This is a fantastic vid mate and the take-home message is spot on (tube size matters in the setting). I noticed there was also a change in therapy mode from fixed cpap at 13cm to Auto. On Auto he had a Med pressure of 10cm (25% less pressure) which dramatically improved the leak rates which might have contributed to the improved results also. Setting the tube at 12 vs 22 would have contributed to the high leak rates seen in cpap mode . If the mask seal was good, setting the tube at 12 vs 22 in CPAP mode would likely improve apnea control as there's an increase in the flow to overcome the extra tube resistance etc, but on this occasion, the extra flow resulted in high mask leaks and reduced apnea control. Keep up the great work buddy

Thanks so much for this info. I recently changed my resmed heated tubing (slimline) for a shorter Sunset unheated tube. It's a fat hose. I didn't know about how the size of the rube would cause problems. So now I'm back to the slimline. I'm going to stick with it even if I hate having to deal with all the unnecessary extra length of hose.

I've been using a CPAP for years and I have NEVER been shown this information about tubing or how it is set on my machine (same as you show in video). My old CPAP supplier had me using one of those "dumb' tubes. It wasn't until they pissed me off (separate issue all together) and I changed suppliers that I was given one of the 'smart' tubes. My sleep quality never changed, that I'm aware of.

When I got a new CPAP machine in late July, as my former Philips unit was on the don't use recall and 5+ years in service, it was a new ResMed 10. When I picked it up it had an unheated tube. It was ok but the heater didn't work properly. The replacement tube was a heated one, with the electrical connector in the back, I presume that was the correct hose and would allow for the auto adjustment for the hose diameter. It does work better with the right hose.

This vid might have just saved me massive aggravation. I have been on a trial for almost a month and it's been hell. I watched this last night, found out my tubing setting was slim when in fact it wasn't. I changed the setting and it was the first night the res10 didn't wake me up blowing so much air in my face it didn't leak and wake me up. I'm optimisticly looking forward to the remaining 5 nights left in my trial before I'm put on my own res11

I am a Vet with sleep apnea. I have had a CPAP since 2017. Never once has my VA sleep specialist reviewed this data with me. All they care about is daily compliance. My problem is that even when my humidity is set to mid-range I run out of water after just a few hours of sleep. No leaks, climate tube. And they don't seem to have an answer other than no when I ask about a larger tank.

You can usually get a new machine every 5 years, when you replace your machine you may be able find one with a bigger tank. I sometimes need to add water to the tank when I get up to go to bathroom, so I keep the water next to bed on shelf under machine. My travel machine is about one third as big as my RESMED and the water tub is also small.

I am a vet and the VA is so busy they aren’t able to help with the fine tuning. I was diagnosed in 2017, they gave me a machine and a few masks to try. I have been super compliant, until recently a few weeks. All the sudden I have claustrophobia. I asked for another sleep study, they said no and told me to increase my pressures. I ended up buying an airsense 11 out of pocket. I am also waiting for the bleep eclipse to come in. I watch videos and try adjusting my machine.

I was issued a ResMedAS11+Climate tubing (15mm). But between the end of the ClimateLine hose and my face, they had daisy-chain installed a fat (22mm) dumb hose. At my first hardware swap , I "lost" the neutral 22mm tube "in transit". (They took it back.) So comfort obviously went out the window, as the velocity of the air going up my nose was overwhelming. The 22mm segment served to soften the impact of what was blowing in the wind. Took me a while to put 2 and 2 together, but I got the hang of it. What I learned today from this video was that the AS11 would have no idea what my tube situation was beyond the end of the Smart ClimateLine without a manual settings change. (And indeed, when you've got a 15 then a 22, what DO you do? Obviously, nothing , because the settings will not be available for manual adjustment anyway with a ClimateLine installed.) Two big learns today. Thanks.

Ho(s) or Hose - I have no idea my sleep is generally good, but I have more problems with overtightening mask especially after it is about 1/2 worn out. I am on APap and high side is at 19inches of water pressure. I use standard tubung and the settings do not change. I did learn something about the settings - I will have to see if my Aircurve does this as well.

This video was helpful for understanding the importance of the correct setting in the machine. I have one concern with my setup. I have a 6 ft length of 19mm tubing from the Resvent iBteeze. But I bought a nasal pillow that comes with about 18in of 15mm tubing attached. Do I need to replace my 19mm tubing to match the 15mm on the nasal pillow? Also my machine settings for tube type are 19mm, 15mm, 15 PM2.5, 19 PM2.5. I can't figure out the meaning of PM2.5.

I can add one more issue regarding tube. I case your tube is in wrong possition for example it goes from CPAP machine to floor and to your CPAP mask it gives strange noises like blowing air through straw into a glass full of water. Noise appears after 3 houers and is so nasty it wakes me up! It drives me nuts! I came that the reaseon behind this is moisture air condenses inside tube in part where hose is on the floor. When I pull it up and everything what's insde the hose goes back into tank again it stopes doing those noises. Mayby it can help to someone if such problem appear. Good lock with your CPAP therapy!

Any way to fix the air leaks. I have like air leaks coming from the side or top of the nose area once in a while and it wakes me up. It's like the mask wants to do a fart kinda thing. I noticed over the last week (I'm still in trial period until next week), that the air pressure has lessened. I have the slim line tubing. Wondering if the tube has a hole in it or something. My ResMed does not have a tube type setting option -- only for Temp which doesn't help because the air is still so hot and dry even at 60 degrees.. I CAN"T STAND IT. I even put ice in the reservoir to keep the air cool. I have a full face mask and had it on for a total of 9 hours last night with no or little leak, and my events still increased from 0.2 to 0.9. ???? Do I have a defective machine? Does this tubing easily crack ?

Does Slimline tubing (with the correct setting) reduce the life of the machine? As you say, the machine has to push more air through the narrower tube to achieve a given pressure level for the patient, so the machine is working harder, correct? And if it works harder, night after night, then the machine's lifespan will shrink a bit, correct? Regardless of whether Slimline tubing impacts machine lifespan, does it also impact therapy? I like the slimline form factor better than standard 22mm tubing. If I switch to Slimline (and adjust the settings on my machine correctly), will I get exactly the therapy I'd get with 22mm tubing (again, assuming correct settings)? Many thanks. I discovered your channel today and already I've watched a bunch of your videos and I'm smarter for it. (Well, not smarter, unfortunately, but i learned some really useful stuff from your videos). Love the cat videos!

The Resmed mask p10 has a smaller attachment tube, should I be worried if it's connected to a 22mm tube, should it be connected to a slimmer tube?

The tube isn't technically 22mm, that's the standard size for the ends (aka the cuffs). Standard is 19mm (sometimes wrongly called 22mm) or 15mm (Philips) and slimline can come in 15mm (Resmed) or 12mm (Philips).

Thank you for information. Is there a special CPAP machine for both obstructive sleep apnea 56% and central sleep apnea 40% or will the machine you are using in this video work?

Yes. It's an ASV. Adaptive Servo Ventilation. Sometimes the people that score studies are a little bit stupid in tagging Central Apneas...or it was from a home type 3 study....in which case they're definitely false. Without looking at actual data I don't know.

Hi Jason, I have been using a ResMed Lumis 150 ST-A VPAP NIV, with litre of oxygen I no longer need oxygen just the NIV, I have been using ClimateLine Air Oxy tubing and when I was taken off the oxygen, I switched to the ClimateLine Air tubing, but the next morning I switched back to the ClimateLine Air Oxy tube and just capped the oxygen port. Is the ClimateLine Air tube only only available in the 15mm, or is also available in standard 22mm? Thanks for any help you can give me and keep up the great work 👍

My wife uses a 22mm but it adapts to a slim line short piece. Should she purchase new parts to make is consistent all the way to the mask (Actually nose piece)?

I gave up on my CPAP. It was OK at first, except that I couldn't get to sleep without something like Ambien to knock me out. At one annual visit, the doc said I hadn't been using it at all, when in fact I had. While awake I could keep my mouth shut, but when I was asleep the air pressure blew my mouth open and all the air rushed out. I asked for a full face (nose+mouth) mask and that just inflated my lungs and I had to fight to breath out.

I had the same problem so I bought some Nexcare gentle paper tape to keep my lips closed. Just a small 1” wide piece across the center of my mouth is all it took to keep the air in. Your mileage may vary, but is was the solution for me.

I use a chin strap over my headgear. Keeps everything nice and tight and locked down. Took a while to find the right one but worth the trial and error.

Sounds like you may need a bi-pap instead of Cpap. Bi-pap lowers the pressure when you breath out. I used a cpap for 15 years, but my new lung Dr switched me and I sleep better with new machine.

I had trouble 3 other times over 25 years complying with CPAP. Went for a 4th sleep study after docs and dentist insisted. The hospital tech had to stop the study to try to mask me up. That was the beginning of someone realizing regular masks and CPAP cannot be used I am like drowning. They found a BiPap to use for remainder of the study that they tinkered with. They said I need 2 different pressures one inhalation one exhalation. When I picked up the machine the rep told me to try 5 different masks. He wanted me to get nasal pillow but as a mouth breather 😮 I kept wrecking the pressure and still would have high number of events. So I started with combo mask where the connection to air is thru a clip at the top of my head instead of pressing over my nose and mouth. The machine is actually adjusting pressure. Complied every single day. First time ever. ✔️ Work to find a good doc or tech to help you. It is hard to feel rested without the machine now. Naps are not refreshing if not using BiPap unit. 🤷‍♀️🙏 It's sometimes annoying to have to get geared up to go to sleep, but it is worth it every time. Good luck.

The f&p sleep style machine has no adjustment in the menu for tube size. So, does the machine automatically adjust, or are you not supposed to use anything but the heated hose or a 22 mm hose? I've only had it for 3 days, and I have been using the unheated hose 22 mm. I haven't been able to find an answer to this question anywhere

I have an issue with my cpap causing me extremely dry throat. I use distilled water and get a new hose every 6 months and replace my mask yearly. You got any tips or recommendations? I recently stop using my machine because I keep getting sick and everyone thinks I have covid.
