"I don't know what to do, I'm going to put it down." Airplane crash

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Date: June 7, 2024.
Location: near Arvada, CO
The aircraft Beechcraft 35 Bonanza (N150WR) departed Centennial Airport (KAPA) heading to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (KBJC). About 6.5 miles south of the destination, the aircraft reported their oil light was illuminated and the engine was losing power. Shortly after, the pilot advised there were 4 souls on board with 80 gallons of fuel. Shortly after, the pilot reported to tower they would need to ditch the aircraft and was looking for a safe space to land. The aircraft ended up landing in a greenbelt area in a residential neighborhood and caught fire in a home's driveway.

    Thoughts with family. He was obviously doing all he could do. RIP all.. We may all think we know how we'd respond in these situations, but when it's real, it's real. We should use these accidents to remind ourselves how quickly things can change. Maintenance verification/checklists and additional emergency training, possibly. Even then.. very sad.

    Back in the early days of flight, every airmail pilot kept a personal notebook, noting every emergency landing spot, roads, pastures, unmarked airstrips ect. Even the nearest telephone. Maybe they need to go back to that.

    Many vids here to plan your trip as in plan where you are going to go when the engine quits soon after takeoff. Yes it isn't always taught, me armchair pilot, it seems that flight instruction is variable. Search here for TN Flygirl and how her instructors passed her when they should have grounded her. Having said that, had a neighbor once, engine quits, hubby finds a nice field but getting dark, caught a powerline he didn't see. She was pulled out on fire. He died. Years in the hospital.

    I’m a pilot out of BJC and live in NW Denver. I heard this guy flying overhead and my roommate and I remarked that it sounded like it was flying low. I chalked up any sounds to “oh, well it’s a bonanza, that’s probably why it sounds different.” By the time I went outside to look, my line of sight was blocked by the house to my north. Not really any good places to put it down except the golf course east of Sheridan.

    I saw this fire or at least the smoke well at work I did not realize what it was until just now seeing where it is on the map It was a lot of smoke for such a small aircraft but I guess it did have a lot of fuel on board. also I am surprised he did not make an attempt to land on or near I 76 since there is a lot of open space around it and it is a pretty open Highway with minimal traffic a fair amount of the time But it's not for me to judge

    Because it looks like he lost power over Wheat Ridge. At that point Jeffco (Rocky Mountain Metro) is closer than trying to turn back to Centennial, not to mention the altitude he would've bled off making a 180. Another factor is there's almost NOWHERE between Wheat Ridge and Centennial that isn't a residential area, but there's quite a lot of open space up on the northwest side of the metro area - his odds of finding some place open to ditch were much better by flying towards RMM. I don't see a bad decision in this case. It looks like that V35 went from a 'good' airplane to a flying brick in a hurry, and unfortunately the pilot couldn't find a better place to put it down.

    @iadcrjca, pilot knew the closest airport and direction but wasn't going to make it. Turning back right after take-off would have bled off too much energy and altitude. There's only so much potential energy onboard once the engine stops. In this case he couldn't find a suitable landing spot or road. You have to remember that this is unfolding in just a minute or two in the cockpit and he's descending due to the laws of physics. He can trade altitude for airspeed but can't gain both. Sad situation.

    The pilot had a engine failure thats not their fault ? Theh were hurt but survived. The accident has been analyzed by experienced pilots and the pilot did the only thing they could do. Driving is still way more of a risk. It doesnt matter if you are amateur or pro planes dont discriminate and tons of pro's have died during emergency that were much more easy to handle.

    Two things come to mind besides the anger, frustration, sadness and disappointment I feel whenever I happen on an aircraft crash vid.. for starters put a goddamned parachute on your plane and don't tell me it isn't possible to make gas tanks and shut off valves explosion proof or retardant. What about wrapping the gas tank in cellophane and then a fireproof bag? Like others below.. I also didn't like the reaction of the control tower. It's not so much WHAT the control tower says.. it's HOW he says it like asking someone to pass the salt. Nonchalant, detached, removed the reality of the situation.

  • @Frankie2751

    @Frankie2751

    15 күн бұрын

    Ok so multiple things here. The gas tanks are inside the wings. AVGas is very corrosive and will dissolve through that material and then you’ll have those contaminants going into the engine and causing more issues. You can have a parachute on board but it’s not the best. These type of aircrafts don’t have cargo doors in the back for people to jump off. They have to open the side door like a car and try to not slip off the wing and pray they don’t hit the tail of the plane. Plus opening the door is the worst thing you can do in this situation because we’re trained if we lose an engine pitch for a glide speed. Opening the door will cause more drag and have you lose more speed quickly and less time to react. The pilot did the best he did with the little time he had.

  • @wlewis8336

    @wlewis8336

    @@Frankie2751 Thanks for the reply. What I meant is that a ballistic parachute like those used on the Cirrus and other light aircraft (which have already saved over a hundred lives) would have drastically improved the odds of surviving this crash. If it were up to me all GA aircraft would have parachutes - no exceptions - unless the structure of the aircraft itself could not sustain the G forces a chute would incur. As far as making the gas tanks rupture proof I'm convinced it's possible to do so despite the corrosive nature of avgas. Yes I'm aware the gas tanks are in the wings. Then also, from what I gather the aircraft was at 1500 ft which allows for so very little time (literally seconds) to make any decision at all - never mind a rational decision.

    @@wlewis8336 It's not that simple. Airplane modifications are highly regulated, and the legal hurdles can take years and cost insane amounts of money. You cannot just throw a ballistic chute on any airplane. The Cirrus was designed that way from the beginning. A better alternative is to avoid flying over cities in single-engine aircraft, ask yourself, "what would I do if I lost an engine right now?" throughout the flight, and be meticulous on maintenance with no corners cut.

  • @wlewis8336

    @@OneTequilaTwoTequila I agree entirely.. when in flight ask thyself can I land here if the engine quits, This is not possible over certain cities or flying over certain glacier's nonetheless, any airplane I get ie; the Bear hawk kit.. is getting a ballistic chute put in it and modified accordingly.

  • @Leo-fk9ch

    @Leo-fk9ch

    A ballistic parachute is not an option on any Beech Bonanza, 33-36 due to the internal structure and framework. This is also the case for several aircraft. The weight addition to accommodate the ballistic chute would be prohibitive. In flight, it is impossible to open the door of a bonanza, or many other airplanes due to the forces of wind as the airplane flies at 80+ mph. Try it in your car, you’ll understand. That’s why aircraft designed for jumpers have the door removed as in Cessna 180 - 200 series. Ultimately it is up to the pilot in command to decide the level of emergency and ACT. Knowing exactly where you are, especially now with inexpensive and capable mapping avionics , an IPad with Garmin moving map coupled to the Transponder’s ADSB is a perfect example. I’ve been flying for 35+ years, instructing for two decades. I large part of my instruction for students, and seasoned pilots seeking annuals, is to rehearse over and over emergency procedures and quickly establishing a plan. The first of which is to declare an emergency, make the mayday call. Dropping oil pressure is an emergency, and it deserves a mayday call. This immediately amps up the controllers responses and assistance, both in clearing airspace for options and in providing options to safely land.
