The teacher was the actual villain here and I'm saying that as a teacher myself. he knew about everything and did nothing, he was completely checked out. Shoya didn't understand what he was doing, he was just a kid. he knew what he was doing but he didn't understand it like we do, that's the difference between kids and us. he was fascinated by Shoko when she first came but didn't bully her at all. he only started to bully her after he saw how others began to get mean to her. he wanted attention and when he bullied her everyone laughed and that's why he kept going, he got the attention he wanted. All the kids that laughed at his antics reinforced his actions. they might not have bullied her directly but they certainly weren't without fault! bullying happens when the bully feels safe cuz no one protests their actions or others even reinforces it. just because you don't bully directly, doesn't mean you're not helping the bullies!

@@law4546 That's literally what I said, He knew what he was doing but he didn't understand it. knowing and understanding are different. he knows it's bad but he lacks the guidance(the teacher) and the life experience and maturity to understand how bad is it and why it's so bad! especially when you have a kid starving for attention, he really ignores thinking about his actions. Ever wonder why kids and teens do so many more unmistakably stupid things compared to adults? (not that adults are much better these days!)

The teacher didn't even tried to stop Shoya while being fully aware of the bullying, and only says anything when the principal is forced to get involved.

It's easy to miss how Miki was involved in the bullying, and fall for her playing victim. She's really good at it. But, in truth she was the first person to spark the bullying of Shoko. When they were in chorus, she purposely started mouthing before the song started, in order to trick Shoko to start before it was time. She then took that chance to seem like the hero, by pretending to help her. After that Ueno got annoyed that the chorus wasn't going to do well. And Shoya noticed Ueno was getting annoyed with Shoko, and started making fun of her. Miki liked having her there, because by making Shoko seem more pathetic, she could boost her own ego, and feel like the sole hero. And when Shoya tries to call her out for her actions, she quickly cries to victimize herself, to protect her image. Which she does again when they're older, and he tells her not to spread rumors.

Exactly! I hated her way more than I hated Naoka. To tell you the truth, I kind of pitied her because she really just wanted to impress Shoya like the stupid little girl she was. Then in her eyes, Shoko shows up and the group sort of split up. She was an absolute bitch to Shoko, and I fucking hated that. But I hated Kawaii (Miki) way more because all she was worried about was playing innocent hero and cried and wailed and accused. She was the biggest snake of them all.

Exactly, she is always overlooked, kinda perfectly fits her character, even the audience gets fooled. They were all bullies in their own way, the reason Ueno is a better person than Kawaii is that at least Ueno is honest, Kawaii loves to manipulate people to thinking she is a victim which you mentioned. And also to add on, the cranes Kawaii gave to Shoya, she made the whole class do it and never helped and takes credit for those cranes.

Yes, indeed. Miki is the true evil playing angel. I hated her the most. While Naoko looks terrible but she keeps telling Shoko not to apologize, express her true emotion. And deep inside Naoko always wanted true friends but just doesn't know how to be honest and brave enough to show it. At the end she signs moron. That's her way to show her wish to be close to Shoko. I am a bit sad because you two talk too much and look at each others faces too often, eyes off the monitor missing so many small but very important descriptions.

"I don't remember her doing anything" Wow you fell for her act pretty well. She not only did not stood up for Shouko, she kept on spotlighting how different Shouko was while pretending to help her, and prompted everyone including Shouya to look at her different. Then when things got out of hand, she threw Shouya under the bus.

I think the confession scene needs an explanation. So in Japanese, Moon and Love/like has similar pronunciation (Moon 月=Tsuki) (Love/like 好き=Suki) Shoko said Suki, because Shoko's pronunciation weren't really clear, Shoya misunderstood it as Tsuki :)

An example of one of the things Miki did was the choir scene at the start. She started mouthing the words before the right point in the music, making Shouko who couldn't hear the music think it was time to start. She then got act like the "nice" girl by offering to help Shouko. Most of Miki's bullying was really subtle like that. Naoko was nasty to Shouko's face, but Miki was nasty in secret and only pretended to be nice. She also paints herself to be the victim. Pretending to cry so that everyone would pity her and not believe she could be a bully. Loudly scolding Shouya for being a bully in front of her high school class to make everyone notice them and how "good" of a person she is for calling him out, in the manga it's clearer that she does this because the guy she likes hates bullies and she's trying to make him like her by provoking Shouya.

Moreover, all of the nice words she tells Shoko in the end, when Shoko tries to reach all of them, are actually all meant to let the others listening but Shoko herself. She didn't talk directly to her in a way she could read her lips, she was hugging her, that means that poor Shoko didn't catch a word of what she said. She was just playing the good righteous girl. In the manga it's even more clear how bad she actually is.

This is probably the best anime movie i've ever seen. It got me emotional.

The teacher was the worst in my opinion. He put all the blame on Shoya after turning a blind eye to his actions for months and knowing full well that a large portion of the class was involved in some way. He created a situation where Shoya became a pariah while everyone else who participated could minimize or deny their own involvement instead of taking responsibility. When I was in middle school I participated in the bullying of a classmate. My teachers pulled everybody who was involved aside and put us in lunch detention for about two weeks. Some of us at the time thought it was unfair because “I wasn’t *that* involved!” but we were all held accountable for our actions and we learned the lesson by the end of it. The movie teacher failed in his responsibility of an educator, enabling the bullying for months by ignoring it, then dropping the responsibility of everyone involved onto Shoya alone. The fact that Shoya pushed it the furthest is irrelevant and doesn’t give the rest of the class a pass.

I've read the manga, rewatched the movie tons of times. Wanna point out one thing. Understandable that anime only people would absolutely hate either Naoka or Kawai (blonde gal). But after reading the manga, i came to understand Naoka's upbringing more and why she does those things. There's more to the manga than it is in the movie adaptation. They went back to the elementary, explored more with Mashiba's character (orange haired guy), and showed scenes couple years in the future. Anyways, again, came to understand Naoka's reasoning behind her actions; not trying to justify em all tho cuz some are straight bitchy, but she came to accept Shoko in the future, and even worked with her a lot in their jobs. I'd like to point out tho, the absolute, rubbish, parasitic character of Miki Kawai (blonde girl). As ya'll noticed, she may have done nothing, physically, that justified that she bullied Shoko, but at the same time, she didnt stood with her, and joined others laughing at it as well, yet she, being the extremely narcissist girl she is, tried to do everything to get herself out of the problem. She even resorted to seeking Mashiba for protection, as well as spreading Ishida's past to him, all for the sake to get Mashiba to get closer to her. I think she's the one that should be thrown away from the group

@@ashpelt1yeah that’s because the movie focused more on Shoko and Shoya, and the manga focused on the group as a whole.

I think it was clearer in the manga, but the reason that he bullied her originally was because he noticed his friends didn't like her and slightly bullied her, so he thought he'd be cool doing the same. But he pushed far enough that there were consequences for him when there hadn't been for the other bullies. That's how I understood it anyway

The part about them saying she loves him and his thinking she said moon is because in Japanese the moon and love sound similar, it not really work well in the translation for Dub but thats what the reason is for his confusion.

At the bridge, in the Japanese version, Shouya actually says "I want you to help me live" instead of "I want you to teach me how to live." I think there is so much more power and intimacy in saying he wants her to "help him live" instead of "teaching how" to live. They are going to help each other live. (And then Shouko makes the sign for "pinky promise"). In Japanese he says "ano sa Nishimiya.. ore.. kimi ni ikiru no tetsudatte hoshii" and "tetsudatte" (from the verb "tetsudau" 手伝う) means something like "to help," "to lend a hand," "to assist." This is different from the verb "oshieru/oshiete" (教える) which means "to teach," "to say." So it's a completely different meaning (and a bad translation in my opinion).

This may be my favourite anime movie, one of my favourites full-stop. I've seen it so many times, and I discover something new every time. There's so much depth to it like you say - the amount conveyed in a single facial expression, or a shot of a bunch of flowers (one KZreadr has an entire video dedicated to the "flower language" evoked through the movie). And you can explore it from an angle of feeling shame versus feeling guilt, connecting to people whilst depressed or anxious, whether forgiveness from others necessarily leads to forgiving yourself - you could find something new with every rewatch. Thank you so much for watching this one. Brief notes - "suki" is love and "tsuki" is moon, hence the easy confusion (in Japanese). Shoko gave him garden decorations basically because she wanted to give a bouquet of flowers, but chickened out and went for the next best thing. Naoko is a biitch but is upfront about it and shows potential for change; Miki (blonde girl) is a vessel of bullshiit and crocodile tears, who denies any direct or indirect involvement with bullying to the end. But the teacher is worse than both of them as the main catalyst for the rest of the story, being too passive at first and then scapegoating Shoya when it wasn't just him. As I understand it, the sister never being revealed was essentially a running joke from the author of the original manga, though I'm not sure how the joke came about. Interestingly, in an industry still dominated by men, the manga writer, screenplay adapter *and* the director of ASV were all women.

I want to add up to the "moon" and "love" confusion. In Japanese culture, people often say "the Moon is beautiful" to indirectly say "I love you". Because in Japanese folklore, the Japanese Moon God is also worshipped as the God of Love. Another fun fact for you.

Miki Kawai (the blonde bespectacled girl) is as complicit to the bullying as the others, but imo she's the worst. She acts nice but laughs behind your back and didn't do anything to stop the bullying. Also notice in the choir scene, Miki actually mouthed early and Shoko took that cue so she started singing, then Miki stopped her and advised her to follow her, making her the "good girl". She cried when Shoya outed her to gain sympathy. She did that again when her image was getting threatened, so she revealed Shoya's secrets to the class and to her boyfriend. After that, she said sorry to Shoya only because her boyfriend Satoshi (orange hair) told her to do so (cool bro btw, he understands Shoya trying to make amends). Miki never owned her part in the bullying and only do things that preserve her good girl image. Naoka was a b*tch, but atleast she's honest and owned her part. Also initially, she was nice to Shoko, helping her out in her notebook. But when the teacher scolded her reading but a deaf girl gets a pass, from her pov, that's just like a special treatment. And again from her pov, Shoko's the reason why their gang fell apart. So you kinda understand where the hate and resentment towards Shoko comes from (although i'm not defending it). Suzy was correct when she said Naoka was trying to reconnect their gang (Kazuki and Shoya) the way Shoya's trying to reconnect to others.

I also believe in the light Novels Naoka is kinda obsessed with Shoya, like she likes him a lot, so she’s jealous of how close Shoko and Shoya are getting. I think a lot of people miss that she was always visiting Shoya in the hospital and making sure he was okay, not saying the other didn’t but it’s an insight into why she’s the way she is. I like the ending a lot with her because it’s the beginning of her turn around, so she’s still a b*tch, and mean, but to go as far as to learn the sign for stupid just to communicate with Shoko is a big step, and I think that’s why Shoko was so happy. This movie makes me like her character not cause she’s mean like that’s horrible but it’s a necessary evil when your telling stories like this you know

I didn't catch this until watching this time... Ueno thought/assumed that Shoko had told on them, about the hearing aids and etc abuse, and that's why the school principle had come to their classroom and they all got (or started to, until it got to Kawaii, who of course "saved" herself, and indirectly saved all of them, lol, except for Shoyo of course) into trouble... and that was the direct event that destroyed all of their friendships, as in getting exposed and called out like that, made it no longer popular, "bullying a poor sweet deaf girl", and thus everyone cut their ties with Shoyo, betraying him and stabbing him in the back, covering their own @$$E$.... so, that's why Ueno hated Shoko, as she thought Shoko had caused all of this by tattling on them of their abuse of her... yet... Shoko NEVER did tattle on any of them once, even with all of the expensive hearing aids, she lied and never told her mother what had happened to them or told about any of the abuse that she had done to her... but Ueno had never known this, and even if she did, in a weird way, it would just make Ueno more angry, as Shoko would be too good of a person (as indeed seen with shoko continually apologizing, it just made Ueno more and more angry, with her slapping Shoko up in the ferris wheel with her), and such a person isn't normal, Ueno could never accept that there are such (very few) people, who're not selfish and horrible, as she understands, that's just how people are, they're awful... and technically, Shoko was being very selfish, but that's a different discussion, that is way too big to get into here, lol --------- and you are totally right about Kawaii.... Kawaii is evil, she pretends to be a goody-two-shoes, and it's all about her own reputation and image, but she's the worst one of all (at least Ueno is direct and open with her own behavior and etc, she's not hiding and pretending in being something she's not), it's easy to miss, but Kawaii intentionally opens her mouth, to get Shoko to start singing too early, and then Kawaii pretends to be miss sweet-heart, saying to Shoko, to watch her, so that she sings at the right time, making herself look good in front of everyone, even though she intentionally set this all up, opening her mouth to get Shoko to sing too early, for the direct purpose of herself, of making herself look like such a wonderful person. Everything that Kawaii does is to make herself look better... the instant you start pointing out that she's a horrible person and a fake, she will throw you under the bus, even making up stuff, and she immediately goes into the "innocent crying poor girl" routine, too... using that to emotionally sway people to her side... go back and look at everything she does (and doesn't do), and you'll see that everything she does is to make herself look better in front of others...

@@justingabriel1765 Ueno constantly was spitting facts, as hard as some of them were, they were still facts... and then Shoyo spat even more facts, when his attempted re-friendship with all of them fall apart, describing each of them to a letter, who exactly they were and what their faults were, just listen to Ueno, and listen to Shoyo when he pushes everyone away, except for Shoko (though she's uncomfortable being their, as she thinks and blames herself for this all happening, with him losing all of his friends all over again, not knowing what was going on, between them and Shoyo, and no knowing what Shoyo was saying about all of them, either), and you'll understand everything about all of the horrible people/"friends" of Shoyo, whom never redeemed/atoned themselves... they're all truly evil... only Shoyo tried to atone and redeem himself, everyone else (Shoyo's "friends") are horrible monsters....

This movie was quite touching. Your Name filmmaker Makoto Shinkai even gave credit to A Silent Voice director Naoko Yamada for capturing that emotional impact smoothly. Like he was impressed that it’s something he couldn’t easily replicate.

A detail that unfortunately was cut out at 1:12:51 I found noteworthy. If you payed attention (or know ofc) to the sign language, you realize that the 'sideways V' means something along the lines of 'see you' - which she made a few times during the movie and he does it in this scene. However, she does not do that sign back to him, she chose another one which I interpreted at the time as 'good bye' (drawing a line). It was very likely done on purpose for the viewer to realize.

The "v" sign sideways literally means "again" in JSL, which is used to say "see you later." The signs that Shouko made when she was departing from the fireworks were "I'm all right" and "thank you." She did not sign "good bye," but given the context, she was effectively saying "good bye."

@@SlowNot You're welcome. In fact, I started learning JSL precisely because I wanted to know exactly what all the signs meant in this movie, even where the subtitles were provided and Shouya and Yuzuru were verbally translating.

I had to watch this movie 3 times because I couldn't finish it the first 2 time, the bullying scenes just hit too hard and brought back too many memories. This movie was absolutely fantastic, they do such a good job at the pacing and with the emotional roller-coaster all throughout it. Man, still shed tears every time.

Yes, when he misses Shoko's hand in the bridge is definitely an iconic moment lmao

The phrase "The Moon Is Beautiful, Isn't It?" is a other way of saying I Love You, which is the reason Shoya misinterpreted what she said to be about the moon. 月が綺麗ですね | tsuki ga kirei desu ne translates to “The moon is beautiful, isn’t it?” This phrase is a more poetic way of saying I love you. During Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki’s (1867-1916) teaching years, he supposedly overheard a student translating “I love you” rather awkwardly into its literal and direct translation: “Ware Kimi wo Aisu.” Soseki believed-as a product of his time and culture in the Meiji period-that this direct translation rejected Japanese sensibility. Thus, this more subtle, nuanced translation of “the moon is beautiful…” was born.

What a great movie. I do not think Shoko was only bullied because she was deaf but because she was quite passive and submissive which is easily seen as weak and despised. People, especially children are good at picking up these differences and sort people into groups. It is natural behaviour where the strongest lead and it is a constant battle. Like all of these children, Ueno has her problems, she does have a strong personality and simply cannot understand how some people can be different, and can be weak. The relationship between her and Shoko highlights the contrast between being too much and too little on the same scale. No one wants the burden of either someone who is overly-confident and full of themselves nor someone who always feels sorry for themselves.

The teacher is indeed at fault too, but you also have to remember that the most he can do is tell them to stop, punishing a grade schooler with admonishing and such will affect his career and the reputation of the school if the parents of those children complained. This is normal occurrence in our country (in SEA) not sure in western schools tho, most of the time people tend to ignore something 'light' if it doesn't affect them that much, unless it becomes too late and be a severe case, like when it got to the principal.

16:39 I think you missed the point here, lol. Everyone participated in the bullying. The teacher stood by and did nothing about it the whole time and then pins it all on Shouya. The teacher didn't stop the bullying. He just redirected it to another kid. Bullying is just a vicious cycle.

The thing is that everyone bullied her, but only The Protagonist gets the blame, cuz of "good" friends

Sometimes when people are suffering so much, you'll work so hard to comfort them for so long, and suddenly they'll become overjoyed, and you finally think it's over, that they're better, but reality they're happy because they've decide they'll never have to live through another day of the guilt and pain. When I was a teen that's what the girl I loved decided, and I thought after a year of giving every moment and every effort and thought she was finally recovering, but that night when I was holding her I didn't know what she had done and that night was the last I'd ever seen of her after the ambulance picked her up. Perhaps that scene alone is why this is my all time favorite movie, and why I tear up everytime I see it. I have a lady and a son now, but I'll never be without that guilt of what happened to such a beautiful and sweet person, who was just a kid when she made that choice. I have to live with it, and for awhile I was angry and blamed myself and hated myself and her for it, but long ago I realized why she did it and why she felt it was her only choice. It will always hurt and I wish with every part of me that girl was here today and the world could have had the gift of that same girl in it. Somedays I'm furious or depressed she is gone, but I try my best to make most days one I'm thankful for the gifted time we had with her and that her pain is over.

if you were wondering why ishida thought she said "moon", it's because she said "tsuki" which translates to "moon". She meant to say "suki" there which means "i love you".

When Shoya seems to stumble on nothing when trying to stop Shoko from jumping, he actually has a foot injury. This was in the manga, but it was cut from the movie.

This is up there with Your Name for me too Suzy! Yes this one was deeper i agree it's my favorite anime movie, i cried so much too! The meaning and message of the movie is so important, i just love it so much and i loved your reaction to it! Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for reacting to it!

Every time I watch this movie I feel that I understand something better. In the scene where Yuzuru says she was photographing dead animals was so Shoko could see what death looked like, Yuzuru and the mom start crying in a melancholy, dark room. I see this as, no, *this* is what death looks like.

*The moral:* The past cannot he changed, but it’s not too late to start anew.

This movie.. i don‘t know where to start..i have the social anxiety like shoya. I didn‘t realize until last year. The movie was like a trigger for me to realize it. Its kinda rough, because i can‘t looking people in the eyes too. I prefer too look down. Is it called a phobia or something?? Soo this is exactly what people miss when watching the movies this way and the exact same reason we ask it to be watched as how the original is...haha so I'll explain the confession scene. (Moon 月=Tsuki) (Love/like 好き=Suki) Moon and love have similar pronunciations and that's why Shoya misunderstands it. Shoko said Suki, and because her pronunciation was not very clear, Shoya hears it as Tsuki. Also, in Japan, there's a famous phrase that goes like this: "The moon is beautiful" It's used a lot to tell people you love them. hope this doesn't get filtered

As much as Naoka Ueno (black haired girl) was a b*tch... I can't bring myself to hate a character who got that upset and protective over someone they really like. Especially when she seem to be trying to make amends and correct a few mistakes with Shoya the entire movie. She's not a nice person. Can't call her bad either. Her actions themself have been done and forgiven with other characters. Not to mention she's one of the bullies that fully acknowledges that Shoya was thrown under the bus when it was essentially the entire class and apologized TO HIM!

I'd call her bad for sure. Bad people can still have crushes, and still care about those who're important to them. But none of that erases the fact that she's a bully. She called someone a freak simply for their disability. She slapped a deaf girl simply because she said she doesn't hate her. She beat up and insulted someone for attempting to commit suicide. She is in no way not a bad person. That may change someday, since she's showed some growth. But as of now she's too selfish and violent to be seen as a gray character.

@@CupOfTaeWithAKookie I feel you're leaning too hard on the disability factor. These are people (not real in this case), not infants. Bullying is just bad, it's not somehow 10x worse if the person is handicap. Injecting the disability to somehow make it sound worse just make disabled individuals seem less than enabled individuals. People get bullied for anything and everything. I'm not trying to negate the negative repercussions it had on Shouka. It's just how it's gonna sound when defending her bully. Ueno is just a very honest individual. Her nature and Shouka will just clash too often. If someone treats everyone but 1 person decently at the very least, does treating the one person make them bad? A lot of the animosity is simply her assuming there was a mutual hatred. It hated Shouka was lying to her. Not to mention in Japan and countless religions look down on those who commit suicide. So when someone she cared about almost died for a "selfish" person then she lashed out. Victim blaming is a useless word to a culture that normalize shaming suicide and it's survivors. And I'm not of the business of being critical of other people's cultures and principles. I guess she looks especially bad for western viewers.

@DareDArrow That's a lot of excuses that ultimately don't change the fact that she's most definitely a bad person. Bullying someone for a disability that's completely out of their control is terrible. It's not me infantalizing people with disabilities, it's acknowledging that she belittled her for simply being born the way she was. As for the cultural stigma around suicide, that doesn't excuse her behavior. No other character would get violent towards someone for being suicidal. Even from a cultural standpoint what she did was excessive. She's simply a violent person, and likes to take it out on those she deems weak. She slapped her for saying she doesn't hate her, and then beat her up for trying to take her life. Nothing Shoko does would ever truly please her. Unless she stoops down to her own level.

But the fact is EVERYONE in the movie treated Shouko differently because of her disability. It wasn't until her disability affected Ueno's own life that she even held any hostility towards Shouko. If you believe people are equal then the act itself should be inexcusable, not them being born different on top of that. So, No... Bullying a disabled person isn't worse than bullying an enabled person. It's the same. Not to mention Shoya had a worse resume of bullying said disabled character. Cost the family a lot of money, physically harmed her, initially wanted to hang out with her to make himself feel better (regardless of how she felt). Despite what I believe is there a difference between Bulling someone who so happen to be disabled and bullying someone because they're disabled? If so then a reminder. Shoya bullied Shouko because she was disabled. Ueno bullied Shouko because of her personality (if anything)... Her being disabled didn't change how she treated her tbh. The only non ableist in the movie imo. Lol. But no, she's nowhere near the worse character in the movie.

Just a comment for the very beginning of the movie: a common thing with people who intend to end their lives is that they get everything organized before they go through with it. They tie up loose ends, try to make amends with people, pay back money, clean their place or sell their belongings. It's not talked about often, but it's something to watch out for if you know someone who has been depressed or a mess for a long time. If they suddenly seem less weighed down and are getting organized, it could be a sign they've made a decision. Not always of course.

How this movie didnt win any awards is beyond me. Masterpiece of a story. The only movies that even remotely come close to A Silent Voice are Your Name and Let me eat your pancreas. And yes im aware this is based of the manga. Doesnt make this movie any less beautiful...

I'm not Deaf, but I've learned a bit of sign language off and on over the years. I've heard many Deaf people say that the way Shoko is treated in the beginning is pretty similar to how a lot of people treat Deaf people in real life. Maybe not to the full extent of the bullying she receives, but stuff like being put in a classroom with a teacher who is not trained on how to teach her properly, not giving her accommodations like a special teacher, or an interpreter. People saying that it would be better for them if she just learned to read lips and talk, rather than them wanting to learn sign language. There are still parents out there today who can hear, but end up having a Deaf child, and refuse to learn sign language to communicate with their own child. It's pretty sad.

Hey y'all were asking what the blonde girl did to be a bully. It's more subtle but for example she volunteered to help shoko in choir and then cued shoko early do she would mess up the song and make everyone mad at her. She's the person who starts drama and then pretends they didn't.

I really love Robbie Daymond acting in this movie, he really brings out so much from every thing he's been in.

This movie hurts because Shouko's childhood was essentially the same as my own. While I'm not deaf, I am autistic and that comes with some pointed differences to someone neurotypical. I've been here. Lets also remember that children can be savage AF. I'm also accutely aware of how Shouya feels, for different reasons I'm going through this and have done for the past few years..... for a very 'normal' looking animated movie, it hits hard on these topics. This is all why I struggle to express my feelings and I just assume people don't like me even if they're nice to my face.

I love this movie! But it is kind of hard to buy that she didnt have any kind of interpreter in class with her. The rest of it feels like a brutally real portrayal of middle school though.

I believe the manga covers that a bit more - her father left when she was very young, not willing/able to deal with raising a child with a disability. As such, her mother had insisted on her being treated "normally", which meant going to school normally. This, of course, turned out not to be what Shoko needed at all, and it's one of the (sympathetic) flaws of the mother.

To add a little more context, even to this day, Japan has always had a very rough relationship with disability. Children with disabilities normally go to special needs schools. It is so uncommon for a child with a disability to go to a normal school that many schools are not staffed with people truly equipped to help them (like interpreters or even disability friendly teaching methodology like the teacher in the flashback). If it weren't for the fact that buildings now have disability focused requirements and fixed this problem, many of the non-special needs schools spent decades not even being wheelchair accessible for visitors/parents.

love this movie, it was emotional but beautiful at the same time.

For cultural context also, Japan is a country all about fitting in. Wherein western culture loves celebrating individuality, japan suppresses it and gives higher regard for unity of society. So anything that makes you stand out, will give you the label as an outcast which adds another level of difficulty for Shoko to connect with other people

Yea as a Japanese, I call BS on that. No one here in Japan views deafness as an “individuality” to even begin with. And having lived in western countries before, they celebrate individuality as much as they do in Japan. Its really not that different to even try bringing up cultural context.

I loved Robbie Daymond so much in this movie (he voices Shoyua)

After watching the movie a bunch if times and lots of reactions I think that Shoya was influenced by the kids around him. He always looked at the kids around him when he bullied her, all of the main characters did things to her but he only started after the others. He followed them but did more to seem cool. He was seeking attention and wanted to feel loved. He was always slightly depressed or had socializing issues/anxiety. I suffer from severe anxiety and depression so I can see the warning signs. I love this movie and his character.

35:11 With the cymbals there and everything, my heart stops and I tear up every time. I read this manga in middle school and it's (arguably) even more devastating than the movie, just because they had more time. Every time I watch this movie I cry several times, its just such a heart wrenching (and heart warming, at times) movie.

If you go back to the choir class scene, when they were in elementary school, you'll see the blonde girl's 🐂💩... She knew that Shoko was watching her, to know when to start singing. She intentionally started moving her mouth early, so that Shoko would start singing early... She was bullying Shoko too. She was just slicker at it. Then dramatically playing "victim" any time she'd get called out on her shenanigans.

I’ve never related to a protagonist of a movie so much. We’ve all done bad things in our past and we learn from them, but for me it just permanently damages a part of my soul. I’ve hurt people before, and it can be devastating to your social confidence when you reap the repercussions of it.

I cry like a baby when watching it for 1st time and I have watched it many times. I still cry like that 😢.

Way to torture yourselves guys xD It is a fantastic movie that resonated a bit with me. I had to take a break halfway though due to having an emotional breakdown. It was heavy. I love the display of compassion and the growth of the two main characters.

Shoko before walking away from the fireworks signed "thank you" instead of "see you" (which is her usual sign when she exits the scene).

To me the elementary school teacher was the real villain of the story...all the kids were being assholes like they are but he didn't punish them enough also he did put Shoko is weird positions that made her vulnerable to bullying....also if he knew Shoya was bullying Shoko he didn't say a word to him or to the administration and also let others make him the fall guy..

Redemption. Thats what this story is all about. Yeah he is a despicable person but well people can change. Hope Thats the other message of the movie. Its such a beautiful story that when it came out everone was looking at "Your Name" when they should of been looking at THIS Glad you enjoyed it. Its so good and the animation is beyond gorgeous lol
