As an owner of EVs for the last 10 years I have owned a 2012 and 2013 Chey Volt and 2015 Nissan leaf, a 2018 Chevy Bolt EV and now a 2022 Hyundai Kona EV. This is the most knowledgeable sales person I have seen who knows exactly what hes selling. In 2012 The sales person said to me "Ill be honest , I sell trucks and I dont know anything about the Volt" What a breath of fresh air!

How did u find the 2015 leaf, I’ve owned mine for a year, I love it, cheap, enough range for everything I do, second car for long trips. Im saving a heap on fuel and no lease or loan so it’s cheap as. I have dogs that fit in the leaf no problem with it’s high roof, which the Kona looks to have.

The question the sales staff always avoid is how much will the GPS navigation map updates be. You can usually get lifetime map updates with the portable separate GPS navigators but the built in ones often takes over $500 for a map updates leading to running your navigation on a portable unit or off your phone after a few years if you're navigating to a newer part of town or there's been some major freeway updates.

Well I must say, "Good Job Sir " 😎I have a 2018 40KWh Nissan Leaf Tekna myself & I have watched so many reviews of all the diferent EV's over the last few years, so I dont know how Ive missed this one, but Im glad I found it. I have always fancied the 64KWh Kona, but I have never found enough in depth info on it to convince me to change from my Leaf, as it is actuallly quite a good car, but I think with all this extra knowledge now this may have persuaded me to change to a 2022 Kona ? With so much comprehensive explanation from yourself in less than 40 minutes, it answered alot of the unanswered questions I had, this has got to be one of the most informative & knowledgable reviews about the Kona a 5* + review I would say. If I wasnt in the UK & closer to your garage, I wouldnt hessitate to visit, it gives customers a lot more confidence to buy when the garage dealer has so much knowledge in the cars they are selling. That is 100% true about you & if this isnt your garage then I hope Ed appreciates your knowledge ($$) haha & if you are already the boss then I can see why Ed, keep up the good work Sir. Great comprehensive review of this really great 2022 Kona Electric in the Ultimate trim. The tech' in this vehicle is fantastic, & I can attest to how good the infotainment systems are in Hyundai vehicles because I've owned 3, and I'm currently driving a 2019 Tucson Ultimate, and the navi' as well as the rest of the system works flawlessly! Big fan of Hyundai Ed. Keep up the great work, I'll be watching!

I'm very impressed with the enthusiasm and knowledge of the seller here. You can really see that it's someone who has interest on this topic. Big compliments from my side. When I bought my two EVs here in Germany, I knew more about them than the sellers. They were not very motivated to deal with the topic of EV. Especially such tips, like that you should switch to Neutral every few weeks so that the brakes don't rust, I had to find out all that online. And interesting to see how equipment differs from country to country. Here in Germany 'Prime' is the highest trim and we don't have any LEDs on the inside and the wireless charging box isn't ventilated either. Also, we don't have hand grips in the front. Strange. However a big thumbs up for you and your work.

Remember to turn on SMART recuperation in settings/eco vehicle or so....it auto adjusts all the regen lvls and auto braking for traffic without having the actual smart cruise control enabled. Was a game changer for me and enables true one pedal driving :)

Yep lvl 3 is nice but on auto it will register traffic that suddenly comes into your lane and will autobreak and warn and it switches between all the 3 levels of regen based on the road you are on , the traffic and the state of charge. It is at the same time superb regen in level 3 manual and gives a good relaxed one pedal driving. I noticed that the one button to the right of auto hold was blank in your car. Here in Norway we have the camera button there for always on backup camera...not that I really see why we need that 🙂

No, unfortunately in Canada, it does not. I believe there was an error on done communication though, as I thought it did too. But I don't see it anywhere in the systems configuration.

It's definitely better, but even the Preferred trim with an added subwoofer is going to sound awesome. So if the sound system is your only concern, I'd recommend the lower trim, with aftermarket sub.

@@edsgarage001 Not my main concern, the main ones are the navigation and cruise control. Don't people usually end up using waze or Google maps linked to the screen assuming you can do that. Good video and many improvements from my 2019 model. The three modes for the odometer though are a step backwards. The beauty of the old eco mode was a digital readout and an exact speed reading which you don’t receive with an old style analogue looking odometer in the 2022 Kona.

This is a fantastic vehicle. I bought mine two weeks ago and love it. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and it hit -20 Celsius and although yes the battery does get drained because of the cold as long as you don’t have the HEAT button all of the time you will be fine. I’ve been charging it to 80% using a regular household outlet in my garage and for running around in the city I haven’t had any concerns. This vehicle is absolutely awesome. My only minor complaint is that you have to play with the button to get the temperature that you want. When you press the button that shows the windshield defrost and fans up and down button the AC turns on. If you press it again the AC turns off. Maybe I’m too excited about figuring things out? 😃

Thx for the comment! But you should know, you're actually best to just let the car figure out the temperature. Ignore the heat/AC lights as you have a heat pump that's extremely efficient. Agreed! Hyundai is surprising the industry with some unbelievable products. I'm a fellow ioniq owner, it's been the best car I've ever owned. The ioniq5 looks incredible!

Wish they sold it in GA, very nice car, much nicer than the sister Niro and the Niro is still stuck on 2020.

Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes the 2024 is a completely redesigned and larger version. There's actually KZread videos out already for it, but I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet. No unfortunately it will still only be front wheel drive. The AWD EVs will be reserved for the Ioniq lineup.

I was looking at the ioniq because its the only model they sell in Japan. Yes! Hyundai is back this year in Japan after leaving our market about 10 years ago. Very exited but also disappointed because they only sell two models here, one of them being the ioniq which is why I'm interested in it!!

Thank you for this review. I am waiting rather impatiently in the UK for my Kona Electric Ultimate, probably won’t get it until next year due to manufacturing delays… I’m filling in the time listening to reviews and imagining how my new car will be; your review is by far the most informative one I have seen. I see in other reviews that the down side is often the boot space and rear passenger space, these are not hugely important to me, but the range, safety, reasonably good looks and some great functionality still make this the best options for me in this price bracket. Which car do you feel is it’s closest competitor in the market at the moment?

Thx for the comment! In Canada, the closest competitor has the be the Chevy Bolt. Which I believe is the Vauxhall Bolt there. The Nissan Leaf doesn't have battery temperature management, and it's just all around cheaply made, so I'd avoid that one.

We have the problem of disk rotors corroding with our ICE vehicle simply because we don't drive it alot. I was wondering if spraying the rotors with cooking oil or WD-40 when parked for an extended period of time would help. Mind you only one side of the rotor is easily accessible without crawling under the car so it may be an ineffective measure to take. Maybe those rotors need to be say a nickel iron alloy to prevent the corrosion.

This is an issue that's been around for decades... Ceramic rotors fixes that problem lol.

Strongly considering this one, out in Toronto so unfortunately can't drop by to Chilliwack but definitely going to give it a test. How has your experience with the Hyundai EV's been in the winter? It would be in a garage all the time and sheltered from the elements, but I'm curious how much the cold reduces the battery efficiency.

I've been driving an Ioniq with 200km of average range... I lose about 25 km in the winter. But I'm also in southwest BC, and it doesn't get that cold here. Your mileage may vary of course, but if your daily requirements don't exceed 300km on a very regular basis, you'll definitely be fine with the Kona. You can also setup the vehicle to pre-warm the cabin and battery at set times during the day while still connected to the charger. That way it's ready to go when you leave, and saves much of the range you would normally lose otherwise.

Thx! You simply remote start it, the same way you remote start a gas vehicle. But when you use the remote start on an EV, it'll pre warm or cool the battery and interior. Preconditioning, is just using grid power to bring the battery temperature to an ideal spot. It'll do that automatically when you use the fob. Press the lock button first, then hold the start button until you see the exterior lights flash.

I've looked at the Volt, the Leaf and daydreamed Tesla, but I can't forget how well I was treated by Maple Ridge Hyundai when my motor got the Arkansas flu or I would drive all the way out to the 'Whack' to see you. Hi Ed, I'm getting my Kona 64kwh at the end of February, can I ask what is probably a really stupid question? A lot of commentators say about charging from empty to 80%, is it better to keep the charge to 80%, or charge to the full 100% ? Sorry if it is a stupid question. I Alice, Thx for the comment! Ok, two things: First: If you're at a DC fast charge station, then it's courtesy to stop at 80%. The reason being, is that beyond 80%, the charge rate drops dramatically to protect the battery. So charging from 10-80% takes about a half hour, but then charging from 80% to 100% takes another half hour. So rather then take up a lot of time for only that extra 20%, it's common practice to leave the station at 80% so as to free it up for the next user. Second: This one, in my opinion, is stupid. So, lithium ion batteries like to stay within about 20-80% charge. Beyond those numbers is where the potential for a little degradation takes place. So what EV manufactures do, is they actually have a buffer on both extremes of the battery charge. So when your car says it's at 0% or 100% it's ACTUALLY at about 15% and 90% respectively. So for starters, when you charge to 80% you're really only charging to about 70%... So that's pointless. The other reason I think it's stupid, is if you go through the life of your ownership only ever charging to 80% in order to save the battery... Then you're effectively denying yourself that extra 20% TODAY so that you have it 10-20 years from now. 🤷 I'd rather risk a little degradation! Finally, a lot of people don't understand that these battery's are far more robust then they think. For example, my 2017 Hyundai ioniq, is now nearing 5 years old, and about 100,000km... And it's still 100% state of health, with zero degradation and I ALWAYS charge it to 100%. It's not even liquid cooled! If you live in a hot southern climate, and your goal is to keep the car 15 years.... Sure, charge it to *90%* But otherwise, just charge it to 100% at home, and 80% in public. Please subscribe and share! ☺️

Awesome review! Much better than the 2021 models. I'm sad that the 2022 preferred won't come with the 8 speaker system, but that's okay!

What do you drive now? I think you're best bet is to test drive it if possible. It's not a sports car, but compared to other EVs in it's class (bolt, leave etc..) I'd say it's pretty good. Thx for the comment!

@@francinepaluch7511 my pleasure! I think you'll find the Kona EVs handling "adequate". It's heavy, but the main cause of the weight is literally the lowest part of the car, so that makes up for it with that low center of gravity. Acceleration however, is snappy and instant, thanks to the instant torque of the EV motor. In my opinion, short of an actual sports car, almost every EV is more fun to drive then almost any a ICE vehicle. But that's just my opinion.

Honestly a lot of the road noise people hear, is actually a result of the road noise not being overpowered by engine noise. However, if it's AWD you're after, check out the upcoming Ioniq5. That will have awd.

I read that they aren't that spacious and also the rears seats lack full thigh support. Does the SUV has a auto-dimming IRVM and can 360 deg. camera!! or can a aftermarket 360 deg. camera installed and configurated with the stock infotainment system? Does Kona come along with a wall mounted fast charger (7.2Kw) or a normal 16 Amps charger and the charging time from 0 to 100%. Finally is it worth purchasing the upgraded KONA or go for KIA Niro!! @@rudolfdsilva2844 lots of questions lol -Back seats are fine for 3 kids... 3 small adults or 2 "normal" adults lol. -never really thought the thigh support was bad, but i haven't sat in the back of one for more then about 15 minutes -the ultimate does have auto dimming rear view mirror -no 360 cam system yet, and not really something you can add easily -the Niro might be the better option if regularly putting 3 adults in back -in North America, it comes with a level 1 charger (120v 12amp) Approximate Charging times 0-100%: -Level 1: 50 hours -Level 2 16amp: 17 hours -Level 2 32amp: 9 hours -Level 2 40amp: 8 hours -Level 3 25kw: 2.75 hours -Level 3 50kw: 1.5 hours -Level 3 100+kw: 1 hour

You say that the Hyundai navi updates are free for life but how long do they support a specific model? I kind of thought that the kona looked a bit ugly so I was looking at the ioniq. Do you have a video on the ioniq? Thanks for your videos!

I really like and enjoy the 2022 Kona limited I leased yesterday but didn’t know about the ioniq 5 coming soon. Would I be able to return the kona within the 3 day worry free policy to exchange for the Ioniq 5 even though it hasn’t arrived yet?

No idea. If you leased it, then regulations might allow you to, but it'll depend on local laws. Keep in mind, the Ioniq5 is going to be way more expensive

Great video. What do you recommend for the charger settings to maintain battery life? I've heard charge from 20% to 80%...also 20% to 90% as well.

10% to 90% is plenty safe enough. If you're in a very hot climate, maybe 15 to 85%

@@edsgarage001 Does the car need to be plugged in to heat the car, or does it do it according to the schedule you have setup regardless if it is plugged in or not? Also, does it stop heating/cooling at the time you have set? Eg - just say you don't go into work one day, the car won't keep heating/cooling all day will it?

They're all factory order right now. Put in an order, and your wait will be likely a few months.

Do they come supplied with the spontaneously combusting batteries, like the old model ?

No, that was only the 2019/2020 models that came with batteries that LG made. LG screwed up the battery design, and Hyundai is paying for half of LG's screw up. They're now using sk innovations batteries.

How's the road noise? It is pretty bad for my 1st generation Kona 1.6T Ultimate, especially when driving on highway.

It's about the same as that.. But without the engine noise. They're not really built with road noise sound deadening in mind. But I've been in much much worse vehicles.

Would charging the battery always on fast charge damages the battery?

Great question, It's not recommended to make DC fast charging your primary means of charging. However, it's not at bad as many people would lead you to believe. You could basically accelerate your battery's degradation by fast charging it daily. Fast charging should be reserved for long trips, whereas daily charging really should be done at home on a level two station.

Can you put a trailer hitch on the Kona Electric? I know the gasoline Kona has that as an option but theres no mention of it for the Electric version.

It's possible to install the same hitch, but it requires some minor modification to the plastic covering on the bottom of the vehicle. It's primarily an accessory hitch though, not really for towing

I understand that there is significant range loss, but the EV version of the Kona actually has more horsepower and torque than the gasoline version. Seems like the only reason for it not being able to tow is due to regulation or perhaps because its heavier?

@@makingwithsteve regulation yes, but also liability. But also because the hitch itself is bolted to the unibody, it's not really strong enough to pull more then maybe 700 pounds. I just think Hyundai is protecting themselves by recommending that it not be used for towing. Also, in regards to your comment about the horse power and torque. That's only half the equation. You also need to be able to stop safely 😉 The ioniq5 will be able to tow though

I'm reserve one KONA Preferred today, but do you think Ultimate is worth for 5000$ more ?

Yes, that hasn't changed.

Superb review, extremely knowledgeable. BUT...don't switch to neutral whilst driving. It's not wise, you can't accelerate away should the need arise.

Switching back to drive is as simple as pushing D. But this is also why you should only ever do this when you're not surrounded by any other vehicles. It's no more dangerous then driving a manual transmission during those moments when you're in neutral. 🤷

@@edsgarage001 Being a Brit, I've driven manuals most of my life - I've an electric Kona Ultimate now - and I NEVER put the gearbox in neutral unless I was parked, for the same reason - removing your ability to accelerate is not wise. The rest of your review is superb, easily the most knowledgeable Kona salesman I've ever seen. Impressive, and I learned a few new things about my Kona!

Thank you for the kind words... The procedure of putting the vehicle in neutral to temporarily disable regenerative braking isn't new. It's been the standard practice since the early days of the Nissan leaf. I don't feel that it's dangerous at all, considering it's a literal moment to switch back into drive if needed. Every time you change gear in a manual, you're momentarily in neutral too. It's actually less of a physical action to press a button then it is to move a shifter and release a clutch. Not doing this somewhat regularly means your brakes are going to slowly get worse and worse due to rust buildup. At best, it means fairly regular brake services, which can be costly. At worst it's seized calipers and reduced braking power when you need it.

@@edsgarage001 Google it!! The number of sites saying it's dangerous is massive. If you crash whilst in neutral, you could be prosecuted. It's illegal in 15 US states & in Canada. Your insurer may well not pay up if they find you were in neutral gear. In the UK, you could be fined £1k for driving in neutral. The RAC - "It means you can’t suddenly accelerate out of a sticky situation and you lose engine braking, running the risk of overheating the brakes when going downhill." The AA in New Zealand - "It is considered an unsafe practice to have no engine braking available in any vehicle auto or manual when travelling down hills." Startrescue - "You pick up speed quicker and go faster than you otherwise would. You have less control because you can’t control speed via engine braking - since the engine is not connected to the wheels." Carfromjapan "You should not abruptly shift to that gear when you are driving on a highway at a great speed, except for emergencies. It drastically slows down the car and cuts down many wheel functions, which may cause accidents." Pumptalk.ca "If you are in Neutral and need to suddenly put your foot on the accelerator - maybe to avoid something - you won't have time to put the vehicle back into Drive and it will be too late." Mechanics.stackexchange.com "This is a bad idea for several reasons. First, you run the risk of a runaway car. What is the blue strip in bottom middle of digital instrument cluster mean? I don’t exactly understand consumption. What number do I want to see here. I’m in US so in KWh/ miles Thx

The blue strip is the "instant" or, live view of the consumption as you drive. Average on this vehicle is about 25-28KWh per 100 miles.

@@pkool68 yeah, just leave it on. It protects the battery in sub freezing temps. You will lose bit of range, but it's better for the battery. It does also help to speed up charging as the battery will be kept a bit warmer.

By ultimate, I think he means "Limited" which is the higher end model than the "SEL"

No, I actually don't know of any EVs that do. But honestly, the tire pump and repair kit is way easier. Most tires go flat from nails, not blow outs anyway.

I wonder why car models are released 6 months before their model year?

How long does it take to get the heat working well and the car warm?

Depends on how cold it is, (I know that sounds obvious, but it isn't) If the temperature is above -5°C, then the heat pump actually works pretty fast. You get warm air within about a minute of turning the car on. Plus you can set it to automatically pre-warm the cabin and battery at set times in the mornings so that it uses grid power and not battery power (assuming it's plugged in) If it's below -5°C then it uses a resistive heater to assist the heat pump, and takes a little longer. The battery warming takes longer of course, but speeds up when you start driving. It's awesome to not have to think about remote starting it every morning though, I've got mine to pre-warm/pre-cool every morning at 7:50am. That way, when I leave for work, it's already nice inside the car and the battery is at the prime temperature.

@@jodischollnick9893 for the climate control system, Just keep it on "auto" and set the temperature to 71 or whatever you're comfortable at. Don't crank it to max, because then it won't really work. I've actually got another video that might help. I'll link it for you.

Kia e-Niro in Sweden is killing Kona electric, it's like 10 to 1 in terms of sales or higher, the reason mostly is due to size and material quality of the cabin...

And still no frunk but much useless space in front. But thats the car, the video is really informative, thumbs up. But why is ist 2022 (not 21)?

True, but compare it to what it competes with, (Chevy bolt, Nissan leaf) and they've got no frunk either. The Ioniq5 will have a frunk. There's really not much space in the front though, it's taken up by the motor, single reduction gear box, inverter converter, heat pump, temperature management system, charge management system etc. In Canada and the USA, the redesign started for the 22 model. The 21 is still the old style. Thx for the comment!

LED headlights using reflectors is a major let down IMO, I disagree that they are "very very" good. It also makes it harder to upgrade/retrofit vs the halogen projector version. Most cars have sub par headlights and this sucks

Having driven it at night, I can honestly say they're still very good. Although, I agree that projector would be a little better.

Small correction about the brake peddle using regenerative braking. It uses regenerative braking upto a limit. A good way to notice the difference and measure the difference between brake peddle regeneration and paddle regen , is to try slowing down the car while in eco mode , and notice the amount of km accumulated ( using same speed , distance,etc) Brake peddle only accumulates about 50% the energy of regular regen

The point i was trying to make, is that the brake pedal will use the same amount of regenerative braking as using the highest level set by the paddle, including using the left paddle to come to a complete stop.

You can tell the brake pedal is using full Regen, when you watch the negative kw number in the EV info screen. It maxes out, same amount as using the Regen paddle.

But , I understood it initially as " brake pedal regen is = level 3 regen " I've run multiple tests on a street at a speed of 80kmph to 0 kmph and tried the braking using regen level 3 , and then again the same test using regular brake pedal The display screen in eco mode showed a number of "0.9 km +" range while using regen mode but only about "0.5 km" while using brake pedal My understanding is that ,the brake pedal doesn't waste the energy like ICE cars..but it's more for safety and stopping, and less about regen. Would that be an accurate understanding? Or have I misunderstood?

But according to the CEO of Hyundai himself, the way English speaking people should say it, is "Hyundai like Sunday" As a matter of fact, if you listen to the correct Korean pronunciation, it sounds very much like "Sunday" with a bit more emphasis on the H sound then the way I say it.

For cargo capacity, The Bolt has 16.9 cubic feet. The Kona has 19.2 The Bolt has a bit more back seat space, but the Kona is still quite a bit more comfortable.
