It's tough to beat Paint it Black! And anything from the Exile on Mainstreet album is great but a completely different, more bluesy sound. Stones did many different sounds, yet are all recognizably the Stones.

This song was from the infancy era of Rock N Roll. Just as with The Beatles, every band at that time had to try and land a hit song that was 3 minutes or less. This was also when it was all about the 45rpm single. Albums were not a thing at that time. All that being said, this song is genius and the riff is legendary. There would not be all that 70s music that you guys love so much if not for the early songs the Beatles and Stones pioneered in the early to mid 60s. Almost forgot, Los Angeles here.
One of the MOST iconic guitar riffs of all time. Instantly recognizable and, quite possibly, my favorite Stones song.

One of the all-time great rock and roll songs and it still will be a hundred years from now.
I'm always amazed by how ahead of their time The Rolling Stones were! This song sounds like nothing else from 1965, blows everything else out of the water! It's like they could read the future! Great song!
This song doesn't sound like the Beatles although I can appreciate the confusion. This song is actually very original, so much so that it is not only one of the fundamental building blocks of The Rolling Stones sound but also a foundational building block of the entire garage rock genre.

My fav Stones track by far. Gimme Shelter is life changing as a music fan.
It must be remembered that you're listening through a "time lens" when you listen to songs from the early 60's. For example, the 'fuzz' tone you hear was a NEW thing then. Although Fender amps from '61 onward had tremolo and reverb, the 'fuzzy' Vox box was the first of the special effects sounds contraptions you could add to an electric guitar. (Before that, if you wanted a 'fuzzy' tone you had to own a little blonde Fender amp) There was no wah wah pedal or, of course, any of the myriad of other pedals etc. that, now days, can be used to bend the sound of an instrument. It's kind of like looking at a film from the thirties or something, although the style in which it is presented may be technology dated, the story itself is not necessarily so. Great choices would be "Sympathy for the Devil", "Have you seen your mother baby? (Hiding in the shadows), "Mothers little helpers" (about coping with what was a boring life as a housewife), and "19th Nervous Breakdown". The Stones always had a 'dark' side to their music. Whereas the Beatles were a northern band from Liverpool, the Stones were a southern band from London. The Stones were less commercial than the Beatles and generally remained with their rock/blues origins whereas the Beatles moved beyond their beginnings( in skiffle) and into a more universal style of music encompassing melodies and sounds from a wide variety of cultures and times.

Great post! I would also add that these guys would have the same feeling when comparing early versions of British Invasion bands to their later stuff. Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who--even the Moody Blues. But it would really be interesting to see them compare The Yardbirds to what the band became later--Led Zeppelin.
The effect of this, when it came out, was intense. The cute Beatles had been doing "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (Yes, they were grittier than that, but this was the image they were then selling), and here comes The Stones with Jagger demanding what's rightfully his. You need to see it in that historical perspective (I was 13 at the time).

Guys. You know I love you. Especially you Alex because you’re so CUTE ha ha but holy shit you just embarrassed us (Gen Z). Satisfaction is basically Jailhouse Rock or Johnny B Goode. Considered near the top of finest recordings ever made. And NEVER compare 50’s and early 60’s recordings to late 70’s (Beast of Burden, Spirit of Radio). It’s the equivalent of comparing a late 90’s video game like “Doom 2” to “Red Dead Redemption 2”.

The Rolling Stones have songs started in the early 60s to the 20s, equipment was pretty basic and the amps were a lot less wattage than now. The band has grown from the "bad boys of rock and roll" the stones pretty much messed up our parents minds. Ths stones wereno were not current the beatles and there was a lot of competition between them. It got to the point where the bands were releasing songs every other week.

The consensus seems to be "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'", "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Gimme Shelter". I probably have to go along with that thought, even if I have other, personal favorites. You kinda took on a heavyweight with "Satisfaction". Arguably one one their fans' favorites, and a riff that is considered to be one of the most iconic in rock history.
19th Nervous Breakdown is one of the best Rolling Stones songs in my opinion. Toledo, Ohio
The guitar intro is one of the most famous of all rock. The Stones were NOT trying to outdo the Beatles as they had a moodier, darker undertone, as did the Animals. I was in high school back then, and this blew everyone away. It was UNIQUE, and it still sounds good!

That's quite a statement, but I'll go with "may be".
The Beatles did actually write an early Stones single - I Wanna Be Your Man - which they also recorded themselves. However, I think most of what Andy is hearing as a similarity is just the tremendous debt that both bands owed (especially in their early days) to their American idols in blues and R & B.
The 1st massive worldwide hit for The Rolling Stones in 1965. The guitar sound is legendary. Guitar players were running out to try and emulate that sound. According to a few older guitar players I've played with, a Sam Ash Fuzzola was the only thing that came close. This is the early Stones, the Stones were influenced by American Blues artists such as Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Little Walter, Big Bill Broonzy, Jimmy Reed, etc..Along with R & B artists such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, etc... There are many blues & R&B covers on the 1st 4 Stones albums such as Little Red Rooster, Walking the Dog, Route 66, Look What You've Done, I Just Want to Make Love To You, I Just Can't Be Satisfied, Time is On My Side, You Can't Catch Me, Cry To Me, Confessin' The Blues. The Beatles did not play the blues, The Stones did. The only place where The Beatles & The Stones cross paths is when each band does their own renditions of 50's Rock N Roll songs. For instance The Beatles do "Long Tall Sally by Little Richard and Rock N Roll Music by Chuck Berry. The Stones do "Carol" by Chuck Berry & :Not Fade Away" by Buddy Holly. In 1965 when the Stones released Satisfaction, this was one of the hardest driving songs with that fuzzy guitar sound never heard before. It was much harder than anything that was out there at the time. So, I must didagree when you say it sounds like The Beatles. At that time, The Beatles had nothing that was remotely close to Satisfaction.
Good choice. I was a teenager at the time. I’m 65 now. Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

How this sounded to us kids in the 60s, well I don´t think that can ever be explained, especially in the UK, newspaper headlines....Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone...... The Stones did more towards the attitude of us kids back then than any hack with a typewriter could dream of, the Beatles were nothing more than a boy-band in comparison, throw in the Who, the Kinks, the Pretty Things etc etc etc, and you may just get an insight as to where we were heading, great reactions though, keep em coming.

Exactly what I’ve been thinking on these older ones for them. It’s hard to convey just how revolutionary Satisfaction sounded to our 1965 ears.

For 1965 Satisfaction was a revolutionary song, and kind of broke ground that not even the Beatles matched. Rolling Stone magazine listed it # 2 in their list of their 500 greatest songs of all time. With that said, I think the Stones really peaked a few years later with Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Gimme Shelter and Can't you hear me knocking would be great tunes to review.

The Rolling Stones have a vast catalog of iconic songs. But I have to agree with other comments. "Sympathy For the Devil" has to be your next Stones song. -Boston MA. That reminds me. You guys should get back to reacting to more Boston songs. There are so many more songs by them that you need to hear.
Which Stones song to listen to next? Um, YES. Now you've already heard Paint It Black and Beast of Burden so my picks would be: Sympathy For The Devil Street Fightin Man Brown Sugar
This was the # 1 song in 64 and 65!, Listen again

From Vestby in Norway. And dig The Rolling Stones - "Start Me Up"

I'm 63 years old guys, and this was the first record I ever bought. It must have been 1965, and I was 9 years old. Went to the drug store after hearing this on the radio, and paid 1 dollar for the 45 RPM single. Not sure what song was on the "B"side of the record, maybe "she's Like a Rainbow" or something. I will never forget that day. I had mowed a couple lawns, and saved the money to buy that record. A buck back then, was like 5 bucks or more now. Great early years Stones song, that is still considered in the top 100 rock songs of all time. Thanks guys
