Been having waaaaay more fun that I expected, taking the more practical and "cheaper" route instead of going full madness with a model 3 performance or something like that. Also the drive assistance features work exceptionally well without beeping the whole day like a friends model 3 does :)

    I couldn't help it but to giggle everytime you said the car's model (and you said it a lot!) because Kona sounds exactly like "cona", which is one of the Portuguese slang words for the female genitalia. And in case you're wondering, yes Hyundai had to change the name of that model exclusively for the portuguese market because of that. Here it's called Kauai. Greetings from Portugal. 🙂

    110volt charging is fine depending on your mileage-per-day. I mean, if your commute is 150 miles each way, it's not for you (but that also means you are spending like 4-5 hours driving every day). If your daily commute is like 15 miles, then you are only charging it 30 miles overnight. If you don't quite recoup your full charge overnight at 110v, you still have gobs of battery left and occasionally might grab a quick charge. I'm guessing if you live in the desert then 30 miles a day sounds piddling ;). Me, I telecommute anyway so I might drive 40 miles round trip to pick up a kid and run errands (and not every day).

    It seems like nearly all EVs these days are being built on a "skateboard" platform, where the power source, the suspension and all or most of the structural strength is separate from the body and interior of the car. I gotta wonder what the potential is for making custom bodies like they used to do in the early days of the ICE cars.

  • @ThisGuyRides

    Platforms nowadays have been developed to support both electric and combustion drivetrains. The unibody still is the structure, drivetrain components, electric or combustion, are suspended from it. Traction batteries just make the underside seem very flat.

    I would think this is extremely impractical because an ICE powerplant is many times more packagable than a large battery array.

  • @scottkempton6085

    @scottkempton6085

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@MJorgy5 An ICE powerplant (and the transmission, and all the pumps, belts, hoses, etc) together are a pretty big lump that has to be accommodated in the design of a car. If the battery array was strong enough to be used as a structural member, then there would be one small lump (the electric motor) between the front and/or rear wheels, and that huge lump of the gas engine and associated components goes away, leaving the entire space above and between the tires completely open. If it were possible, and if I had the $$, I'd convert a 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88.

  • @billplaschka9279

    @billplaschka9279

    Жыл бұрын

    The Oldsmobile project is most definitely possible…whether you want to spend the money doing it is another. Easiest way is getting used Tesla batteries and a RWD Tesla starter pack which has just about everything needed to do the conversion…but it costs about $21-$25,000USD just for the parts. People spend that kind of money hot rodding with gas engines so I can see that becoming more of a thing.

    Still because this electric Kona was derived from an ice platform instead of Kona i would get either Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 not just because are developed from the ground to be electric but are more spacious inside have more features, are faster, handles better + batteries are bigger to last longer between charging points and any of those look much cooler inside-out.

  • @smoguli

    @smoguli

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@poplaurentiu4148 from what I've seen on range and efficiency tests of both the Kona and the ioniq 5, even if the Kona has a smaller battery it has a better range because it's more efficient than the ioniq 5. But the ioniq 5 has much better charging speed, so the fact that it's less efficient is not that important if you can charge it 2x faster than the Kona of course. Watch some of Bjorn Nyland videos and you'll see for yourself.

    We drove 'em all and settled on an e-golf. On paper it was the worst one (shortest range, least power, etc), but when you actually drove them, the golf was easily the best. The Golf is a pretty hard car to beat, and the e-golf is the quickest car I've ever owned.

  • @billplaschka9279

    @billplaschka9279

    Жыл бұрын

    While I agree that the eGolf has the best car characteristics of many electric cars out there it’s biggest failing was it’s small battery followed by its low power. The range is dismal. Too bad VW hadn’t taken the initiative to put in 60kwh of battery. It was possible to do so as a German company did a pack for the eGolf to show off what they were capable of. That car had 400+kms range just like the Kona EV. All things considered the Kona EV is a great hot hatch that would be an amazing deal at $35,000 CAD … not so compelling at $46,000 CAD. Take off the government incentive and it’s effectively $41,000 and seems a steal compared to a Tesla or Volvo, but not so much compared to the Ioniq5, though bigger and more sophisticated is none to exciting to drive in RWD models.

    Being able to completely disable the Traction Control, shows Hyundai are more in touch with their buyers then other manufacturers. If they carry that through to the EV versions of their large cars, they'll win buyers from the performance car markets. As for gears, Porsche will argue why extra gears are useful for EVs.

    I'm not sure what you had to eat on this day but it is by far the funniest video that you have made to date! You had me falling off out of my chair. Keep grinding and being funny Sarah (who is made of Unobtainium).

    The squealing tires when you gave it the e-beans was funny, but then when you switched to the outside view it actually smokes the tires a bit! Maybe the electric future won't be boring after all 😁 When I first saw a Kona hybrid at a car show, I thought it was more hatch than SUV/Crossover, and this electric one just seems to have even more hatch vibes to me. I'm pretty sure the hybrid would be a lot less fun, though. I also like the spaceship noises for the pedestrian warning, but waiting for somebody to make one that truly sounds like George Jetson's briefcase "car". Fun review!

    You’re so much fun to arch Sarah. I would love if you got a chance to review a model s plaid. I have mixed feelings about it, but you have never given a car 5 beans. If that doesn’t get 5 beans then I don’t know what would. Keep up the great work you do!

    This was a nice refreshing and more detailed look on the Kona EV instead of your typical run of the mill take it out and spin it then hate it or love it reviews. Cool to see the underside and other bits of makeup for the Kona EV!

    I always thought that the button was just for the stability control system, but maybe on some cars it's both. My car doesn't have traction control, I can spin the wheels all day. But do still have that button.

    Cool review! You're the "Busta Rhymes" of the car review world! The Kona E is a compelling EV. I think it would look better in a bright blue paint! Cheers!

    Hi Sarah you made me laugh when you road tested this car. Wheel spinning it everywhere looks fun. Considering my next car & going electric due to rry high fuel cost here in the UK. Currently driving a Mercedes A Class Executive 220d AMG auto hatchback. Had a number of other Mercedes & over them but to own an electric version is too expensive. So your research & footage helps with what option there are out there. Many thanks & enjoy your humor & enthusiasm & hard work. Best regards Stephen from Doddinghurst in the UK.
