Welcome to another non - Bad Gear episode. I built ReBirth for real and this happened. Propellerhead Rebirth RB-338, the iconic 90s music production software and virtual groovebox was my first electronic musical instrument. Since then I had the dream of reconstructing the classic setup consisting of a Roland TR-808, a Roland TR-909, two Roland TB-303 and specific set of effects. Can we recreate the software workflow, are the famous vintage instruments as great as anybody is telling you and is all this worth the hassle?

    I remember when ReBirth came out, I was 17 and I was instantly hooked. I spent many years producing hard techno with it, routing it into cubase via some obscure internal tool before they released ReWire. I had totally forgotten about the skins until I saw them in this video and it all came flooding back, I used many of them extensively. Man, this is a stark reminder that I used to be very passionate about creating music. Don't know what happened to that.

In '97 being on the computer 24/7 and not doing school work or playing Doom was usually met with concern. I'd sit there for hours recording through the audio/headphone jack onto a cassette. I remember the first banger I made and played relentlessly in the car. Thanks for the nostalgic memories! I'm so glad you did a video on this, nice setup idea!

    This video got me so pumped! 20 years ago my uni roommates and I jammed nonstop with ReBirth in our basement dorm. Ever since, I've been dreaming of building that setup in real life but feeling it was hopelessly out of reach. Thanks to Saint Uli (the TD-3 is ticking all my boxes) and the last 10 years explosion of affordable synth hardware, RB-338 nirvana finally seems within reach! (As an electrical engineer, I thought building a x0xbox was the only true way, but that design missed the mark with its hard-to-source parts and cheesy enclosure; no need to fetishize obscure Japanese transistors, just plop down a 2N3904 and get on with it! ). Trying to get an all-hardware setup to match Rebirth's easy workflow and FX routing on a budget has been challenging. I didn't think of using Rebirth +ReWire as the sequencer, maybe that's a good compromise. I'm planning on a TD-3 controlled by an MC-707, with maybe a TR-8S or RD-9+RD-8. I'm hoping that the audio input, built-in FX, and multitrack USB interface of the MC-707 can act as a standin for a separate multi-fx send mixer or multitrack mixer/USB interface and several outboard pedals. The setups in your Bad Gear jams give me a ton of inspiration, both with and without a DAW. I love my MS-50G thanks to you! Keep it up Florian, you're a huge inspiration!

    I definitely think some of that comes down to buying-into Roland's official story, that they _had_ to cease the 808 due to running-out of transistors from the faulty batch. I've always thought that was just a convenient excuse to move towards samples anyway, as they'd wanted to do all along. It's true regular transistors don't sound _quite_ the same, but it doesn't entirely destroy the character imo. If it were more successful, Roland could've (and probably would've) released a rev2 or mk2 with different transistors and people would've gotten accustomed to it (just like we have with the various filter designs on Prophets or 2600s over the years).

  • @crabulent

    @crabulent

    8 ай бұрын

    @@kaitlyn__L The TD-3 uses the same BA662 VCA replacement that the x0xb0x and x0xheart use - plain old discrete transistors. Sounds pretty darn close. On the newer Behri stuff like the rd8 mk2 they switched to their Coolaudio VCA, a custom silicon remake of the original. Was it really necessary? I dunno. But I love that there's an affordable alternative to shelling out for some magical crusty 80s transistors.

  • @kaitlyn__L

    @kaitlyn__L

    @@crabulent whoops, I misread 303 as 808 in your comment 😅 I hadn’t had coffee yet (I have now!) The wider point definitely stands though, and on that I think we agree - the precise transistor can have very subtle effects but most don’t notice or they’re overpowered by other processing stages. Ever since I did electrical engineering class I’ve been frustrated by people claiming you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to have highly specific transistors or capacitors for an instrument. It’s a lot worse in guitar world, too.

    i gotta say, the jams are stand-alone-worthy in and of themselves. :D 1 - im loving the chugging gallop of very much a vintage-minimalist hard-techno that is otherwise straight out of hackers, blade, and the matrix. 2 - this one is more musically filled-out, but is still very close to that mood, being more evocative of Hackers, the 5th element, johnny mnemonic, and potentially a splash of bladerunner.

    My EHX Canyon is a permanent fixture on my board's mono aux send, it has earned its place as a performer seperate from my stereo fx chain. Invaluable little pedal, even in mono I find myself using it often. And I freaking love the 1960s lunchbox artwork aesthetic. I thought it might be cool to gang up a pair to create a dual-channel / stereo pair - I think the slewing inaccuracies introduced as you simultaneously worked each pedal with a separate hand might produce some cool stereo effects (or make people woozy).

    @@AudioPilz No I haven't, but it looks a little more complicated than I need and apparently sums the input to mono. The idea of pairing and rigging up mono pedal pairs into 2-handed expressive controllers for stereo results seems like a fun idea, for sound design and tweaking live.

    Love this. Rebirth was actually where I made my first steps learning about sequencing and programming. There's a slew of 303, 808 and 909 clones, emulations and whatnot but I am with you that it was a special thing that should be set free

    Great video as always! I’ve always wanted to get a little DAWless setup going myself, but the amount of space (and all the extras needed to sync and hear everything) is just such a hassle that grooveboxes or using plugins nullify so appealingly. Eagerly welcome more content like this from you!

    Nostalgia overload! Rebirth was what got me into ‘serious’ music production. I remember thinking to myself: this is all I need to produce my first album 😅! I actually saved up for months to buy just Rebirth and a PC. And that lead me to Reason. I still don’t use reverb because Rebirth didn’t have one. And the 303 was my first introduction to synthesis. Remember that incredible TG Virus Megamix? By the way, D16 and Audiorealism have both kinda recreated Rebirth (in software, of course) , and mighty fine they are too.

    Bro i feel you.. i run Electribe, Donner B-1, TD-3, RD-6 together (and i even hook up Crave and use Donner as MIDI), all of this into Zoon G1Four... and it was a nightmare to hook up. Some of the gear never wanted to work with Korg sync, Korg refused to recognize other gear, TD and RD refused to sync in other way other than Midi sync... and one time this contraption catched a spark and made my PC go nuts- without even being hooked up to the same PC by Midi!... Also after that my game controller stated working as a mouse and i was able to control audio options with it... I can only imagine what you've been thru!

    Actually what you did was a very basic set up, knowing how to do it as what to use as a master clock is your probable issue, like those 9+ min sets where you use the same sequence and turn 2 or 3 knobs. Good luck though, I really look forwards to more of these sets.

    Cool watching you electro jam out on the (4 on the) floor 😎. When the 303 first came out, I was like, what were they thinking ?! It sounded like a wet fart...I STILL hate the sound of it ! (Although you did the best that can be done with it ) But imagine me at the music store, my gear lust overflowing at the sight of an 808 on the store display ? 😲 which I couldn't afford 😢 So I bought a Yamaha CX5M music computer (an amazing invention, hint hint) and a Doctor Rythm 110. I did a demo on cassette tape that I tried to submit to Robert Fripp at one of his early conferences . But he was drinking a beer talking with someone and said something like " now is not the time". I was like , damn dude . I was about 22 years old. Although I interacted with him several times after that and played a small concert with him once, I never did submit that cassette to him In hindsight, I guess I should have !

    @@AudioPilz Aw man , I had two I just sold on ebay a couple months ago. before I became aware of your channel, I would have gladly sent you one. One had the original SFG 01 module, and the other had the glorious SFG 05 module. There was a group dedicated to it headed by Carolyn Eng , she was the bomb. A very exclusive little club. I bought several patch banks of cassette data created by the N.Y. users groups that were FM phenomenal! I still have those tapes...I wish I had the means to sysex them into a 4 operator synth...I researched it, but couldn't find a real way how to do it. Those sounds rocked.
