i-D Meets: Rina Sawayama
Through Rina Sawayama's alternative take on East Asian beauty standards and philosophical, "glittery cute" R&B sound, the Niigata-born, London-bred musician and model has carved a path of her own with few precedents to look up to. I really identify with her. I’m japanese and I moved to the uk when I was 5, when I needed school lunches my mum would make me japanese food and I’d see people with crisps and normal cheese sandwiches and that was all I’d want because everyone would look at my lunch weird and say omg is that sushi when it wasn’t or whatever. It’s really empowering seeing this kinda stuff and I’m really happy, thank you so much.
