I worked at a winery for 10+ years. We used ozone to sanitize barrels. PVC hoses used to transport ozonated water into the barrels had frequent leaks. We switched to silicone hoses because they were advertised as having better ozone resistance. The silicone hoses lasted much longer. Ozone (O3) is a strong oxidizer.

Yes. Also mention that getting the oil off of the mask makes a better seal. I told pts when it is clean it sticks to the skin and makes a better seal. When it gets the facial oils on there and feels slick and it leaks. Don't know if the discoloration effects anything - probably makes it brittle but not known.

So glad You did this experiment 😎👍🏼 I have a SoClean I stopped using when my CPAP machine brand found to have seal leak due to Ozone. I looked at Medicare and DME. After 13 months rental, I own it. So I threw it away. The DME provider told me I couldn’t throw it away and ask for a new one. They had no replacements & waiting for info from CPAP machine manufacturers. I told Him, I own it, the Seals may be degraded and I want a new one. I worked up to talk to the owner. I asked if they had new CPAP machines for sale in their store. He said Yes. I said I want one. They finally relented. Your video affirms my decision to dump my SoClean.TY

It takes some time for the Ozone to damage the hose. And it depends on the concentration of the ozone. The more UV light that is exposed to the air the higher the ozone levels will be. Normally when generating Ozone, a metal shield is fitted over the long UV light and can be slide over the light or pulled off the light by a certain amount. This makes the amount of UV light exposed to the air change. I worked for the EPA and ran the Ozone monitor. I watched the Indiana State Board of Health Air Pollution Control Air Monitoring Section guys come to town from INDY to calibrate the ozone machine. They had different settings on the light shield inside their Ozone calibration devise that they used to generate various ozone levels from 0 to 0.5 PPM Ozone and then check the Ozone monitor's response. Our ozone monitor had a zero knob and a high point know that was calibrated and could be changed to read the correct ozone reading while ozone at various concentration was fed into the machine. The slope was set, and the Beckman Ozone monitor was then calibrated. Now I'm thinking that these ozone cleaning devices use UV light inside them to break the O2 molecules in the air into O3 and O. Both are highly reactive which is how they kill bacteria and fungal spore in the tubing and mask. The slower the air flow in the cleaning device the higher the exposure to UV light will be and the higher the ozone concentrations will be.

It was never a real concern for me one way or another because I replace all of the parts I mentioned every few of months anyway.

I think you need to do the ozone test without butter and conductive paste inside. Anything inside the box will out gas and contribute to that discoloration you see. It’s possible the material would have discolored anyways but I think the two substances you added to the box may have contributed significantly to the discoloration.

The Check Valve that you had to install on the modified reservoir lid, prevents water from leaving the reservoir and entering either machine. The warranty of CPAP machines is only 1-3 years and, generally speaking, most patients CPAP therapy is covered by their insurance. This includes machine, headgear, frame, filters, and masks. This “test” was unconventional at best. Also, the tester has stated he has never actually worked with a “SoClean” machine so how can he speak to its performance? He cannot. I've used a SoClean now for about three years and have noticed less sore throat. None actually. A note though, on the cleaner and a Philips Respironics CPAP machine. They are replacing the CPAP machines due to a breakdown of a sound insulator that the ozone flows over, breaking it down. This just happened last week and not a lot is known from my med supplier though. Philips is saying it will take some weeks to replace and to use only the mask and hose in the SoClean for the time being. Resp Doc says that the breakdown of the insulation can cause all sorts of nasty vapors and even some bits to flow through the mask in use. Some are "C" causing vapors. I will follow and let you know what they come up with, but for me, it's back to Dawn and vinegar at least once a week... I do like the ozone odor though... Edit, I did just watch your video from June and am keeping up with the news. Thank you much...

My suspicions came from the health and environmental disclaimers on home/office ozone machines which warn of plastic degradation in the presence of ozone. Fantastic visual evidence and shockingly in such a short time period, not to mention the award winning performance. Thanks Jason.

Interesting. Question. I have a similar cleaner and use it every other day. When I got lazy for six months or so and was only using the ozone cleaner every other week or so but still cleaning the mask and tubing just not running the ozone thru the machine it got a sour smell coming thru and was gross. I then doubled down on cleaning until it went away and now back to the every other day schedule. I'm now worried about the external parts because I can and do get regular shipments of them when they are due since my healthcare provider sends them to me on a regular basis but how am I supposed to clean the inside of the machine with out the ozone treatment? I use distilled water in the tank and the tank is dried everyday the filter is changed once a week. Its keeping the sour smell out of the system. Thanks for any reply in advance.

I'm interested in this too. I got an ozone machine and have only ever used it on my tubes and mask; I've never hooked it up to my machine. Occasionally I get a weird smell for the first few seconds, but it goes away. I always run a mask fit test on my Airsense 10 for a minute or so (with out wearing it) to force air thru the tubings. I figured that since I get a new nasal cushion every month it'd be OK.

I don’t have any of those purchased cleaners. Glad to know about them. Not worth the money that I don’t have anyway, so I’m not missing anything. BUT.. cleaning is more than just washing off the Oils from your skin. Should have known better, but I wasn’t told how important it was to keep the equipment clean. I didn’t clean any of it for several months when I first got my Cpap. With air flowing at me, I figured it didn’t need cleaning. One day I had a terrible what I thought was an allergy attack. My throat closed off & I couldn’t breath. I ended up going to the emergency room& they didn’t help one bit. I thought I was going to die!!! I realized later that it was because I was not cleaning my equipment. Germs grew in there. It took a long time for my voice box & throat to heal. I kept getting a tickle in my throat & it felt like I was going to have another attack.

I purchased the So Clean not long after I got my Bi-pap. There is a little smell after you use it. That was no big deal but then I couldn't put my mask on without coughing. I totally gave up. Then I remembered every time I walked through the bedroom with the So Clean running I would cough. I have asthma and copd and wondered if there was a connection. From what I have read ozone can irritate and maybe damage the lungs and was terrible for people with lung issues. I personally would never use it again. I'm still not great with the bi-pap but am much better than when I used the So Clean. It may not bother some I'm sure but It definitely did me.

Being totally blind, I of course couldn’t see what you saw. All I can go by is the fact I have been using So Clean with my Rez med machine since October 2018 and every time I take everything in to be checked, it is fine. I like using it because I don’t have to try to clean the tubing with water and then hope I get it all out. This way, I know it’s clean. It smells clean, it feels clean, and when I have a sighted person check it, it is always clean. It may not be the best way to do things, but sometimes for some people, it’s the only way. If you have a suggestion for me to try, please let me know.

I was wondering if you placed an ozone remover in the hole, would it have changed the amount of ozone exposure over the 30+ days (less), because the Machines actually have a device to make sure the ozone gas is slowly removed from the chamber that is sterilizing the equipment over a 2 hour period. In other words, it does not just sit in this high ozone gas area without releasing the ozone gas. Also, you need to check the machine in the ozone environment over a once a day use vs. two times a day as you did. Thank you for your assistance.

I started getting horrible sinus and bronchial infections after starting on a CPAP. I did not put 2 and 2 together to understand it was my CPAP causing them. This went on for a couple of years until I bought a SoClean. I have never had another bad infection since. Yes it yellows the silicone, so what. I had my Resmed S9 for over 7 years, 5 of which I had used a SoClean and it was still going strong. I just recently upgraded to the S10 because I was afraid to risk being without my CPAP. The home medical was surprised my S9 was still going good and had not given a end of life message. I wear min CPAP religiously so it gets a lot of use. One thing I discovered was to not allow the rubber end of the hose to be inside the SoClean. It will cause the rubber to get weak and not fit tight on the short hose to my FX Nasal mask. Once I started to only put the mask with as little hose as possible in the tank, I don't have any trouble. I understand that Ozone is dangerous but there is a two hour "dissipation" period and I make a point to take mine out as soon as I can to give it even more time to breath. I also run my machine for 10-15 seconds before I put it on to help flush any possible residual gases. For me the sanitation factor is worth any possible CPAP life expectancy degradation. I just know I went from at least 2 horrible infections a year down to zero.

I got a soclean and I havent used it yet. But I did some research and it turns out that you're still supposed to wipe the equiptment off with a CPAP wipe or something to get the oils and biological materials off before using the SoClean. I felt ripped off because I thought I could just turn on the SoClean and go but its solely for killing bacteria and you still need a good routine for cleaning your machine. The only reason I got the SoClean was to eliminate the need to wash my stuff. But I guess it doesnt do that. Lesson learned to do research before I buy.

It seems to me that the test was somewhat extreme. Daily ozone application for over a month without taking the equipment from the box and allowing it to sit in a normal air environment. I have been using the soclean machine with the F20 cushion for over a year and have seen no visible breakdown of either the cushion (change every 2 months) or the Airsense 10. A simple wipe down with a non alcoholic wipe for the cushion and pop it into the soclean. Just my thought on the matter.

You need to look at the inside of your machine after a year of using ozone on it. Ozone destroys rubber. Ozone is highly reactive. If you live in an area of high air pollution (ozone levels and Sulfates) you will notice that the lawn chair webbing will start to deteriorate due to high ozone in the ambient air and high sulfate levels in the air. I had a Philips machine and had to have it replaced due to the recall. I never used ozone technology to clean the machine. But I bet that some people did and that is why the sound proofing fell apart inside these machines. My background is air pollution control and I'm an environmental scientist.

  • @carolapczynski6854

Running the ozone 2 x per day, without opening the box may have resulted in more ozone exposure than wveryday use. Foam breakdown inside the machine is more of a concern than cushion and mask yellowing because those are replaced quarterly.
