Hi Vanessa! My husband and I thank you for grooming Max with the care and patience that you showed, it would have been months before he would see his regular groomers and we appreciate you seeing him so quickly! For anyone wondering, we honestly did not know he had fleas, he never scratched himself or whined or reacted in any way. We never noticed them when bathing him, and the vet has never pointed them out to us. We contacted our vet immediately after his groom, and he is now on medication to get rid of those nasty things, and we are making sure to clean our home as best as we can. We are truly sorry for any problems they had caused during or after his groom. Both my husband and I are truly grateful for your work, especially given the trouble we may have caused. I’m sure everyone will be happy to know that Max is much more comfortable and livelier since having been groomed, and he will be getting all the pats and belly rubs he rightly deserves! :)

These things happen. I found giving everything a spritz with a 50/50 mix of plain vinegar and water helps to repel fleas. The smell doesn't last long, and it doesn't stain. I live in rural Texas, and fleas come inside just walking into the house from outside. I even stay my shoes, ankles, and pants legs. It helps.

It's ridiculous that we can't use words like "dead" or "suicide". Yes, those words carry heavy meanings with them, but pretending they don't exist doesn't negate that the things those words are connected to do exist. It just means people have to find other, more ridiculous and roundabout ways to say essentially the same thing. It all sounds incredibly stupid and immature. YT treating everyone like small children when it comes to use of common linguistic terms while allowing utter depravity is mind-blowingly idiotic.

Great job with Max. I have a super-senior (16+) Chihuahua mix who whines like this much of the time. He is 95% blind and about 70% deaf. I rescued him when he was 2. I've started bathing, lightly de-shedding and trimming his nails myself because venturing away from home stresses him out. So grateful I don't have to clip him. I appreciate your calm approach to every dog. This has helped me to try to remain calm and confident while grooming/tidying my dogs. Thanks for all you do.

We recently said good bye to our super senior shih-tzu. Having an ancient dog is so stressful when they need grooming…and it’s so true that in the end, the groom becomes one of function….you shave the dog down so the next appt is in 3-4 months instead of 4 weeks and all you care about is whether they get nicked or not. I did all the sanitary grooming and bushing in between. Our dog was blind and deaf as well and had to have the same groomer for her last 2 years every time, because she knew her and what scared her and made her nippy (she had like 2 teeth at the end). My husband booked with someone else one time and she was put in “time out” for “aggression.”

I have a chihuahua senior too, tho not senior, she's just turned 9 and we've had her since she was a puppy (sadly when she was about 4 weeks since her mother turned aggressive in depression). Ever I give her baths and she's a good swimmer and accustomed to the bath, I have to use the drummel (?) on her nails since the nail clippers are too rough and because she has a dislocating leg, her ears are always clean by themselves, unfortunately not the best dental (we can't do dental work since she has a severe heart murmur) but we try to help her do the absolute best and work with what's the least stressful for her. Luckily, she never had problems with change and is very good with grooming, but I have to remind myself that it could change if her leg gets worse or if she develops arthritis or ankle pains

I lost my 15 year old powderpuff in June. His groomer was amazing, even though he was super uncomfortable his last few visits. We did as much as we could at home, but she knew how to take care of him the best to minimize the time and discomfort of his grooming. We knew he was getting close to the end when he wasn't tolerant of even gentle brushing or snuggles that he didn't initiate. That long!? I don't know what the world record is for the oldest dog, but a dog living for that long should mean that it was taken really good care. I can imagine how heart broken you would be for your dog to pass away. But since that's way past the normal max age a dog could live, it only names sence to feel a bit at peice that your dog lived for that long in a healthy life style. It was only time for them to eventualy go from old age or some kind of sickness that emerged from old age. I remember when my dog passed at the age of 14. He was in pain from some lumps on his body and hearing him whine is too sad. But since he's old, we felt more at peace and relived that he is no longer in pain and lived to the max dog age. Compared to the first dog that passed away at age 7 unexpectedly do to cancer, it was an easy goodbye since we did not expect our 7 year old to jave to be put down early in life

I bet you were gutted... My little sister was three when we got our now eight-yearold standard boy, and we had puppies right after her tenth birthday. They're her best pals, she spends so much time with our parade of poodles, so I know she'll be crushed as my parents and me, or ev, more so, when anything happens to one later. Being deaf is a spectrum, most animals that are deaf have some level of remaining hearing however with deafness speaking louder doesnt work because you are missing the ability to hear certain spectrums of sound rather than things just being harder to hear. If they can't hear you they can still feel it. You can still talk to them and they will have some level of imput. Animals that have hearing loss due to age are likely hard of hearing rather than deaf so if you speak loud there's a chance he can hear you to some degree.

Well with a coat like that the owner may have not noticed the fleas. They would not notice the flea unless they are brushing the dog and even then you need to do some hunting or use a flea comb. Meanwhile I am sure they get dogs in with fleas all the time. With small short hair dog you can get by not using flea prevention by just brushing and running flea comb though them everyday.

My dog has a massively dense coat, ticks never get to her because of her fur but this one time I spotted a flea on her and I directly treated the entire house and dog. Flea infestations are a horrible pain in the ass to deal with. This is the same as going to a barber shop with your head covered in head lice. You just cannot do this, it's a health hazard. And as a pet owner, you have a big responsibility to keep a close eye to your pet.

It's hard to say when we don't know the situation at home. Maybe they are seniors who can't see well, have mobility issues hence outsourcing the groom, or are just overwhelmed with first managing the cancer that is more pressing. The key point is that the owners are doing something and this dog seems to be doing relatively okay for his age/sickness, as compared to so many abused, neglected or abandoned dogs. Vanessa always mentions about giving the benefit of the doubt and not to lay blame, so I think we can do the same here too.

Fleas detect water and run for those spots, so the spots we hit are, around the ears, around the mouth n nose. On the butt and feet. Then apply water and when the fleas run lol they run into death. We never put inside ears nose or mouth we were always careful.

Those in your care are truly fortunate. I rescued a male Maltese years ago, when I found him wandering the streets. I strongly suspect that his owner died and the relatives didn’t want him. At the time, the vet thought that he was 15 years old. My friend was a pet groomer, and we quickly found out that he was easy to groom as long as I was holding him, otherwise he was nearly impossible. When she retired, I fortunately found a groomer that let me hold him for groom. He passed when he was 22 years old. I will never forget my spicy little Nicco.❤

Amazing job with Max. I had a 20yr min pin who passed away this past July and grooming a dog who can’t see , hear , and has tumors is so unbelievably difficult. We had to bath our Jada at home once she lost her hearing and sight it was just so unbelievably stressful for her. 5 ⭐️ for you ! And Max your a handsome ole man pup 😘🥰

If the dog is, blind and deaf, my suggestion is keep the owner's unwashed cloth like shirt around while grooming helps a lot. I know it's unconventional, but that will make dogs more relaxed thinking that their owners are around

One of my westies, grandfather to my current very fit and well 14 year old boy, lived to just shy of his 19th birthday. He was still pretty mobile though also deaf and blind at the end, and he had some dementia…would walk into a corner and stand there unable to figure out how to walk out again. He got quite grumpy about being groomed, I just shaved him eventually. It was mostly his front legs he objected to being brushed. He developed an osteosarcoma on his jaw, and the day he refused both his meals…normally he fell on the food lol…I called the vet out. He wasn’t a very affectionate dog like his grandsons…I kept two…but he was a helluva character and very clever, could do high level obedience and lots of tricks. When he felt like it lol.

I had a Boston terrier that was 14 years old, deaf, blind, and senile. He was also arthritic but still loved sunbathing and belly rubs. He, too, was a nipper because he never knew what was going on. As long as he could smell his people, he was fine. He'd gone everywhere with me his whole life, even travel nursing, so the place never mattered. But he would definitely bite if he couldn't tell what was happening and none of his familiar smells were around. I had to let him go last November, and I think of him everyday❤

Bless you Max and all our older pets, those we love and those we still miss forever. 🐶❤🐱

Vanessa, I discovered that a flea comb dipped in rubbing alcohol killed adult fleas instantly. I'd dip the comb, then run through my dog's / cat's hair. I did that as an immediate response until I could bath them in flea shampoo, bomb the house, etc. At the time I had my dogs, cat, and my mom's dog, the flea preventative wasn't around and all we had was flea spray - which was horrible as they'd be able to lick it. No idea what rubbing alcohol does or doesn't do to eggs. My question - have you ever used that method before the bath (when you can moisturize their skin to counteract the drying effect of the rubbing alcohol), and generally what are your thoughts of that as a quick though temporarily effective action? And what do you do to prevent fleas from hitching a ride on you, and into your house?

@novampires223 makes sense - if enough rubbing alcohol gets to them. Presumably combing with the flea comb dipped in alcohol could do the trick. I just never saw eggs, didn't know to look for them. I tried to use the alcohol sparingly. Interesting thing, the flea problem wasn't resolved until my dad unwittingly treated the lawn - he hired a service, because he wanted a nice lawn. Never said anything about fleas to them - because the fleas chomped on me & mom and left dad totally alone. Anyway, whatever they used, it did the final trick.

Having grown up in a house with parents that had AKC Show level Standard Poodles, I'm not surprised that Max is a sassy old man. Poodles seem to become more characters as they get older. For Max compound that character with the sarcoma, blindness and deafness, and it's surprising he's only sensitive about his feet and face being groomed. As always excellent job Vanessa. Hope the disinfection of your shop wasn't too exhausting.

Another compassionate thought for the owners is that they are 18 years older too. They got this poodle to his 18th year so far! We are differently abled throughout our life physically and financially. I had my bichon for 12.5 wonderful years. She got diabetes and I got severe osteoarthritus in both knees in her last 3 years. WALKING WAS PAINFUL BUT I still walked her twice a day. I could afford her meds, special food and grooming because I still worked ($6000+ year) . I currently do not have a dog due to walking disability and retirement income. It's my hope one day after knee surgery and recovery that I can rehome an old rescue small dog. In my Esme's last year the vet did not want to give her vaccines or flea medication due to her delicate condition and she was blind and becoming deaf and loosing hair. I brushed her daily and kept a watchful eye, and due to our increasing disabilities walked her only once a day. I loved her dearly. It was hard to end her suffering but I was with her to the end. Thank you GWTD for your care and kindness because I know his pet parents are extremely grateful. ❤❤❤.

Agreed, caring for senior pets can be hard on the pockets. I have an elderly cat that's on medications for hyperthyroidism and early stage kidney disease, and visits the vet regularly to manage her conditions. We love her dearly and have had her for 16 years, even though the yearly tally on vet bills and refills is no joke. But we can still afford it, and will keep caring for her until she's having fewer good days than bad.

For having a painful health condition, I can tell you: we usually don't mind being in a situation that is uncomfortable (almost everything is!!!) as long as we feel better after, and I'm sure Max would agree!! He doesn't itch anymore, you've been patient with him, approaching his face a couple of times so that he doesn't feel too overwhelmed.... My chihuahua had a small tumor under the right armpit area it wasn't anything like this, but it was inoperable. That and her being 13 they said she might have less than a year to live. And they were correct unfortunately. She passed away a few months later. Anyway I hope his human family make his life as peacefull and comfortable as they can for what ever time he has left. ❤

I have cats and often times they always have a chance to bring fleas by accident! I learned that it isn't a "once a year treatment" it is a once a MONTH treatment which you have to keep reapplying every single month on the same day to keep the pet protected from those nuinsance bugs! It took me half a year to have the fleas cleared and we regularly cleaned the entire house but we managed! If you don't want your pet to get uncomfortable, itchy and have infections and diseases please give them monthly flea treatment, it will save a lot of stress and a lot of work you have to do around your pet and at home, besides fleas can hide in warm and dark areas even when its cold! Spot-on treatment you put on the neck is a better, stress-free choice as your pet doesn't have to eat tablets and the liquid gets absorbed through the skin.

I lived in the tropics in the late 80s and an endless battle against fleas was just a fact of life. Following a hurricane hit we experienced a massive infestation when dormant flea eggs in the carpet and other places hatched at once. It took two supermarket bombs and finally a professional to get it under control. The dogs and cats learned to tolerate frequent baths and flea dips. Topical preventives were still new and didn't agree with my (fortunately short-haired) senior dog. But the worst thing about fleas is that they can carry TAPEWORMS!!! 😝💩 So be vigilant!
