“It sounds like a Human”. Spot on there Rick.

I absolutely despise the way popular music has gone the last x-number of years. The move to fix everything and have everything perfect takes the humanity out of the music. Human musicians are not machines... even the best will have imperfections in the work. It is what it should be. Well said, Ralph.

It's a testament to how much the public are desperate for music just like the quality of Adele's. The atmosphere and connection music from the past gives us is rarely encountered with today's offerings, yet she delivers on both counts, admirably. Adele's for me is a torch bearer of yesterday's music and she understands and respects exactly what the public wants. Thank you for covering this track, Rick.

Of course we do, and we love her for it because it’s human; she is not a robot. Even if her songs are just so damn sad we cry, they still feed us emotionally. It's beatifull to hear a human being expressing emotions through music. Adele has an outstanding voice and the best musicians playing with her. Oh, agreed. Every time I listen to this song, I hear the flaws (they're much more apparent to me in this song than any of her previous chart-toppers). Her pitch isn't always right on, and there's a...a threadiness, a kind of buzz, in her high notes, and on a very picky level, that bothers me because she is such an excellent singer in general. BUT. I love it that the emotion and expression in her voice show through the flaws. On top of that, the lyrics of this song are about making it through difficulties, and the imperfections in her vocal delivery underscore the meaning of the song. I'm a fan.

I think what makes this song so good is several things. First, her voice is unbelievably beautiful. The arrangement of the song is simple yet well done. But her words take you to a place of pain in your heart that you can relate to or if you have never experienced it yourself, you wonder with a childlike wonder about what sort of thing pain like this is, which means you have a heart and an understanding of humanity. My 4 year old daughter showed me this song and I cried in front of her and so did she. She’s never experienced anything painful in her young life but she relates to pain. It really blows my mind how complicated human beings are.
All her music has such soul and emotion she is so natural and beautiful you can hear her feelings.
Adele has always had beautifully produced, heartfelt songs in her repertoire. Her voice is so unique in tone, raspy in some spots, as if she’s just gotten finished crying out her agony and pain…it simply touches you upon hearing it. She’s just a beautiful artist, and deserves every bit of her fame and success…

Its nice of you to compliment Rick, but you've got his talent exactly backwards. Nobody has a greater capacity to teach that there is fundamentally OBJECTIVE merit in that which others would dismiss as merely SUBJECTIVE--that there are "just (appropriate) sentiments" toward things. Rick is the type of teacher lauded by C.S. Lewis in The Abolition of Man: "Aristotle says that the aim of education is to make the pupil like and dislike what he OUGHT.”..... “Until quite modern times all teachers […] believed the universe to be such that certain emotional reactions on our part could be either congruous or incongruous to it-believed, in fact, that objects did not merely receive, but could MERIT, our approval or disapproval, our reverence or our contempt.”.... “The man who called the waterfall sublime was not intending simply to describe his own emotions about it: he was also claiming that the object was one which merited those emotions.”

When my 87 year old grandmother, 61 year old mother, me at 39 and my kids 7-14 can all agreed that she's an incredible singer...that means she has true prefect talent! And I've seen her live twice and it's always either the same as the recorded version or better! Usually better because depending on how she's feeling the song, the crowd, her emotions she sings it that way by adding words or changing words or the emotions hit at different parts of the song that's not hit on in the recorded version. It's magical actually. And the reason her songs sound the way they do is because she sings and records each of her songs just once. For the demo, start to finish and that's the song that's released, period. She said at one of her concerts that the song we hear recorded is the first time it was all put together, it was all of her raw emotions she was feeling while writing the song being put together for the first time. And if she can't do that in one take then the song doesn't make the cut. She goes so long between albums because her songs are hers and based off her real life at the moment she wrote it, she can't sing songs that she didn't write and make a album based off someone else's feelings that she had no part in. So she has to live a life to make a record. And it's magical! I hope I'm 80 years old and able to hear Adele's 60 record 😂

Anyone who has a true appreciation for great music can't help to be deeply touched by this recording. The first time I heard it I cried. Just amazing.
One of my favorite videos of all time because Rick’s emotional reaction matches Adele’s massive expressiveness. It made me cry more than the “official video” because it captures her ability to emotionally connect with her fans, in this case one of the most talented musical analysts out there.

Adele’s voice alone can fill a room better than most five pieces. Her voice is what people come to hear. An engineer and producer with the sense to not mess with it are probably the most valuable part of the mix.

I love her style the way she flicks between falsetto and full voice so much. She does it alot in all of her songs and it is just beautiful.

Another 'real' music fan here, never really heard 19 but when 21 came out I was blown away. Couldn't stop playing it. Adele is a once in a generation artist - huge soulful voice, great songs, perfect arrangements and top notch production that stays out of the way. Watching Rick draw much the same conclusions put a huge smile on my face 😁

That "slightly sharp" section you mentioned was actually my favorite moment of the whole song upon first listen. Hauntingly beautiful is how I'd describe it. I agree it's sharp now that you point it out, but it just works. She can shake so many different sounds out of a major third, it's unreal

Amazing how the lyrics match the melody and how the chord progression works with the voicing and the phrasing.....very close to Broadway without going over the falls and actually landing on a broadway stage.....such a fantastic song.....
Thank you, Rick, for reminding us what real music is and how it's made. Like you I'm a player and like you I remember when quality mattered in popular music. Always love to check in with your channel and stay in touch with that. 🙂
I absolutely love your enthusiasm for music, Rick. It’s infectious.
I really appreciate how you point out that there are imperfections in her vocal performance. Obviously you did not mean that negatively. In a time where everything is autotuned and quantized to death, a real musical performance with slight imperfections is a breath a fresh air. This reminds me of someone pouring out their soul and just letting everything out. That’s so powerful and relatable. The overly quantized/autotuned music today doesn’t hold a candle to this.

"actual music" So, who gets to make that definition? You? How do you measure it, and more importantly, how do you enforce it? There's no such thing as "actual" or "real" music. All music is real music - no matter what way it's made, or how popular it is. Music is art, and art is 100% subjective. Gatekeeping doesn't change that.

@@Syklonus There's no point, dude. There will always be people making this argument ad nauseam without any critical thought. For some reason they think the line is divinely drawn at guitar, bass, keyboards, and drumset. Anything more than that is not "real" music somehow.

There is no doubt about it Adele is in a class by herself. She is like the singers of yesterday. She really has talent. She is one of the few singers of today I listen to. There are not many singers like her out there today That is why she is a superstar. That is why she sells records. Most of the songs out there are missing something. Adele's music brings back the music of yesterday. When music was really music.

I love Adele's voice in her awesome songs that she does and she seriously let it rip and it shines on so many levels and your amazement reviewing it is awesome in itself, Rick. I am so glad that I just found your channel on here. God bless, brother.
I loved what you said at the end, that “it is fresh sounding because it’s so empty”. That was my first impression of the song as well. The emptiness provides room for the emotion of her voice.
The first time I ever heard Adele was when my father, a lifelong musician told me , “ listen to this girl sing , she’s amazing, occasionally she uses her voice like a sax” Loved her ever since. She can sing.
I think the use of the word ‘Baby’ is fairly specific here, in that it’s written to her young son, literally her baby. She’s so so good. I don’t have huge amounts of solo female singers in my collection; but for me she’s up there with Mavis Staples and Whitney Houston.
