I don’t regret selling my upright bass

Музыка

In this video, I share why I sold my upright bass and don't regret it. This is a short video about the importance of letting go of the things we don't use, especially instruments.

First off, just wanted to say that your content is such a breath of fresh air. Found your channel a few months ago (your dream bass build video) and I've been hooked ever since. Not much fluff on this channel - just straightforward, honest, useful, insightful, and tasteful content. No click bait. No fake excitement. No obnoxious stunts. Your bass tone is sweet too, like the perfect sweetspot in every way. Anyway. I'll stop gushing now and go sell my upright and gift away my unused 5er. This honestly was the push I was looking for. Blessings on ya man! Keep up the quality channel!

This is crazy how relevant this video is for me. After a couple of year long fling with the double bass I simply had to admit to myself that my DB ended up gathering dust in the corner of the room and it's time to let someone else realise it's full potential. What a wonderful and beautiful instrument it was, even if not right for me. It was objectively the right call to sell it, but on an emotional level I still miss it! Thanks for this video and for other comments here, nice to see others have similar dilemmas.

The more you let go, the more you receive. Not necessary from the same source. You just have to keep the wheel spinning. The challenge is that the society we live in constantly teaches and reinforces a “buy as much as you can” behaviour. It’s taught in kindergarten. So we have to make a conscious effort to change it. The good news is that that can inspire others to do the same. And that’s why vídeos like this one are so important and inspiring. Thank you for posting this and congrats!

I'm selling two guitars and a bass for the same reason. If you are not a collector once you don't use a tool anymore you should let it go and focus on what you enjoy more.

I was in a jazz big band on electric, and I decided that maybe upright could be of use to me. WRONG dead wrong. I learned some basic plucking and bowing technique and got some basic intonation down. It was fun (and I kind of felt like a badass ngl) to play and walk on, but transporting it was just a nightmare. For what you put into it, the thing is so painful to carry through hallways, doors, or general areas in buildings. Theres a reason the world went electric, and I've stuck to my P bass since.

I sold my shortscale last week, since I got my P=bass I was not playing it at all. I also sold my first guitar, a spanish acoustic that I had not used in over 5 years... it is difficult to sell for me, but I decided to let those instruments go to people that will play them.

This is exactly why I sold my upright bass. I'm a good bass guitarist and a bad upright bassist. Specialize. Get really good at one thing. Don't horde something someone else can love. A jazz musician from New Orleans bought it. OORAH!

Spot on, Phil! I love guitars and basses and all of the associated paraphernalia - the look, the whole iconography, the music, the stories & histories of the pioneer makers and players. I love having instruments in the house. BUT: I am a truly incompetent guitarist and as such, I know I cannot really justify having some of the instruments I have. I love them all but I cannot do them adequate justice. Case in point: a pre-loved 2002 PRS Singlecut I bought myself for my 40th birthday. It is undeniably, jaw-droppingly, gorgeous. Even Mrs Incompetent Guitarist thinks so. But it’s my 60th birthday in a few days’ time. I’ve been custodian of this beauty for 20 years, and I feel I cannot hold onto it any longer. It needs someone else to love it and play it, so I’m selling it, in the hope it finds that player who can give its proper, raucous purpose. A clean slate for us both ... Although if a Gretsch G6118T Players Edition happens to walk by and flirt a little, I reserve the right to have all of the above moralising immediately declared null and void as I plan our hasty elopement ...

i had a similar experience with a massive tube amp that i loved to bits, but due to the logistics of gigging it become almost impossible to get to shows, i said id never sell it and just sat around in my practice space, then later in my house. In the end i traded it with someone for a bass that i have already got more use out of then the head ever did (and i arguably got the better deal with no cash trading hands) so as hard it was to let go in the moment, it was for the best. hope your experience is as rewarding in the end my dude, thanks for sharing 👊🏻👊🏻

Thank you. I can relate. At 67 w/ arthritic hand, back, and shoulders my beautiful upright never leaves my house...my electrics do. More and more often it's my light fretless or my ss jmj mustang. My 65 P stays in my studio.

As a former saxophonist turned bass player, I still had two saxophones sitting in the closet. One tenor, one soprano, both from the same brand, in the same gorgeous honey gold lacquer. That soprano was truly a little jewel, played wonderfully and looked like a work of art but... I wasn't playing it anymore and I couldn't see myself playing it any time in the future since the soprano requires diligence to master and I've always been a better tenor sax player. So this summer I finally decided to sell it to a student of someone I used to be in an orchestra with. Part of the money went into a brand spanking new Sire D5. I haven't missed that soprano since, the new owner puts good use to it AND I'm over the moon with my awesome new single coil P-bass. Win-win.

I recently sold my 2003 musicman and a 2004 p bass. I didn’t bond with the basses I tired to really use them in the worst way. But I really like the way they felt I made the hard decision to let them go and replace them with one good bass. Definitely happier now. I currently have a 2004 am dlx p bass a 2020 am pro II p bass a 5 string p bass and my newest bass a pawn shop mustang bass with a wide range humbucker. I got the idea from you trying out that Gibson bass. And had me thinking about music from the 80-90’s where a player would get what they can afford and make it work this bass is definitely on that kinda level. Different but original

Yup. Decades ago I tried (for the second time) to learn guitar. I got a really nice Fender Heartfield at Sam Ash in NYC in the 1990s. But I never really vibed with guitar. (I *really* like bass.) So the Heartfield is on Reverb, looking for a new home.

I've been playing bass for 25 years (ish). I bought an upright in 2018. I've not touched my 3 electric basses. I doubt I ever will. If I went to a band gig I wouldn't even bring them. One bass I've had since day one. I always wanted to be an upright player, that was my dream, and never really enjoyed playing bass until I got an upright. I was playing in a band at the time and they said I played better on upright and never to bring back my electrics. I've not touched them since and that was 2018. I play all the time now, though before I often went months without touching the instrument. So, I got my instrument. I have considered selling my basses, but they're old and won't get any money outside of $20. I've thought about keeping my original, and dumping the other two which were just cheapo basses.

True words, maybe no easy decision but it's a 100 percent right decision, a wonderfully crafted piece will thus be used again for what it was made and you never know what songs or artists may be created or developed with the help of your free choice. I have four extremely dear basses and a Martin acoustic bass, they are all I need and I also wouldn't give any of them away for the rest of my life

I knew I wasn't going to like this video and I was right. I love my upright bass but I, too, can't really play it like it should be played. It has a long history before me and I should let it continue that history after me. But I really do hate the thought of giving it up. Like, literally tearing up at the thought. I should still do it.

Great vid I wanted an upright so I could be mediocre 😅😅 Never owned a true upright And fully respect those Real Players. I did want one for fun but didn't want all the TLC of ownership After MUCH research I ended up buying an electric upright (Azola BugBass) It sounds to To me It sounds as good as any miced up/piezo/amped acoustic Upright. It's been played by Many better than mediocre Jazz and Bluegrass player. They aren't selling their 5/10/15 k REAL uprights but it's good enough for live playing It's a niche tool which fits and might give you some upright time and tone without all the money and maintenance?? One day I am also gonna experiment with. Semi-hollow fretless with piezo to see how close that gets Again, not the same as the real thing but maybe close enough for "our" whimsy? Good luck
