"I Didn't Give A Sh*t, The More F***ed Up I Was, The More Famous I Became"

It's Monday! Yay! It's longform discussion day, tangental tales and an attempt to dissect what the music industry is all about. Today we're talking about how on earth I became famous and made it as rockstar in the fickle world of show business. What was it about my life that cracked the code? Is there a recipe all of us can follow? Tell me what you think after watching this, what was my secret to success? Please get involved in the comment section, we read them and appreciate all your input especially on these longer episodes.
Today features my producer Jenny May Finn once again!

This is one of the only long format shows of which I watch every second. This IS balance. The Yin & Yang. I'm also a complete unknown music writer who only writes music as weekly therapy for dealing with the mad world. 23 years of warning about NOW and still going strong. :) I LOVE you 2 together. B4 this show I had no idea about your band but now I absolutely love it. What an odd 20+ year trajectory your music took to finally get to my ears. -an AwesomeTexan
Very excited to hear you are talking with Dan next time. That WILL be an excellent episode.

Wow! There's a lot to unpack in this one. My opinion of you Justin has evolved quite considerably over the years. I have gone from hero worship back in the early days of The Darkness fame when I credited you with single handedly resurrecting from the dead the music I loved and making it popular and relevant again, to being disappointed when everything imploded, and most recently watching your KZread videos and thinking you seemed very down to earth and a nice guy. This one surprised me though, and I found it interesting that you disagreed with Jenny's synopsis of certain situations that I felt she had hit the nail right on the head. The most interesting aspect for me was the discussions around the on stage vs off stage persona and at times it felt very reminiscent of what I experienced with my (late) ex-husband who was also a professional rock musician as a long term member of a British classic rock band. I particularly related to the part where you showed indignation at the prospect of having to sort things out that might have gone wrong at home when you returned from tour! The nuts and bolts of life seemed to be something that he avoided at all costs and I just picked up that same vibe from that comment! I do personally think that there's a huge difference between an on stage and off stage persona. On stage is what you do, it's a performance, not who you are as a person. The best example I can think of is David Bowie and all the personas he created, but at home Iman is quoted as saying he was just David Jones. You also have a larger than life stage presence, very entertaining and a massive part of the enjoyment of the live show. I totally understand for weeks you will have played the on stage character at shows, in meet and greets, with journalists and it must be difficult to switch off, and maybe it's just easier to continue to be that person? Or perhaps it's difficult to differentiate between the two now as you have been in the spotlight for 20 years? Or potentially you might subconsciously think the off stage persona isn't interesting, fun or entertaining enough? (only a theory) I do find it all very fascinating... Just wanted to share my thoughts. Oh, and I also wanted to share an anecdote with you from around 2005 or 2006. I flew out to the States to join my husband on tour for a couple of weeks. The previous occupants of the tour bus they were on had been The Darkness! Knowing I was a fan, my husband asked the tour bus driver out of curiousity which bunk had been yours. His answer was "None of them. He didn't sleep! 😂

Ohhh Helen, I'll bet you've got some VERY entertaining stories to share of your doubtless countless experiences in the rollicking world of rock! (And you must be a looker, rock dudes always have the hottest ladies--well, except John Lennon). Here's hoping when you said 'late' you were referring to your marital status & not the passing of your man. If not you have my condolences.

Oh and to put what you guys were talking about - how to be in life as a musician successful or otherwise - into one word - humble. Yes be as extroverted or introverted, crazy, zany, rambunctious as you want to be, but always have some humility, THAT is the key in my opinion and it is something I think is lacking with a LOT of people these days.

Justin is one of those “Brilliant” people. I hope he recognizes it. Seriously! I Love the 2nd intro as well lol. Justin’s breathy vocal sounded so beautiful🥰 I see Justin as very confident onstage and rightly so!I can tell that he absolutely loves it! Of course he’s going to feel and act different onstage as opposed to just sitting around chatting or when living every other mundane piece of daily life. I think it’s a feeling, combined with great talent. His voice is Amazing and so beautiful!! Annnnd, that stance with the microphone that Jenny May demonstrated Justin...keep doing it!!💓💓💓👍🏻
The idea of Jenny watching someone sleep and thinking "you ain't shit" is killing me atm

As always, I enjoy the candidness of these convos
This was a great interview, chilled, organic and Justin you can sing! OMG! Listening back and hating your voice, as you said, is the critic in you. But you have an amazing voice.
I am an extroverted introvert, and I had to develop a similar “acting” approach to life back in school. The person I was out in public was sort of put on. You shake hands, look people in the eye, and you proceed with whatever task with an air of confidence that was often, but not always, put on. Life just moved forward with a little more ease.

13:56 I just finished re-reading a biography of van Gogh and this could have been an exact summary of his life. Fascinating insight. Love this show. I do think the hard work is the key part that causes the talent to have a platform. Even when you look at, say, Extreme's new videos, you can see that hard work extends into their physical health.
This was a brilliant episode going into the Human complexity of it all! Loved it.
talent, hard work, luck, hard work and also hard work! Not to mention not trying to copy everything else that was popular... Love your work!

This was a great interview well done
I randomly stumbled upon these podcasts earlier today and love them! 🎸
Great video Justin, I must admit I was never a fan of the Darkness in that Ive never bought an album or seen you live but I have always respected what you did and the way you did it, Jools Holland springs to mind and think your a thoroughly nice nice chap from one of the most beautiful parts of the country, I myself am from Norfolk. Personally I would be interested to hear about the Rock and Roll excesses and adventures you got up to, your craziest stories about LA and the mean streets of Lowestoft, I know its a very base question, but I do love a tale of Rock 'N' Roll debauchery. All the best Respect. Ben.
Their friendship is so genuine
Pretty please keep making these long form videos. Always such a bright spot in my day.
Jenny is a wonderful foil for you Justin. Thank you for opening up on your journey. 🤘

Oh Justin, go back on the Chantix! I want you around for a long time!
I like that she is like a therapist that feeds you short keywords that moves your thought process forward. Picking your brain bit for bit. ;) And at the same time we can also see into her mind. It's beautiful! Great episod!
Thank you both, this was really interesting. I hope you can quit smoking though, it's just so bad for your health, not just your voice. In all the things you have done to take control of your life, this one seems to almost be the toughest. I hope you succeed in quitting. Looking forward to you speaking with Dan.
Love this. You two are great.

Oh boy, that bit about perfectionism hit hard. I have been tinkering with some music for a whole year, and have been afraid to let it out into the world knowing it could be better, and Jenny saying ‘Just release it’ into the camera was the shove I needed. I’m going to release it right away. Once I’ve got the cover image right...and maybe reduced the low end a bit in the mix...and chosen the perfect release date...DAMN YOU, PERFECTIONISM

@@CJ-oi7zm Yes I did! It was my first attempt recording and mixing from home, and even after all that tinkering the production still sounds beyond awful. But this JHRA episode made me realise it was better just to release, learn from my (many) mistakes, and move on to the next project. Well this was nice ❤
I love these long, Monday morning offerings. (I can’t contribute anything useful today, though I do have a lot of thoughts on the subjects discussed, and those in the description.)
Paused this, as Justin said his voice doesn’t move him - went for a walk and listened to his cover of This Town Ain’t Big Enough, and I swear the rock vocal performance to end all rock vocal performances made me feel like a Viking! What a record that is!
I think it would be cool & possibly funny if Justin interviewed Frankie from The Darkness. Could you do maybe a series of interviews of children of famous artists? For example, Rufus, are there any pressure or expectations whilst living under the shadow of his famous dad. Maybe try & get interviews from other children of famous artists such as, Duncan Jones (Bowie’s son), maybe one of the McCartney children, or even Julian Lennon. You could ask him about THAT scene in Yesterday & how he felt about the scene.

So long- best song on the album imo, great lyrics. Plenty of Jenny May wisdom on this one, brilliant guys. JM is the best.
The Last Dinner Party just got picked up by Hozier to open his European shows. They’re a band that’s focused on playing gigs for the last 18-24 months and building a “buzz” around that. It seems to be working. They’re brilliant!
Love your producers look and style today ❤! So fashionable 😍
i love her!! this was a very enjoyable podcast even though i have zero interest in being a frontman but i figured with your excellent words of wisdom maybe i could translate that into my great passion. philosophy, which i feel is hand-in-hand w/ music. . ive been insistent on remaining a philosopher queen my whole life... how do you make it in the philosopher queen industry? lol. just a rib. i took away a lot of great suggestions about following your dreams. Thank you both, im a new subscriber and i thoroughly appreciate everyone who makes this podcast possible. ♡jenn
Omg my voice teacher put me on to your music and I’m in love. I’m learning I Believe In A Thing Called Love. Not easy but I’m having so much fun learning. Idk if you’ve made videos on songwriting but I would like to learn more about that.
FairPlay justin in drag works !!
💯% agree with Justin’s philosophy of “burning bright instead of burning out.” I think that music fans show up for the so called self destructive behavior that drives musicians to achieve their goals. Peter Steele sang in World Coming Down “It’s better to burn, quickly and bright than slowly and dull without a fight.” Love the podcast, especially the lengthy ones. 👍🏻
I always enjoy this Monday evening therapy session, enjoyable, and thought provoking stuff as always.
I remember going upstairs at Morlings way back to get some strings and Mr Morling himself was there. He served me and remarked, Justin Hawkins was in, youve just missed him. I asked what he was like, to simply be told with a smile "he is like every customer....extremely valued". Nice exchange. The shop is long gone, but as a town, we go.
Brilliant!
I don't have curiosity about other people either. Justin you've had a positive influence on people and their lives. You bring joy. I'd shake your hand. In my case, my son loves the darkness too. He was thrilled when you talked to him from the stage in Orlando last year. Telling someone to F off now and then is normal. I appreciate that. I think you're totally approachable.
Thought I'd watch and maybe skip through a bit, but watched intently the whole way. Really enjoy listening to you both, and not just because I admitted to a having crush on Jenny after the last video. Thanks loads for all the great stuff. 🙂
If you're the frontman of a big famous rock band, of course you're larger than life & you wouldn't be acting the same way off stage as when you're performing. You can behave both ways & be the same person...loved that podcast, thanks JMF & JH.
Love you and jenny’s banterx
Commenting again because I can’t believe this just happened after listening to the podcast! I work remotely, from home, I went for my daily walk on my break. Someone from a parked car, maybe Uber or something said to me, Hey, didn’t you work for “XYZ” Company? It was someone I worked with in the office pre-lockdown. It totally threw me, caught me off-guard. I had to shift gears and I felt like I didn’t even know how to act!!! It felt so weird!! What you guys were just talking about! That’s crazy lol!!!
I'll become completely honest with you. I've been a basic "classic rocker" since i was 10 (and 56 now), and never even heard of you or your band until i started watching Y.T. posts on this type of content a little while back, but have truly gained a lot of respect for you since then. Keep making quality videos with good commentary.
Oh wow! Manager is looking sharp!!! 💥
I love these discussions with the young Keith Moon, never seen him so sober
One of the great things about The Darkness is Justin and the guys seem pretty serious about not being too serious.
So honest and natural people just talking about how to be a human and be creative at the same time
I love these discussions both of you have, so much fun and interesting, keep up the good work!! Cheers from Montreal, Canada 🤘😎🤘
My fall back was audio engineering. It helped a heck of a lot in the end since they dovetail quite nicely.
Interesting point at the end about tinkering forever on music. I think since the advent of digital recording, especially at home, the temptation to over-think and re-do, tinker endlessly is a problem that we didn't face when most of our recording was done in a studio on the clock at our own expense or even at a a label's expense. You had more of a tendency to finally throw in the towel and understand that's as good as it's going to get under those circumstances. Now since we all at least have a laptop an interface and some mics, you can easily love what you're doing one night and wake up the next morning and fuck it all off because you slept funny.
Nice one Guys and Girls. Wish You Tube and your video was around in the eighties when I was trying to be a rock star. I auditioned for a local band on a Wednesday and got the gig, probably in part I had a 5150 Stack and a Black Gibson Les Paul. They phoned the next day and said we would be playing on Friday. Would have been my first gig and with no rehearsal so I freaked out and bailed. If I had seen this video I would have went, made mistakes and had fun.
Each path is different to “making it” Definitely should know your craft. Know your purpose and take advantage of opportunities presented. The best musicians I know people chase them. Most people won’t achieve fame. Also people that just want to to be famous are pretentious and probably don’t have the ambition or creativity to stay relevant. Just be you ride the wave and manifest your dreams.
every time you inhale that smoke it hurts my soul. I don't give a toss if anybody smokes but you're not just anybody, you're Justin fucking Hawkins and you have the voice of an angel. You've been using that voice to save rock n roll for all of us

Sometimes i think that having a Nonchalant attitude about some things makes other things easier to achieve. When we allow ourselves to get too wrapped up into things, we overthink and mostly sabotage ourselves.
London rock music is definitely south now, Black Midi, Dry Cleaning, Black Country New Road (Cambridge or whatever I know but playing in brixton), all the good pop punk stuff etc
