Hi there - I'm the cinematographer and editor of this video. I'm in Houston, Texas with our correspondent Sheri Fink, reporting from inside Houston Methodist Hospital. What we are seeing in Texas is eerily reminiscent of the reports that came out of New York City in March. In Houston, we found a hospital bracing for what comes next, as there is no way of knowing when the number of cases will flatten. I'm here to answer questions, if you have any.

Not to take away from the gravity of this video, but that face shield the doctor was wearing is truly excellent. It completely filters out the air he breathes and, at the same time, allows his facial expression to be seen by the patients, which is so important, not only for the people who can't hear well, but to help improve the communication in general. It also looks like it could be easily sanitized at the end of the day. Whoever came up with it, good job!

Yet they can allow journalist and film crews in to video people at their and their families lowest point. If television stations can be there then allow everyone to have a loved one with them. This is not right. Medical establishment and television stations should be ashamed of themselves.

V E well you’re right because they’re sorting people who died from Covid and people who died with Covid. But think about it, what are the chances that you get tested positive and then as soon as you walk out someone points a gun at your head and shoots it? Yes I guess you could say the deaths are overcounted but we all know China are deliberately lying about their deaths and so is Brazil. A lot of the US states were reporting less deaths to make their response to Covid look good so they can reopen. The vulnerable who also contracted the virus but couldn’t get tested and died at a home would play a role in the death toll. So it’s safe to say that the true death toll is unknown and that the current one is accurate enough to use

For everyone who hasn't had covid....let me tell you, it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through. it ripped through my body leaving me damage and bed bound for months. I also got it from my work. I'm out of a job, can't take care of myself, and can't go back to school. People are astonished when they here how old I am...21, no preexisting conditions and healthy BMI. Its like Russian roulette. And the worst part is, most don't even develop decent immunity to it. So this "herd immunity" isn't a thing for this.

@Toni Plies I am 35 i was sick for almost a month, bed bound i mean and another month not really goes normal, i was in hospital for two weeks, i am lucky my case isn't that severe to be in ventilator or ecmo but i was suffering for almost two months, I am healthy no underlying health condition. I travel to asia in march when i went back to europe i got sick within 3 days of my arrival... the rest of my family were ok except for my 2 year old he got sick for a week. I am glad i live in part of europe where you wont get broke with medical bills i don't have to pay anything.. i was scared that my husband got it because he has asthma but i am thankful he did not have symptoms i guess he has better immunity than i am... a lot of us will come out from this but there will be those unlucky one. One should not be afraid or get panic about covid but should be cautious at least for yourself and the people around you.

If hospitals say that they have more cases of coronavirus, then they get more funding. Its just a fact. it doesn't matter if the patients came in with severe bronchitis, pneumonia, or the flu; what the govt cares about is if you catch a nosocomial infection (like coronavirus) then it becomes a "coronavirus death". Those PAPR respirators are amazing. In fact, we tried to order 60 units for our nursing staff at our hospital but the order was denied as it was over budget for the unit as they're too expensive. With the filter and battery, the PAPR is about $600 per unit. Why do we see doctors with them and not nurses? Well, Doctors are able to purchase them directly through the manufacturer's outside of the hospital ordering system. Unfortunately, the companies that make them will NOT sell them to nurses outside of the hospital, only a doctor or a hospitals source supply can purchase them directly from the manufacturer's.

Methodist is the most well known in the medical center; next is Hermann with trauma one and Texas Heart, then MD Anderson, the cancer place. Hermann is the only trauma one in the medical center. Why the hype about Methodist ? political ? most politicians went there for their treatments. Trauma goes to Hermann / University of Tx where Dr. Red Duke used to work. Methodist used to have many wealthy Arab patients from the Middle-east. All political ! Weird seeing these women in burqas or some with their faces covered by a contraption that looked like a metal mask. So creepy. You could only see their eyes and barely. Even though they were visiting in the West, their habits did not change. Hijabs are now normal but they only cover the hair. Some women were completely covered up, even wearing gloves, in the Tx heat. They would treat anyone while money had to be paid upfront, in cash. These people did not bother with insurance.

Let's start with the fact that not everyone in a hospital works in one single department. It is divided up into radiology, cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, icu, er, labor & delivery, pediatrics, etc, etc. In a pandemic situation where people have been recommended to stay home and avoid hospitals as a prime site of viral contagion, anything not directly tied to treating or diagnosing the pandemic virus always slows down. People don't schedule elective surgeries, things that people might come in for, they decide they can handle at home, or put off for a while. So yes, the rest of the hospital slows down. In NY, this actually allowed them to convert several other areas of hospitals into COVID recovery areas. Less staff total does not mean there are less staff in the ER or ICU areas. Please don't be wilfully stupid.

So what's your takeaway from that? I'll give you mine in case you're curious. A doctor shouldn't be saying you're gonna be ok, that's a promise he can't keep, especially for something like this. And of course the patients are scared, I'd be scared too if I was in a hospital with Covid. And of course he's gonna treat them "medically", what else is he gonna do with them in a hospital? Now you don't want to scare your patients, that's not useful, but guess what happens when you tell someone they're gonna be fine and they come back barely able to breath. They're gonna assume you have no idea what you're talking about and don't understand their condition. They're gonna ask for a different doctor, and you're gonna feel as bad as they do. If someone comes in who is asymptomatic but they are there with another illness or injury but they test positive, are they reported in the number hospitalized? The reason I ask this, there is a difference between someone in the hospital because of COVID and someone in the hospital with COVID. See, people see the number of hospitalizations and assume these are people who are there because of COVID but I don't believe that is the correct stat.

We did not see the test or the results (because that takes time and the reporter wasn't there for 7 days). The reality is if they are having respiratory problems and are in the hospital the chance is high that it is corona right now. They may have other things going on too. Like heart issues, or diabetes, or what have you. But that does not mean they are NOT corona patients as well. AIDS isn't what kills you directly. It just wipes out your immune system and pneumonia is the usual culprit. You could end up in the hospital for a broken spine and they discover you have covid-19. This entire argument that they are inflating the numbers because these people have other things too is just a pile of horse manure.
