    Unfortunately that caused them a lot but they just can't do it due to the way the control tracking worked on the original PSVR. The need for the adapter isn’t Sony’s fault though. The PSVR2 is using the VirtualLink standard that was completely abandoned by graphics cards manufacturers. I think the only graphics cards that actually had the virtual link USB-C port were RTX 2000 series cards. So maybe the PSVR2 will work without an adapter if you still have one of those cards and once they release the Windows drivers.

    I'm actually very interested in it, but I'm not sure that this will be something that will drastically increase the PSVR2 sales. I currently own the PSVR2 and Meta Quest 2 and would like to see how different the games will look. Nevertheless, I'm still baffled at the fact that we only have Gran Turismo 7 as the only "real" racing game for PSVR2.

    I got the PSVR2 and I got a lot of use out of it for Gran Turismo 7, played through RE Vilage which was great, always love a bit of Rez, but yeah the selection of games is limited and doesn't seem to be growing - If Sony aren't going to make new WipEout games (RIP Psygnosis) they could at least port the Omega Collection to PSVR2 (or PC, I have a 240Hz OLED monitor and WipEout OC would be amazing at that framerate with that level of motion clarity). I do have a fairly powerful PC and no PC VR headset though, so this fifty quid box is fantastic for me, it pays some form of dividend in respect of my investing in the PSVR2 which wasn't quite made out with the PSVR2 game selection. I'm not sure it'll boost sales numbers without some reason to get a PS5 VR headset that can work on PC instead of justgetting a cheaper VR headset for PC.

    The whole ps5 generation has been lackluster at best. Most of the games on ps5 are on ps4. There is no real "system seller" on the ps5. I don't think PSVR 2 is ever going to get the public support or the games to support buying one. Sony really has been slack on marketing for it. Is not a new hardware that they need(besides they have PS5 Pro coming), is more games they need. The hardware works fine. We have to take into account though that even PS4 wasn't rich until after the first 2 and a half years and this time everything is delayed because the chip shortage made it hard to sell the system the first two something years so they had to also make PS4 version of the games since most people couldn't get a PS5 and still were on PS4.

    Team Asobi wanted to get the first full length AstroBot game out to the masses. VR only would have held it back, and to make it a hybrid title, that worked, at it's best, in both modes, was probably too much of an ask for the small team. There is certainly always the chance we will see something down the line released for AstroBot. Remember how Sony has done this with WipEout Omega, Gran Turismo 6, Gran Turismo 7, and they funded Capcom to release PSVR modes, after the fact on, ResEvil7, and ResEvil8. Team Asobi definitely has the chops to do it, probably more than most VR developers. Perhaps they are also going to work the previous Astro Bot Rescue Mission into it. Now that would be a great surprise to see.

    Eye tracking is essential for Eye Tracked Foveated Rendering. Also, it could be VERY usefull for apps and experiences, so if you're porting it to use on PC that's a big downside or missed opportunity. Also it's one feature that's there, so it become just like dead meat inside the hardware ? Not fun. Lack of HDR is also a bummer. Man, i can swear someone at the earlier stages of creating the PSVR2 probably suggested to make it easier to work from a single USB-C cable, and it works on PS5, so what is the technical limitation to not work the same on a PC ? I can't understand.

  • @homernoy

    @homernoy

    Foveated Rendering is only useful with low/mid range hardware. If you have a powerful PC you can render the entire screen/s at hi-rez up to 144Hz (Valve Index) without issue. Also, there are no PCVR games that support HDR at this point, but if it becomes common in the future, the PSVR2 will be capable of displaying HDR content with a driver or firmware update.

    Backwards compatibility would be difficult. There would have to be some kind of transition later that takes the inside out tracking of the VR2 and turn it into outside in visual camera and motion inputs that a PSVR one game can understand. It's probably not impossible but the development time to make such a feature might not be worth it. It's better for devs to change their game which Sony surely has a way to work from that direction easier already and publish an upgraded build. Charging people for the upgrade is then up to the publishers. Some have chosen to make it free some have not.

    It would be nice, but it's not likely ever going to happen. They can patch that in later. Team Asobi is a small group of devs. They wanted to likely have the first major Astro Bot PS5 game to be as polished as possible, and for the masses before moving onto any other projects. As with Gran Turismo 6, 7,WipEout Omega, RE7, RE8, Ace Combat 7, RE4, they could add this on as a free update. Not only that, but perhaps they could even work the remaster of Rescue Mission in as well. Team Asobi does do VR extremely well. I don't think Sony would let that go to waste. Despite what people say, Sony has not given up on the PSVR 2. They've poured some major money into it, and plan on it being a platform for the long run.

    This will NOT save PS VR 2, this PC adapter is being done so when Sony finally drops official support of the PS VR 2 then they can rationalize the situation with how they are allowing PS VR 2 users access to the Steam VR library (which is a bunch of B.S for a couple of reasons, especially since a PC capable of playing modern VR isn't cheap). This is coming from a person who paid $300 for a USED PS VR 2 in excellent condition (it had only been used twice by the previous owner) when it was still going for $600 new (and I am FULLY aware that PS VR 2 sales are in the toilet and official support will probably end sometime next year, but I wanted one anyway since I really like VR and the current games it has are pretty fun. However, the writing is on the wall that PS VR 2 is NOT doing well. Sony halted production of PS VR 2 units since it's NOT selling and they literally have over 1 million units sitting in a warehouse all unsold, physical copies of the newer games like Vertigo 2, which is a really excellent game, are selling horribly, and I strongly doubt digital sales on the Playstation store are doing much better, and there are very few new releases coming soon. The new Metro VR game and Behemoth are the only two notable upcoming games and the few other upcoming releases are from indie developers with low budgets and that's it). So... What can save PS VR 2? 1) Backwards compatibility of some sort (at least pick a good number of PS VR 1 games to upgrade to PS VR 2). 2) More PS VR 2 exclusives (only Horizon Call of the Mountain, Switchback and one other game are exclusives and that's it and those games came out during the launch. Granted, Resident Evil 4 Remake's VR mode and Gran Turismo 7's VR mode are exclusive to the PS VR 2, but that was a while ago and the flat screen versions of those games are available. PS VR 2 needs more games that are exclusive to itself). Also, 3) OPTIONAL VR modes for the upcoming Astro Bot game and Grand Theft Auto 6 (a VR mode EXCLUSIVE to PS VR 2 of Grand Theft Auto 6 would be a huge deal if done correctly. Add normal movement and an optional teleport movement for motion sickness sensitive gamers and it will be amazing). But... I don't think any of this is happening. I'm going back to playing Vertigo 2 and Crossfire Sierra Squad on PS VR 2 now (those are really fun games). I'm just going to enjoy PS VR 2 for what it is (it's fun, even though the writing is on the wall that it will probably be officially dead by late 2025. I can see the final set of upcoming official PS VR 2 games releasing next year).

    @@tcsutton9121 It's a bad situation for many entertainment ventures, in general. Just look at movie theaters. They are shutting down, left and right! People are having trouble affording food and other necessities, in a near recession, so things like VR, are not high up on the list of things to buy. Not to mention that the PS5 was hard for many people to get a hold of until about last year. The PSVR 2 has only been sold, at retailers, for about one year now. Let's give it a chance before we count it out. The PSVR 1 wasn't considered a "huge success", but it made Sony, and 3rd party publishers, money. Sony is invested in VR for the long run. PSVR2 hardware is among the very best headsets you can get, and it's SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than competing high end PC headsets (even with a $60 adapter being accounted for). The thing is higher resolution than the Valve Index, and that kit runs $1,000 before tax/shipping. Making this compatible with PC will get a whole new group of users interested in the headset -hell, I'm one of them, the announcement finally got me to bite the bullet and order one, because it's a much better value knowing that it will support both platforms. Cross pollination is a win. If more people are buying the hardware, that may encourage PC -only users to consider a PS5 down the road ("because I've already got this headset that would work with it"), and more PSVR2 headsets floating around in consumers' hands will encourage devs to port more games to the platform. Developing the adapter and software drivers to support all this, plus manufacturing etc, isn't cheap. If Sony was just trying to dump off the rest of their units, they'd just drop the thing like they did with the Vita and the PSP. It remains to be seen how successful this will be, it could be too little too late, but trying to look at this from the perspective of people who already own the system is absolutely dumb -this is intended to drive MORE people to buy the hardware, because that's the only way you're going to drum up interest from devs and publishers. If you want more games on the hardware you bought, then you want Sony to encourage as many users as possible to buy that same hardware.

    Sony getting very greedy trying to sell a $60 adapter for dead tech and then unless it starts selling well they stop any support for it. Looks like a last ditch effort to try and sell the large amount of stock they have left at full retail price.

  • @AceFondu

    It's actually a heck of a deal if you understand the tech behind it. Basically, the PSVR2 uses VirtuaLink which NVIDIA stopped supporting after the 20 series cards. This adapter is really needed since most PC's won't have a native support for it. There was another company that offered a similar commercial adapter and it was like $200+, so again, this is a really good deal.

    "Last ditch effort" haha.. don't believe all of the KZread videos you see. The PSVR 2 has only been sold at retailers for ONE year. VR is not an easy sell. People who haven't tried VR have no idea what their missing, and people who know VR only from the PSVR 1, don't realize how much better this experience really is. Amazon has been selling one to two thousand PSVR 2 units, each month, which isn't amazing, but it's certainly not horrible for an expensive accessory for the PS5. I am looking forward to seeing how many they've sold in June, with the -$100 price drop. Quite a lot more, I bet. Also, to anyone who says "There just aren't any games for the PSVR 2".. take a look for yourself. There are 300+ games out now, many on sale. With over 1,000 more in development. Do yourself a favor and don't count something out just because the current economy is bad.

  • @SIPEROTH

    @SIPEROTH

    Yes you are. You are missing that Facebook is actually losing billions on those headsets and their VR projects while Sony doesn't want and doesn't even have the ability to do so. Second the PSVR2 has a few unique tech things of it's own like OLED screen lenses and eye tracking etc that the Quest doesn't have. So each have their features but mostly is because Facebook is willing to give it below cost just to grow the VR market. Anyway now that is on discount the PSVR2 isn't that bad of a deal since it comes with the controllers etc unlike the first PSVR that many bought because it was cheap at $300 but in the end you needed at least 100-150 for the move controllers which made the price quite similar to the current PSVR2.

    PSVR2 just like every other VR headset is supported by 3rd party devs. I don't know why that is so hard for people to understand. It's not dead, it doesn't need to be saved. There are plenty of great games on it. If you don't like it then it is definitely a you problem. For me the RE games alone were worth the purchase. Look at PS5 and Xbox, name a single system seller. Spider-Man 2? Not a system seller for me, but RE4 in VR, that's a system seller for me. As for the breakout box, it requires 12v so theres an included power brick, hence the barrel jack.

So I payed 600 € for enjoying Call of the Mountain - that was price heavy. No blockbuster released within the last 12 months, from my point of view the VR 2 is already dead. Sony is responsible to create some blockbusters for that system and they didn't, at the same time I am really disappointed about the PS5. That is not the issue. The issue is that Sony neglected promoting it, the current discounted price is what it need to make people buy and not that $600(hard to convince a PS5 owner that payed 500 for his console to pay more than the PS5 itself to play some VR games) and that they didn't put out any great and impressive first party title that will make people want it just to play that game. GT7 is a great use of it and looks impressive but most people aren't into racing games. Racing games have a specific audience. Sony needs a half Life Alyx type of game for their VR that will advertise their system but they seem reluctant to put the money and effort behind it. They have some great VR games and some decent ones etc but they are missing that truly amazing system seller type of title.

    I really don't think the PSVR 2 "needs saving". And to say there aren't many games to play is a little naive. There are over 300 games available.. The key word here being "GAMES". The Meta is a Facebook product, where as the PSVR 2 is a PlayStation 5 accessory to play games. Not to mention, many of the Meta games are also playable on the PSVR 2, (Beat Saber, included), and do look much better with HDR, and OLED. The contrast and quality of visuals are excellent for the price. For $100 less now, I think many people are going to give it a try. VR is a hard sell for any system. People who haven't tried it for themselves just don't know how immersive of an experience it and truly be. I also see this PC support a a simple bonus. I still feel that the PSVR 2 is targeted to be for PS5 owners. I also have a feeling that Team Asobi will bring out a patch for AtroBot, to add on a VR component. Not only that. but maybe they will integrate Rescue Mission in there as well, as it's still the #1 game that all PSVR 2 owners want to see playable on their HMD.
