not belong on a front wheel drive with low friction tires. And no anti lift tech.

    Have to disagree strongly, if you’re driving around in snow you should have winter tires and with all the electric nanny’s cars have these days there zero reason for an electric fwd platform. I want my tires focused on turning and not trying to defy physics splitting traction to steer and accelerate. I rented a Kona fairly recently while my Model 3 was getting repaired and I put around 1700 miles on it in 2 1/2 weeks and it was a great car to drive but the fwd was a deal breaker for me, I wouldn’t get one personally for that reason alone.

    One other thing that the Kona (and Niro) has over the Ioniq 5 is that you can fit in a spare tire (of course it doesn't come with one, but you can fit one in). I might be a rare person who actually cares that those are going the way of the dodo, but I think it's disgusting that the industry has just decided that we don't need them anymore.

    the e-gmp cars are awesome for sure, but I think kona is still certainly relevant: kona ev has more renge than ioniq 5, is more efficient, and is smaller, which is a good thing for a LOT of people, including most people who live in cities. For my use-case I would either get a kona or wait a few months longer for ioniq3/ev4 rather than buy a huge ioniq 5 or ev6, even if they were the same price (which they aren't).

    It’s been well documented (including on this very KZread channel) that RWD EVs are just as good as FWD EVs in the snow. FWD ICE cars benefit from a heavy engine over the drive axel. EVs have the heavy battery in the middle and basically 50/50 weight distribution, so it doesn’t matter which wheels are the drive wheels.

FWD or RWD, the smooth application of power and low-speed torque from electric motors already makes them fantastic in the snow.

The Kona is a great entry level EV for those just starting out and all the options that are included make it amazing. I don't see it going away anytime soon. And I seen the 5, It is kind of weird, so suffice to say I am willing to bet that the Kona EV out sells it. The Kona and 5 are not even in the same category. Try comparing the 5 to something in its class like the new Equinox coming out this year and see if the 5 is still all that. Come on, don't knock all these smaller sedan EVs made for those who commute in cities. There is a place for the Kona and Chevy Bolts. Not everyone wants a big SUV
