Narratively, Ueno is the voice for Shoko and Shouta's darkest feelings. The thought that he's only pretending to play friends, that he hasn't changed. The thought that she makes everyone around her miserable, that she shouldn't have been born. Of course she's a character that people like to hate---its the part of our main characters that they hate most about themselves. By extension, their acceptance of her at the end is an acceptance of the insecurities that they've been running away from all this time

I never thought about her like that. I liked her character for that scene on ferry wheel, when she talks honestly about why she dont like Shoko. And its her to whome Shoko admits that she hate herself.

Though she annoys me, the person I actually hated was the other girl. She was always trying to pass the blame to everyone else and pretend like she barely did a thing, such people are worse than a poison because they are the type that even in adulthood they'll never own up to their own wrongs and it's infuriating how they're usually the type to gaslight others in relationships too..

To be honest Ueno is one of my favorite characters, early in the movie she was a nice girl she is one of the first person that actually helped nishimya, i dont know if it showed in the movie but in the manga because Ueno helped Nishimya so much that she actually fell down for her studies, she didnt get that much good notes because of her. thats when she started hating nishimya, if you look at Ueno perspective she didnt hate nishimya because she was deaf she hates her because nishimya hate herself, she keeps saying sorry even though it wasnt her fault. when Ueno push her in the fence listen on what Ueno saying "are trying to play a tragic Heroine? "You think if you disappear will solve anything?" "I hate you because you only used your brain"

in the novel ueno also takes care of her unemployeed grandpa and her 3 siblings. she has to work to provide for them from a young age on top of doing her student duties and home chores. So she feels jealous towards Nishimiya because everyone makes or at least try to make her life easy because she is "simply" deaf. which is a really pure feeling to have , specially when you are a kid. And if you think about it, if they hadnt make her go physical (to emphasize how much she dislikes nishimiya) a lot more people would be more empathetic towards her@@BlueIceBlizzard

Sad little detail: when Nishimiya leaves the festival early, Shoya signs/tells her "see you later," but she doesn't respond in kind, instead signing "thank you." She wasn't planning on seeing him again later (or at all, for that matter).

Kawai makes me so fkn mad, so narcissistic and always victimised herself. During the choir scene when she faked singing so that Nishimiya would make a mistake, and then she could help her for next time, I got so damn pissed off because everything she does is just to improve her own image, even at the expense of others.

Kawai always annoyed me the most. She pretends she was never involved years later and that SHE was a victim. But she never spoke out for Shoko or Shoya, she never rebuked them for bullying, and even participated at times. If you aren't a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem, and she is in denial.

  • @rabid_si

It goes beyond that. Kawai is the kind of person who helps perpetuate or even instigates others actions in an underhanded way so that she can look good in comparison. She eggs on the others as they mock the outsiders, both laughing with them and half-heartedly admonishing them verbally. She purposefully sabotages Nishimiya in choir because she notices that Shoko is essentially watching the others to cue her in as to when she should start to sing and mimes starting to sing to trip her up and embarrass her only to turn it around and make it look like she's trying to help her out. She's the epitome of using other people's misfortune as a tool to further her own image. Even at the end of the movie, when she's giving her "Everyone goes through hardship" spiel, she's doing it through crocodile tears into Shoko's shoulder while she stares blankly ahead like "The fuck this bitch sayin'? I'm deaf!" because it isn't for Shoko's benefit, it's entirely performative empty platitudes and aimed at everyone else there.

Another thing, SHE was the one who started it all. You know in the choir scene, Kawai started miming early, making Nishimiya sing early. She maybe wasn't as persistent with the bullying as others, but she's not innocent of it either

Speaks volumes on how powerful this movie is, cos it resonates with so many different people. Communication and understanding the struggles and inperfections of others. Shoko is the central point with her disability, but every one of the characters are dealing with their own issues that influence how they act. I highly recommend the manga as it gives much deeper insight to what the other characters are going through. Due to this being only movie length, it makes sense they decided to keep the focus on the redemption journey for Ishida and his connection with Shoko. Its just a shame the other characters are left sidelined. Many people came to hate Ueno (black hair girl) cos of her behavior and a lack of true understanding behind it. Don't get me wrong, she isn't justified in how she treats Shoko and other people, but she is just as human with her own priorities and desires. Reading the manga may not change anyone's hate for her, but it certainly did for me. I still really don't like her as a person, but I did find satisfaction understanding where she is coming from. She is biased, selfish and aggressive. But she doesn't hide her feelings behind a facade. You definitely know where she stands with you, there can never be any misunderstanding. However its not that she isn't capable of kindness, she just won't show it to people she doesn't like or respect.

In Japan they often fold origami cranes and give them to someone who is hospitalized in hopes that they will become better soon. ”According to Japanese tradition, folding 1,000 paper cranes gives a person a chance to make one special wish come true. The crane is believed to live for 1,000 years and that is the meaning behind the 1,000 an individual needs to fold”. The first time I and many others heard about this is from the story ”Sadako And The Thousand Paper Cranes”, fair warning though, it most likely will make you cry.

This is my favorite movie of all time, it has a special place in my heart because it reached me in one of my loneliest and lowest moments in my life, and the message of keep on living not only for one self but for others too, to be helped living and to help live someone else hit me so hard, also because I have been on both sides of bullying and it helped me realize how awful that is. The manga also expands way deeper for some of the scenes and it helps to visualize from others points of view. This, at least for me, truly is one of the best stories ever made. So many feelings encountered in a little spam of time.

That was beautiful. Thank you so much for your thoughts. I agree with everything that you said. The creators had to have experienced bullying and mental illness in some form or another, because as you said, the way it is portrayed in this movie is SO real. This is my favorite movie of all time. I relate to it on so many levels. Mental illness has been a major struggle for me throughout my life, but also, my eldest brother is deaf and was bullied a lot throughout school and in his work life. My little four year old niece is deaf as well, and I pray that she will be able to find a few good friends who will stay by her and help her through her school life. On a less serious note, it's fun to watch this movie and see how Japanese Sign Language differs from American Sign Language. I personally find it fascinating. Anyway, great reaction! Thank you so much for this video!

I became a lot like this guy. I was not a bully. But i used to be quite populair in middle school. I was loud, a clown, annoying to teachers and had quite the mouth on me. In highschool I was bullied to the point where i stopped being loud and energetic, i stopped laughing. I spend alot of my highschool years in my room, went to school just enough to not be in trouble. I got into a eating disorder and was really skinny and got bad acne which also became a bully topic. My personality died down and as the pain grew over the years i shut that out too just to be able to keep breathing. But at one point i found myself just doing that. It wasnt just school, i had problems at home too just didnt know it because it was all i knew. Got forced into therapy after my suicide plans were discovered. I discovered i had gotten depression and social anxiety for hiding from the world for so long, just like this kid in the movie. I used to be someone else once, its a shame what i lost. I am 25 now going to the gym and working two jobs because i like traveling the world. After 10 years of constantly feeling the same old pain that seems to have lost reason to be here. I can say that i found ways to make it hurt less but its still in the back of my mind like its waiting to strike. But i came to far to go back to that place, giving up now would be a shame to all the years i spend building and fighting to just stop now. But just the fact that the things some people said to me 10 years ago still haunt me today. They stopped bullying me iver a decade ago but i am still here repeating all those words for them in my head. And i wonder if they know what they did to me... ofcourse they dont. I have to live with this for the rest of my life because you cant undo what happened. But i try my best to make the best of it.

I don't want a second movie. This movie stands alone enough. I can't describe it, it is literally my life turned into a movie. Some people call it karma, it isn't karma. It is human. The feeling of regret you get after doing something terrible to someone just for fun, is poisonous. It will destroy you slowly. It will take down all of your qualities, in the end your ability to mix with other people. I was about to jump but I didn't. Something stopped. I wanted to apologize. I didn't want to fix everything because I can't but I wanted them to know that my soul is broken and I am sorry. The first time watching this movie was hard for me, I couldn't finish it. Took me about 3 days.

In the cute bit towards the end, Ueno, while trying to sign "baka" (dumbass), ended up signing the nonsensical "haka." We saw Shouko help Ueno fix that by properly sliding Ueno's hand sideways to change "ha" to "ba" and end with a clean demonstration of how to sign "dumbass" in JSL.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is such a masterpiece and has SOOO many lessons to learn from. Its such an easy way to show people what "broken" people look like from a 3rd person perspective. Where its easy to overlook at the fact that everyone around you is broken. Its easy to think you're the only one going through issues and to feel alone, but even the feeling of feeling alone means you're not alone, because there are many other people who feel the same way you do. You just need to meet the right friends or girlfriend/boyfriend, because then you guys can grow and improve together which makes things a lot more easy when you got someone you can lean on and it makes you feel good when people lean on you. The main character found his self worth from becoming someone that is leaned on by another. The problem was the person leaning on him wasn't getting that back. Only they were leaning on him and he wasn't leaning on her. It made her feel like a burden to him which is exactly how she has felt her entire life with her hearing impairment and that caused her to to want to kill her self to no longer feel like a burden to anyone. So when he said on the bridge after getting out of the hospital i want you to help me live that was the exact thing she needed to hear from someone this whole time. Then she proceeded to help him face rooms full of people. Help him face the girl who hates her and much more. There is still even more going on in the movie then what i pointed out, but this comment is already long enough. Seriously incredible movie and watching it multiple times makes you realize more and more about the movie and how every little detail means something. The opening scene alone with fireworks stopping him from jumping off a bridge while later in the movie he falls saving the girl while fireworks are going.

Yoshitoki Oima is the genius behind this Masterpiece, these mangaka actually created two masterpieces, 'A Silent Voice' and 'To Your Eternity' which I think you should definitely check out, and let's not forget Naoko Yamada, a genius director who had done work on some wonderful shows such as 'Clannad'. Yamada conveys characters emotions with the up most respect and most of it is shown not through the use of dialogue but with the beautifully subtle visuals of the film. This film really hits close to home for me.. out of all the animes I've watched Ishida is the character that I relate to the most, the end sequence where Ishida finally looks at the world is what got me, I've definitely teared up watching other animes but that scene got me really crying because of how I relate so much with that scene..

This anime hit me so hard because I was bullied at school and at home so I lived thinking nobody liked me and everyone laughed at me. At the end of freshman year people just started talking to me and wanting to be my friend. That’s when I healed. But watching this now at 34 got me so depressed I was literally numb for a while because of all the sadness and memories I had locked away. My wife was so worried but I got thru it with her help. I think that’s why I am so compassionate and understanding towards other people. I don’t want to hurt others the way that I was hurt.

I absolutely love this story. It's so well told, the characters feel so real, and their struggle with their own insecurity and self-loathing hits just right. There's no villain, just people going through the realest shit of their lives and trying their best to deal with it the best way they know how, until they realize they don't *have* to deal with it alone. Shouta and Shoko are such a good example of that. It's not until their both faced with losing someone that means the world to them that they see how foolish they've been and how they can help each other get past it. Life likes to kick us when we're down, but it's a lot easier with someone to pick you up when you fall.

Sure I had friends in school but I only felt normal when I was alone, my physical appearance was enough of a deterrent for bullies; when they see a big guy take down 3 football players as a freshman they get the hint. Being an introvert was already bad enough I also have a strong sence of empathy which was why I decided in high school to be indifferent as much as I could as a emotional defense.

The love confession ( Moon) scene always gets me for few things. The first thing it reminds me of is sophomore year of HS it started with a honor roll field trip for this health & hospitality program I was In. The trip was to Universal Studios my original intention was to venture on my own than in a group, next thing I know some one calls out my name as I was leaving some group of seniors from my math class. Which leads me to the confession part of the story, for those 10 hrs at the park I spent the hole time with this senior girl I never really talk to; even though she sat behind me in one my classes. 10 hrs she kept me by her side every ride, tour, and the 3hr bus ride home she sat next to me falling to sleep in my arms. Happiest I ever remember feeling; it was a Friday. Monday after class she confesses that she loves me and wants to be my girlfriend. I told her no because this was reality and Quasimodo doesn't get the girl; especially one that looks like a young hispanic Angelina Jolie. She continued to ask me out again even in front of other people and making sure to leave lipstick kisses on my face and clothes, all of which I disregarded. Did I make the right choice? I made the one I cold live with. I thought I seen a woman that looked her a few years ago before covid, she was pregnant and looked happy. The 2nd thing the scene reminds me of one particular girl I graduated. From sophomore year to graduation I had classes with the same students 25 girls 5 guy including me since we were in the same program that had its own teachers. Since the first day I seen her I liked her the only things I knew about her are from what I've seen she was beautiful, kind, outgoing, she brought warmth into a room. No other woman I've ever had a crush on made me feel the way I did when I would see her which was something I didn't want. I never wanted to feel anything or express my feelings. I think you call it genophobia fear of emotional or sexual intimacy. It forced me to try and keep are reactions with each other as minimal as possible and it was working at the beginning; she probably thought it was because of what I was dealing with the senior girl but Jr year she noticed confronted me one day. Once a week our Jr year our program allowed students to do off site training in a future career during school hrs we go to 1st period leave In school vans returning for last period. We would take the same van together that's when she noticed, one of the days when we stopped for lunch before going back to school she confronted me asking me why I didn't like her and want to talk her. I just sat there looking out the car window thinking of what to say. I don't remember how long we sat their just that it felt like hrs; it couldn't have been more than 10-15 min. Finally I told her that what ever the thinks it's not what I feel about her that I never hated her that's all I got out before we were interrupted. We started talking a little more from that point on but I think she could tell it did make me feel uncomfortable. That when I did something I've never done before or haven't since; last day of scholl Jr year I wrote her a letter and gave it to her asking to wait for after school to read it & it was for alone before heading to my last period of that day in the Gym. The letter said everything about how I felt about her since the first day we met, that it has never changed; I'm not asking her to like me back but to just let me deal with how I feel about her my own way until I graduate. I figured I'd take the summer and deal with it the last thing I was expecting was to see her show up in the gym having read the letter already. I could tell she was looking for me, she tried following me when she thought I didn't see her. Going into our SR year was difficult her knowing how I felt going out of her way to try and get me to talk about it some how randomly getting grouped together for every class project I honestly just wanted to leave school I had enough credits to graduate half way through the year but they didn't let you take government & economics In the same semester. Avoided going to prom so I didn't have to see her with her older boyfriend; ended up going out of town for graduation party for one of my cousins had a few drinks made some mistakes with an older women. Decided on what to do on grad night spent the night hanging out with the one girl I ever new how I felt about her exploring Disneyland making some good memories before saying goodbye. Honestly I can't know where I was going with my telling you this? Maybe don't be like me you still have time find someone who makes you happy. Just be happy.

this is my favorite movie of all time... i saw it maybe 20 times and still manage to makes me cry each time. such a beautiful and great movie. this is the kind of movie who should be watch in school. Redemption is possible if you want it. each time i saw that movie i just want to give a big hug to Nishimiya. She's so adorable. The manga give so much more detail about her life such as how her father abandonned her pregnant mother and her. Or why Shoko's sister cut her hair short. And the manga end further in the story.

Yes, and it's mirrored again later in the movie when Shoya and Shoko are out together and he trips and slides down the concrete. She reaches out and just misses him as he slides away. So later when we see him trying to save her from jumping off the building we have those two misses in our minds and we're heartbroken that it won't be enough again. But it is.

I just turned 40 and still have massive social issues. The last part I feel like I can be myself. My issue is I don’t feel like I have anything worthwhile to bring to the table as far as conversations. I’m sure there’s something deeper than that also but I can’t figure out how to break out of that and now I’ve been a truck driver for four years now over the road still doesn’t help the situation either.

I love this movie. When I was a kid I got bullied a lot because I was that fat kid in the class. Aka. easy target. Then unfortunately at some point I started to bully others "weaker" than me to project it. Its something I need to own. And this movie teached me to. I had a big ol' healing cry afterwards.

I like this movie a lot, and I relate with Ishida on a lot of levels. I have always been outgoing on the outside but I have a lot of confidence issues, and I question my life time to time. I had someone I knew in high school that I wouldn't say we were close at all, but I still consider him a friend. I never knew what he was going through cause I never saw it or seen the signs. And I regret one of the last things I said in a topic we spoke about, like a few days before. We talked about suicide (I don't remember how we got on that subject), and I said, "It's the cowards way out." I feel horrible that i said something like that to someone who was hurting. He would then shoot himself one morning, and I wonder how it would have been if he had never done that.

Please, definitely consider reading the manga. It's now available in a 2-volume hardcover collectors' edition. They did SUCH an amazing job with the film (it's literally my favorite movie!), but there was quite a lot cut, including a whole chapter from Shoko's perspective.

Please forgive me if the words are a little strange due to Google translation. 44:00 What Kawai-san and Mashiba-kun gave to Shoya is a gift unique to Japan called "Senbazuru"= "Thousand Paper Cranes". Also, if you haven't seen it yet, "Your Name", which was produced at the same time as this movie, is also a popular work. 42:13 you are right👍

So the present they gave shoya was meant to be a thousand paper cranes. They make a gift like that for someone who's been sick or injured as cranes are thought to be mystical creatures that can live for a thousand years. Onecrane for every year. The people who make the cranes make a wish when theyre finished and usually the wish is that the person who's struggling with their health will recover and live a long life.

I bought the manga - and I bought the super nice (outstanding example of quality book) hardcover - I asked for Part 2 for Christmas and got it. It takes a couple chapters to read it easily backward; and to get the flow of what to read next, but once I got going it was well worth the effort. Much more background - can send you excerpts if you want. The girl who gives the speech hugging her, the guy watching (and everyone) notices she is talking over the shoulder of a deaf person - so it is all "presentation" (in the manga, he says "niki, you are a kind person ... " and she beams back at him, "yes, I am!" .. and her friend signs her "I will tell you what she said later". One morale I took from it is to be grateful in a sense to be able to BE AWARE and then learn from that awareness to change for the better going forward. Most have been bullied in some manner, and if honest, we are ashamed for ignorance of our younger selves for hurting unintentionally. A series you might enjoy because it is "how you wish high school really was" is the K-ON! series - which this Director made is outstanding.

It was a manga first and as much I love the movie (this is one of only 4 films that have made me cry) the manga goes into so much more detail. Explains the dark hole imagery at the end way better. Explains why Kawaii is actually the worst and Ueno is just jealous. I love the movie but I really do with it was a show instead. They'd have the time to break it down more. Either way. Great reaction. ❤😂

yeah in the manga we even saw Ueno saying that she loves him. Kawaii is just an hypocrite and in the manga the teacher even say to Hishida that he understand why he acted like that. We even know why Nishimiya's mother is alone and how her husband left her. This movie is my favorite movie of all time. i have a big poster in my room and 4 smaller of that movie.

@@francoislaroche6687 this is the biggest reason why despite my love for the movie I really do think it should have been a 25-50 episode anime. It could have explored all of the characters. Actually showed Ueno care about Ishida and understanding her emotions for him and accepting that she's jealous of the relationship that Ishida and Shoko have. It could explore Shoko's mother and why she's so prone to violence. Most importantly it could show the EXTREME negligence of the teachers while the bullying of both Shoko and Ishida was happening and all of them did nothing until it went too far. It could also better explain the dark hole Ishida felt he was in and it would make the ending showing the light at the end of the dark hole mean so much more. Also it would show how terrible and manipulative Kawaii is. Especially when it comes to when she exposed Ishida for his past bullying. In the movie she just does it for no reason.
