Song was SO BAD…Singer Couldn’t Stop LAUGHING When He Recorded It…Became a Smash!--Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Today we’re literally giving you three chords and the truth with a song that has left an indelible mark on rock history… Wild Thing by the TROGGS... Written and recorded under the gun, The songwriter Chip Taylor had to write the song and record a demo in just a few hours to hit a deadline. Otherwise, he might miss his date with destiny. After he finished recording it. it was so corny he fell on the floor laughing! He had written the song as a joke as a code word for Sex. Turns out, the song completely flopped the first time around. And then feeling embarrassed by the track’s sexual undertones, this writer tried to hide it from his publisher. But someone found it and it was picked up by today’s famous group, The Troggs. Piggybacking on someone else’s recording session, the band laid it down in something like 20 minutes. But as fast as it took to record, this song was no flash in the pan. The song was all a big joke and it made its writer so rich he was gambling 10 grand a day in Vegas… The story is up next on Professor of Rock.

Declared by many to be the “first British punk band”, today’s featured musicians gave us a surefire classic… and the original writer laughed the entire time he wrote it. thinking it was all a huge joke. Little did he know that Joke would bring in a lot of money. It’s the Troggs with Wild Thing. The Troggs, short for Troglodytes, aka “cave men” were a garage rock band that originated in Andover, England. In 1964 Reginald Maurice Ball, later famously known as Reg Presley, was working as a bricklayer while at the same time playing in the first lineup of The Troggs… When that formation disbanded, Reg and drummer Ronnie Bond joined up with guitarist Chris Britton and bassist Pete Staples… members of a rival Andover band named Ten Feet Five.
By 1965, Reg took on lead vocalist duties, and the guys were soon discovered by up-and-coming producer Larry Page. Page had struck gold with one of the most influential rock bands of the 60s, first called the Ravens and later renamed the Kinks. These guys scored big time with their breakout #1 UK hit You Really Got Me. Following this burst of success, Larry Page signed the Troggs and in 1966, the band recorded a one-off single for CBS Records called ‘Lost Girl’. It wasn’t a hit.
However, their next single would be. Famously becoming an essential entry into the story of rock and roll. The song was of course Wild Thing! Although popularized by the Troggs, Wild Thing wasn’t actually written by the band. Rather it originated with a songwriter named Chip Taylor. Throughout his career, Taylor was a prolific writer, composing songs for Willie Nelson, the Hollies, Linda Ronstadt, Janis Joplin, and Jackie DeShannon. Notably one of his biggest hits was Angel Of

Hi Professor of Rock, my parents were brought together by a Troggs song. The song was I Can't Control Myself, which was banned on the radio here in Australia. So as dad was invited to a party in 1966. He mentioned to the party organiser, Betty, "Do you have the banned Troggs song?" Which she replied, "Yes, I do!" The conversation that followed led to them getting to know each other, and finally going out. And sometime later married. I am their first son.

In April 1966, when 'Wild Thing' was released, we used to dance to it and the B side 'From Home' at the local church youth club. It was played more than any other record for weeks. They were one of my favourite bands. Little did I know twelve years later, I would be their manager and produce a record with them at the famous Olympic Studios in London. Talking with Reg, I can confirm all the information and facts you mentioned are extremely accurate. My memories of Reg (and Ronnie) are something I will always cherish.

Wild Thang is a legend in our home. Originally we adopted a stray kitten and named it Figaro after the sweet cat in Pinocchio, after a short time we knew his personality was not suited to that name at ALL. Within a few months he became Wild Thang. When I called him, it was if I were singing it. WILD THANG. It stuck. My son was around 5 when he were in the grocery store and the song played. His eyes lit up and he said "There is a song about my cat! " Indeed son. That is what the song is all about. Being feral.

I love Jimi Hendrix' cover of this tune. I was in the middle of a fraternity initiation weekend where we were subjected to some pretty awful music nonstop during the day. The sorority across the street played Jimi Hendrix' Wild Thing at a loud volume such that it carried over to where we were trying to skeep. I dont remember any rock and roll song sounding better than that one did at that moment.

I couldn't imagine a whole band setting up, and recording two songs in that time period. They must have been well rehearsed, and the engineers were on their game! They probably came in and used instruments, amps, and microphones that were already set up from the previous recording session?

Repeated hearing, you warmed up to it, it kinda of felt like a sign of an era, a hippie vibe, a garage band, that deep heavy strumming, the pausing. It's almost like a tongue in cheek song parody. Something to be sung around a beach campfire, swaying as a group to the music, beer in hand, wave crashing. You know road trip, Beach Animal House.

They (of course) performed Wild Thing & one other tune which I've been going crazy trying to find online in some archive somewhere anywhere. It was a truly wonderful show all around. You owe it to yourself to watch it yourself if you can. There are snippets here on KZread but (as of yet) not the entire show. Thank you for reigniting my love of this band. One thing I've been thinking about is how people respond to honest, no-dress-up ideas or thoughts. One of the things that will really attract me to an artist is their ability to inject humor and personal joy. I think simple songs, without complications in the writing can still represent complex emotions or concepts that we can identify with on another level, but it doesn't have to be college philosophy lesson😊 Long live silly love songs!

My favorite version of "Wild Thing" was by The Ventures, who channeled a vocal impression of Peter Lorre. Pure genius. Anyone else hear "Louie Louie" when the guitar opens this one?

As always, treated superbly, Professor. I was getting worried that you weren’t going to mention the ‘Senator Bobby’ version, which I heard as much as any, being a Doctor Demento aficionado. Bravo!

Shortly after graduating from high school in the mid 80's, I work at a department store as a stock boy. On the store's canned music they had the Troggs Wild Thing that would repeatedly play during the course of an eight hour shift. I've only grown to enjoy the song more and more every year since. Thanks for covering it!

My fave Troggs song has always been "Love Is All Around." Some people may also remember the band The Royal Guardsmen who did that crazy hit song "Snoopy vs The Red Baron." In '68 they also released the rock ballad "Baby Let's Wait" if you've never heard it before. Another group many of you may not have heard before is the Chicago band New Colony Six who had two great songs: 1) I Will Always Think About You '68 2) Things I'd Like To Say '69.

As a kid in the US-San Francisco area -in 1966 I was 13, I bought the 'Wild Thing' single from the local record store; It was getting good airplay on the local KEWB 910am station. To 'sample it' I had it played over their in-store PA, and I still remember the 'elderly' sales lady rolling her eyes (and head) at me and the Troggs blasting that number. I loved that song...I never played the B side. I've still got the 45 in the garage.
