I DIAGNOSE & FIX MY BROKEN FIESTA ST180! *CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD*

Welcome back all,
Mk2Mitch Classic car gathering: e/176xeqG9x
This video was not one I expected to make but we have to deal with issues as and when they occur. Once we broke down and finally got my Fiesta ST180 home, I could have a good look over the engine and diagnose the fault. At first I was puzzled as to why the spark plug no.4 was loose but I revealed the cause later in the video to be a cracked cylinder head.
Stripping the cylinder head from the engine block involved removing a lot of parts! This modern engine isn't like the basic old ford engines and has a lot of sensors and wires that control the vehicle. Finding a replacment cylinder head proved harder than expected as I couldn't just buy a bare head and build it up with my valves/cams from my original head. I eventually bought a second hand cylinder head and had that skimmed/cleaned by Chris at Clump Fab.
Rebuilding the engine was fairly straight forward. I had already timed up the engine and decided that now would be a fitting time to replace the cam belt, water pump etc. Once all back together I filled the engine & gearbox with oil along with re-filling the coolant. On the first start up the fiesta didn't run properly and the engine wouldn't rev up. After a look on my diagnostic tool I realised I hasn't reconnected the plug for the throttle body and once that was plugged back in the ST180 ran perfectly!
That's a job jobbed!

I have a '14 ST180. - Drinks a litlle bit of coolant. - Rough idle (RPM not constant, a bit of little pops from the exhaust). - Engine hesitates under load (better now, but not completely solved with a new injector). - Spark plug on driver side (LHD) is stuck. Spark plug were supposedly changed 5000 miles ago. Do you think there is any chance it will be the head? Do you know of any heads of better quality?

excellent job. good to hear it running again. good old ford ecoboom engines! just one tip for you when jump starting a modern engine with voltage sensing on the neg battery terminal, always put you earth directly to the engine, not to the battery , as i have seen many cars that have a voltage spike , blowing the voltage sensor and in rare cases the ecu. New car sounds like a van.

However just as i decided to come home i gave it a little and the car like pulled back completely lost power it was kinda dangerous as i didnt expect it . Then all the way home it would have power again briefly then loose again but i was expecting it this time . Then i got a engine light come on amber still not flashing and to top it off i cant even look under the bonnet as the latch doesn't seem to work 😅 . Its on warranty for 3 months and the man said he would pay for repair on engine and latch. It has a outstanding recall which ford have it in to be looked at .... but i dont have aclue what they are going to do they havent said much to me . I really am a little frustrated as i have had the car one day . Please someone talk some sense and help me have a understanding of possible issues before any looks at it for peace of mind . You were given wrong info ref the cam buckets on the used head. The cam buckets are of different thickness to suit the valve clearance. What you should have done is taken the buckets from your old head and put them into the used head and reassembled the head with the cams . The valve clearances now need to be measured. If for instance the valve clearance on one valve ( between the back of the cam lobe and the bucket) is 0.1mm too big you get a new bucket 0.1mm taller to compensate. The bucket sizes are on the underside. What you now have is a head with unmeasured valve clearances. With a tight clearance you now risk burnt valves. If you were selling the car anyway the easy fix is clean out the thread with brake cleaner and use JB Ultra weld on the plug threads. Using a good amount replace the plug and leave for 24hrs. The plug will never come out again. It would have been 'fixed' for £10..

Very interesting comment about the cam buckets etc. unfortunately the bodge you described towards the end of the video is not what I’m about. I do not and will not bodge a car up just to make a profit and watch someone else loose from my actions. Luckily in this video I repaired the engine properly and it’s all up and running again 👍🏻

@@statementleaver8095 I explained in the video you cannot get the spark plug hole re-tapped or a insert installed as the stark plug hole has a taper. The old head is only good for the bin 👍🏻

@@Mk2Mitch Misunderstood in the video.👍 Thought you hadn't thought of CNC Machinist. Obviously it was made previously by Ford....Can't create clean Thread a few millimetres whilst Foundry casting.🤔 Being a Metal worker myself.......Drilling and Plugging has never been an Issue. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Doesn't matter how much is Cut away when Molten is the solution to infill.👍 Although Price of Repair is usually the problem resulting in Binned for New. Taper seems a bit of an Excuse considering the Head is Mass produced......Technology's come on a long way in 20 years Any gap big enough for a Spark Plug is sufficient for a tap&dye. Whilst Thread on Spark Plug only at Bottom cm. Rest is Fall space for Coil/HT. Cutting tool is no bigger than Drill Bit. Personally I think You got Fobbed off👍👍
