    Glad you and the passenger are okay. Impacts at ~100 km/h are still no joke. Fingers crossed the material damage turns out to be not that bad. And I see the detective work is already ongoing. One thing I would have added is that since you have the original uncompressed footage, I'd frame by frame look at each of the laps to see if the look of the surface changes, meaning if there was a coolant spill.. but seeing the pinned comment it seems the problem / cause might rather have been suspension damage. You mention the cause in the end doesn't matter, but I think it does a) because you will know for certain it wasn't your fault b) there might be a technical revelation that will lead to a safer vehicle in the future.

    One thing I noticed straight away from the video of the crash, misha let go of the brake right before turning immediately to maximum, usually you'd want to keep a bit more load on the fronts so they'd grip and turn instead of understeering. Also it happened right on the camber transition into the turn.

    The more experienced you are and the more innocuous the situation appears, the more this kind of stuff will bother you. You've had seemingly worse situations you've saved. the confidence and having it linger in the back of your mind is the thing i struggle with, (just had a total loss after no accidents for 15 years), having done similar speeds as Misha and road racing, then to have some akward incident/collision come out of nowhere. My lexus rcf got cut off/sideswiped probably by a drunk driver into a tall curb at 70 kph not setting off the airbags, but having the drivers side suspension mostly cause $40K in damages according to the auto repair shop. Ughhhh :/

    Glad both of you are okay! Massive balls to put the footage here for everyone to see and hopefully learn. It shows why so many crashes happen in this corner. Because of the crest mid turn-in, it is vital to point the car towards the corner before the decompression. During the lap 3 it seems like you are pointing less towards the apex and the first impression is that you prioritised braking and steered less because of the porsche ahead, but after watching it over and over it shows it was an effect of reduced grip and ABS kicking in and you trying to regain grip by reducing steering input. Man this is tricky stuff. No wonder why a certain gentleman called it a green hell. Btw you pausing the footage at 4:17 revealed the absolute best "at this moment he knew he fucked up" moment, If ever I've seen one.

    It's just pilot error. He does not turn his steering wheel enough in relation to another lap and for good reason, the trajectory is not good. He accelerates in the bend and shifts to the left. The car is no longer supported on the front and the rear is destabilized. At this moment it is already more in the trajectory. There is no inclination of the turn or good grip at this point. The noise you hear may be the acceleration 4:14.

    When the WRX came to the USA as a 2002 model year vehicle, the brake system was a mish-mash of junk parts off of other models and wasnt worth....well....it was SCARY BAD, especially if there were any surface irregularities in the braking zone......My 2002 WRX rolled right through several stop signs with the brake pedal pushed THROUGH the floor as the ABS decided it was going to engage over some slight bumps in the tarmac.....I put the JDM 4 pot brakes on the front and did the famous 'H6' rear(solid rotors) swap(290mm rotors up from stock 266)....MOTUL fluid and AXXIS Ultimate pads all around, and then pulled the ABS fuse and wired in a switch to re-enable it if I wanted(NEVER did) and the brakes were no longer dangerous, but it took some doing to get them that way. I WOULD NEVER TRUST ANY SUBARU DESIGNED ABS.

    I've been track driving for over 20 years. Crashing is inevitable. Be it from mechanical failure, tire failure, a momentary lapse in judgement, whatever, it's GOING to happen. It's part of the risk you accept when you go to the track. Every experienced driver who pushes around the limit will crash at some point, no matter how good of a driver they are. I remember when I crashed my Lotus Elise it was a huge ego check. I had been putting up really fast lap times and was feeling pretty good about myself. After the crash, I felt like I totally sucked. But it was just part of the learning process. You can drive around a track for years without ever crashing -- assuming you aren't pushing hard. But if you like seeing just how fast you can go, it's going to happen. Every pro driver has a crash story.

    Here is my view - I know the cornering speed was roughly the same as the other laps but you were overtaking that Porsche slightly off line and the tyres/chassis could not handle that request hence the understeer moment. God speed.

    No Misha, I’m so sorry! Just met you and saw the car this weekend. Feels unreal. Definitely something was on the track. Looks like steering went away completely. This is one of the biggest risks on the Nordschleife and it will take out both professionals and first-timers. No warnings, just boom! 😔 That car will be up and running again in no time. I’m glad you’re ok. Always most important of all! 😊❤

    What I noticed on the 3rd lap is that you brake slightly later (and maybe harder ?) on a part where the track goes down a little before the turn (I'm definitely not a pilot so I'm just speculating from what I'm seeing), but my only guess would be that the car braked when it was lifting from the track at that exact spot? (causing the grip loss and ABS activating) Feel free to tell me what you think about this theory !

    Hey Misha, I think the reason you understeered was because you were too close to the Cayman gt4 and you lost a lot of downforce. In lap 1, you didn't lose front end downforce because the Cayman gt4 was to the right of you and let you pass. In lap 2, it was a similar situation because there were no cars in front of you so you didn't lose any front end downforce. Glad to you hear you guys are okay! Keep up with the great videos. It's a Toyota GR86 and not a Formula 1 car. There is no loss of downforce, especially in slow corners. I drove right behind GT3 several times at high speed (Kesselchen, Schwedenkreuz) and everything was fine. Regardless, something was wrong with the GR86 at that moment 💁‍♂️

    Misha at 4:04 there is a dark line on the tarmac under the LHS of the Porche in front that doesn't appear to be there on the previous laps. Maybe a sprinkling of collant that would cause the wheels (ABS) to lock up momentarily which would then slide your line too wide into the turn to recover.

  • @RacingRyan
    @RacingRyan11 ай бұрын

    I have a theory. Maybe the crash happened because of the Toyota safety features built into the car. See at 1:32 the car automatically put it's emergency flashers on detecting a crash from getting too close to the Porsche ahead. Maybe the safety features took over and didn't let you steer and brake as you normally would?

    My thought is lack of downforce and/or turbulent air coming off the Porsche, you can see this affect in Lap 1 there there is a slight bit of understeer, make the distance between cars closer and add 5km of speed and this cause lack of traction and there for understeer - the crash.
