I Crashed & Broke My Collarbone | My Road to Recovery

Спорт

I had a massive MTB crash which left me with a fractured & displaced clavicle.
I am recording a recovery journal and putting the theory that diet & nutrition can stimulate & help the bone rapidly repair itself as some doctors have stated on the internet.
My hope is that I can help some of you who are dealing with a fractured bone understand how long the healing process takes & I will be giving you some tips and tricks I have picked up over the next few weeks regarding the recovery of a broken bone.
This is the first week of my recovery journal.

The sling is useless, last couple of times I just struck my hand in my pocket. (wasn't given a sling). I did a 10 hour race 6weeks to the day after my last break. Heal up quick! For anybody curious like me.. I done mine in two places 5 weeks ago on my road bike, I'm able to move around normally but above head is still a little bit sore/uncomfortable... Got to ride my MTB around the city yesterday pain free and been on a turbo trainer using zwift since end of week 2 (one hand for week 2 and by end of week 3 had 2 hands on the bike)... If it happens to you be patient because the last 5 weeks for me went by fast... Focus on what you can do, and not what you can't do

    How do you feel now? With no surgery? I broke my right collarbone a week ago doing a nose dive off a steep wooden feature going too fast. My x ray looks a lot like yours. It'sTechnically broken in 3 places. I'm debating whether I should go for surgery or let it heal naturally.... I'm quite active and wanting to ensure full recovery... Function, strength, range of motion, ability, etc. Add have heard some horror stories about ppl who let it heal naturally. Cons of surgery- obvious surgery risks, scars and foreign object in body, nerve damage (which apparently comes back after a while). Pros: proper alignment and faster recovery (hear little Complaints from ppl who have elected to have surgery), function, etc. What are your thoughts based on your experience?

  • @antiherobc

    @antiherobc

    oh man, It's a tough one, I can't suggest what you should do unfortunately. I have 100% mobility and absolutely no pain in the area unless I put a lot of pressure on the lump that's formed from the bone healing itself. I do hear a little click somewhere in my shoulder area when I do certain weight lifting movements but there is no pain at all so I guess it's all good inside there and it may still take a little to be 100% inside there.

    Man, heal up well! No pain is probably a good sign, after I broke my collarbone in 2014 I initially wasn't in much pain either, but they gave me painkillers at the hospital anyway. I tried to do without them, but that didn't go too well, I could hardly sleep the first night, and only in an upright position (i.e. with my back leaned on the couch). I was scheduled for an OP though and got myself a shiny titan plate, and after that pain killers truly were a must for about a week to heal up. Took me 3 months to officially fully recover, and some more time to get my confidence back. At least you know why it happened, for me I just... fell, and I don't really know why. 🙄 I do wonder though, is the preview image actually from your collarbone? Because it does look pretty shifted in that. Not much different from mine, which was broken into three pieces. Stay strong, not being able to ride was probably the hardest challenge!

    Hey there sp00n, thanks for the info and motivation. Oh man, 3 months off the bike must have been rough. Yeah the preview was my xray from the fracture, it was apparently a z break with some displacement.

  • @sp00n

    @sp00n

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hm, not sure I would've gone with the conservative procedure here, if the collarbone is displaced like this. The shoulder can become shorter if it grows together twisted, and you could feel a bump for quite some time until the bone structure is being reabsorbed by the body. You also don't seem to wear that pressure strap bandage that is sometimes used to keep the collarbone in place (rucksack bandage? No idea about the English translation), although the actual benefit of it is questionable anyway (they gave me one for the first night though). That being said, neither of this is necessarily bad, but did you get a second opinion? Two weeks is probably still early enough to perform an operation, if need be.

    Damn Wayne! Sorry about your shoulder bro. I dislocated my collar bone a few years ago, definitely took me more than 4 weeks to recover, didn't break it. The legament holding it down was gone though. I'm sure a healthy diet will aid a faster recovery. I would try to keep on a stationary bike just to keep your conditioning and cardio at a medium until you're fully recovered since when I was recovering, my biggest challenges were the weight gain and loss of cardio during my recovery. You can see my crash on my channel that caused my potato shoulder :) I'm guessing you weren't recording when you flew 10 metres? THAT would have been one hell of a video for the start of 2018!!!

    Damn dude!!! I feel your pain! I’ve broken both of mine, my left side 2 years ago and my right about 10 years ago. Get well soon! Look into an “x-brace” cause it’s better than the sling. It keeps your shoulder up and back so it’s stabilized but you can still move your arm. Keeping your arm in a sling will make it super stiff and your elbow will hurt really bad when you first try to move your arm.

    I've seen a photo of someone riding both brakes on the same side - index finger for the front, middle finger for the back brake. He's missing a couple of fingers on his other hand, and he seems to do pretty well with that setup.

  • @sp00n

    @sp00n

    6 жыл бұрын

    Checked out the channel, and indeed that's his setup. I was thrown off by the channel name, indicating that he doesn't use the front brake at all, but he has changed that to a dual brake setup when he received his prosthetic. Also interestingly he seemed to prefer the back brake to the front brake, as for regular bikes outside of left handed driving countries (such as the UK, and probably South Africa as well?) the front brake is actually positioned on the left side, which would be his "natural" side. It's probably more safe this way, as an emergency brake with the back at least won't send you straight over the bars. Although the braking efficiency will go way down if you only use the back brake, skidding all around the place.

  • @TheCrashingDad

    @TheCrashingDad

    sp00n - yeah ! 🤘 I live in Colorado, USA... And MY front brake is on the left side... I think Eric (Texas, USA) originally came up with the name from motorcycle riding... Where the right hand is the front brake, and the left is clutch. 👍 I think despite any braking inefficiencies, Eric does a pretty good job adapting to it

    Probably depends on the break. I didn't get surgery and my collar healed up without any problems. It not back to it's original position and I can see where it broke because it bulges out there but I have 100% movement and no pain or restrictions in the area of the break. The bone will only start healing at around 4 or 5 weeks after the break once the inflammation goes down. Listen to the doc, take it easy and don't rush it. you'll be back doing things in a few weeks time. Good luck my Bru ✌🏻❤️

    Broke my collarbone really badly racing and it took me 3 months to heal and more time to feel normal again. Doc told me it was pretty bad break and i was on the verge of surgery but elected not to due to cost (hooray US medical system). Hopefully you heal quicker but its for sure a bad injury in any case. I was in a figure 8 harness or what some call an X brace the whole 3 months. It ended up being too tight and pulled my bones apart and it had to heal the gap it created.

    Steve Y thanks dude, a friend told me it helped him recover fast, I'm keen to put that theory to the test. I have also drastically cut down my meat intake to try reduce my carbon footprint.

    Ride Rate Review interesting. I like the idea of reducing carbon footprint. Keep the videos coming sir. Even if you aren’t riding I enjoy seeing South Africa and it’s people (I’m in California, about 20 miles from where @bkxc lives).
