Jackson's physicality with playing Stephen is extraordinary. I know we love to harp on about the cane, but when he swirls that glass in the library? That's some refined behavior for an old slave. And it says so much.

@@mellomoose_ not an alternative universe. He is that. When he walks with Franco Nero he lays himself down for Nero to walk on him. Same with Sergio Leone 😎
The sudden change in Steven is still such an amazing moment. It shows exactly who he is. He faked everything from his personality to his limp, all for the purpose of becoming the head house slave. Dropping the cane, he was expecting to have a fist fight with Django, or at the very least he intended to die as himself.

The way in which Django is able to build his confidence and character throughout the film is done in such a comprehensive way that it’s hard not to like him. Going from being a slave in a caravan, naked and shackled without the slightest comprehension of moderate level English, to being a well dressed, horse riding free man is a symbol of his progression throughout the film as he becomes accustomed to his new life. What a movie
@kunalm15

You should hear Jamie Foxx's interview on howard stern. He came in trying to act cool on day one, Tarantino told him to cut that shit out. He is a slave who doesn't know how to read or handle guns. He learns throughout the movie, then in the end kills the bad guys and walks away like a boss. Play it like that. Tarantino wrote this character to perfection.

It's really satisfying to see that whole transition. Just being one in a line of shackled slaves at the start, not standing out from them in any way. As dehumanised and broken as the rest of them. And getting to truly explore who he is once free, with someone eager to teach him as sort of a father figure. It's a lot in the little things too, he really gets that behaviour down well as he grows as a character. Jamie Foxx really did an amazing job in the role.

You know, I love how at the start of this clip, Stephen straightens himself out and drops his cane, revealing his true self. It confirms what we've noticed about him up to this point: that even though he's been presenting himself as this weak older guy who had Calvin's ear and was able to play mind tricks on everyone, this is the moment where we see him without the act and as his true, able-bodied self. When it's just him and Django in the room, he drops his cane and literally drops the act he's been presenting to everyone. At least until Django blows his knees off, showing him dropping the cane was pointless anyway.

That's the max depth in the message this movie amounts to.
Fun fact: In the orignal draft of Django Unchained, that you can buy as a pretty sweet graphic novel, Django gave the remaining inhabitants of Candyland a chance of dueling him, including Miss Laura, six against one. He even gave Shultz' derringer to Stephen so it'd be a fair fight. Needless to say he gunned them down, but Stephen and Calvin's lawyer survived, aiming their guns at Django before he pulled out his second gun and ignited the dynamite he had set up. The graphic novel also details what Broomhilda got up to after being sold, how she came into the possession of Calvin Candie and it elaborates on how Dr. Schultz turned Django into the man he became some more. There are also a few minor characters that get a chance to shine, including Ace Woody the Mandingo trainer and the slaves that Django frees at the end of the movie. You don't find out why that one guy is called Eskimo Joe though.

@@AtreVire I would also add that for the most part nowadays it seems that when they are including different ethnicities, culture and such, they are doing it likely for either political reasons or to take advantage of a trend. Because being anti racism and inclusive is “cool” nowadays. And I am all for more diversity but most of the time it really feels like they are just doing it to fill up a list, and it shows up.
