Hehe, great controller for a great software!! I composed some songs in 90' with it. It was amazing to have 2 tb303 in you computer!! Also, all the mods the internet people did, it was amazing!! xD
This brought literally tears of joy to my eyes. I spent hours upon hours with Rebirth when I was young. Now I'm over 40 and finally restarted making music after 20 years. So many memories, this project is just incredible!

@@cl1xor I'dont think so. VST standard were invented by Steinberg as platform for plugins (also 3rd party) for their DAWs like Cubase or Nuendo. AFAIK. ReBirth was 1st (?) child of Propellerheads, I suppose they were co-students and needed some project to school :)

Same here. Spend hours and hours and hours with ProTracker on the Amiga, and can still remember most of the patterns almost 35 years later at age 48. Also, still have the modules on disk and occasionally use XMPlayer to get nostalgic. Am this close to get a couple of Moog DFAMs to start producing again.

When Rebirth came out in ‘98, my completely non-musical mate said to me “your Wibbly Wobbly box will be worthless now”. He was talking about my TB-303 😂. Very happy for you Sam, that you got this working - and by the time you’d set yourself! Looks absolutely incredible 👍

@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER Great project. Perhaps you can do a How To DIY Universal MIDI Controller video series, show details of how to build one for any or all hardware/software, MIDI gear, effects, synth, DAW, VSTs, and maybe desktop/rackable size? The commercial units I see doing that stuff cost about $1K US or more... 🤓

I'm not really a musician but ReBirth fascinated me back in the day and I played with it for hours. Building a hardware controller was a genius idea.
Man you have some great work ethic. I admire how quickly you get your projects done
Oh man, the keyboard you pulled out at 2:00 was the first keyboard I ever got! My parents got it for my when I was 12, and I used it along with Reason 2.5 and ReBirth! I would have been so psyched to have this interface. I remember setting up jam sessions with a ton of tracks in Reason and using mute buttons and volume fades to jam. I always wondered if getting a MIDI capable mixer so I could control the software directly would make that more fun. You basically answered the question!
Thank you for doing the thing I wanted to do in 1998/99. You have no idea how many people I trued to convince that we needed to be making big panels of buttons and knobs that just sent MIDI. Nobody believed me. ReBirth & Acid 2.0 were the drives for that… Fast forward to 2008 and the SMT place I work at gets the gig to make Open Labs workstations. Imagine my excitement! It only took a decade. You really should find you an OL for the museum.
And also respect for all the soldering work you do, every time again and again! Keep up the good work, I’m enjoying all your effort! 👍🏻
that's fantastic work mate, didn't think Rebirth would have so much useful midi implementation. I'm now going to reminisce for a couple of hours 😍
For everyone who's ever used Rebirth; this is a dream come true.
I used to spend hours on Rebirth, one of the greatest pieces of software of all time. Would love a go on that controller, looks like a lot of fun.

WE DEFINITELY MAKIN IT OUT OF THE 99' COUNTRYSIDE ILLEGAL RAVE WITH THIS ONE ‼‼🔥🔥🔥
Built my first Arduino based box of knobs for the Moog Animoog software running on an iPod touch.Moog had released wallpaper images of the Moog Voyager, so I edited them and laminated a frontpanel. animoog midi controller using Atmega328P
Love this…very cool project! I would have done some sketchy stuff for one of these back in the late 90’s…lol! it’s amazing how distinct that rebirth sound actually is, too. Looking forward to seeing part two!
Helped my maths teacher assemble bits of an analogue synth (Might have been a Hobby Electronics one) and learned about sampling on a BBC Micro with a Ferranti ADC chip on a breadboard. Used to tit about with the synth packages, samplers and trackers on Amiga a few years later (just recently got a sampler and MIDI interface for a 'miggy 500 again), had a Roland D and SC110 (ack, U110, not SC) at one point and absolutely loved it but never really 'did' anything other than mess about for myself. Real happy days and loads of fun.
Wow. So freaking cool. I love Rebith. It was actually my first music software ever. Then I bought Cubase and ran them together. Here I am 25 years later still producing music. Rebith was the start of that.
This is my personal favorite project of yours I have seen so far because it is so nostalgic for me. Rebirth is my top program from back then, spent hours and hours in it and something like this would have been absolutely mind-blowing for me all those years ago. Really great project here. I truly appreciate your approach and your drive to make such wonderful devices. All the best to you!
Sam mate youre a genius, theres no denying it, please tour this beast!!!! Theres something so asthetically pleaseing about thos older macs, I still use my old powerbook!
Rebirth was so awesome. I remember it blowing me away when it came out. Fiddled with it for hours. I moved on to Reason (which I still use to this day). Great fan of Reason Studios (formerly Propellerhead Software)
This was indeed bangin;! Very very awesome project! Like unlocking the performance mode of the software like no one ever before, this is! I loved seeing Hainbach play it with his sensibilities, and everything I heard in this video was great! Cheers!
I'd LOVE to visit you "obsolete" museum somewhen. Man, that's treasures everywhere and a infinite passion on your side. Just great to see this 🙂
For some time and a few hundred dollars, you have shown how anyone can make a fully featured hardware synth. Thanks man. This program got me started too...many years later I picked it up for real. I would play this before a lot of my expensive hardware.
Wow! Very cool! Lots of memories of not knowing what the hell I was doing playing with Rebirth back in the day.

yeah. I was always frustrated with my Creamware Pulsar setup for the same reason. Glorious Hammond B3 emulation, rubbish controls. They went to the e-waste collection
For me this is one of your best builds ever! I was always a bit miffed I couldn't simultaneously tweak multiple knobs back in the day. This physical realization is a dream come true. Love that you did this. Cheers mate!
Man, that controller is so gorgeous. And here we are, nearly 30 years later, and if you told me that this was some reissued hardware synth, or a Diva dem I would believe it. These tones are timeless and sound HUGE
i needed that back then!! awesome
Great video, Sam! This brings back memories. My early jam sessions with Rebirth led me getting Reason 1.0 and down the rabbit hole of DAWs and other computer grooveboxes. Where Rebirth really got wild was with mods that changed the sounds and skins. (Many thanks to Peff for all the Rebirth mods he hosted and still keeps online in 2023!)
Awesome! :) I liked the jamming. Your patience for the repetitive soldering is impressive. :)
Your channel is my favorite synthesizer channel on KZread. And its not that I care so much for synthesizers of synth music or the sound. I do love that too. But its so much more about the inspirational passion of the dude whose channel this is. I recognize the passion cause that's how I feel about things I am passionate about. And I can relate to that, so much better and I have come to known about myself is that I need that. People with passion about what they do, what they love.
This is indeed amazing, you are a man dedicated to task, so much wiring to get this going! I started jittering just thinking of how much soldering and wiring you had to do for this epic controller.
Lost days of my life playing about with rebirth, man this brings back memories.
yeah, i remember rebirth, i had it on my parents old w95 pc. I sucked at using it, but it was fun to fiddle around with, this is nostalgic
I lierally almost just started weeping. A real tear. I have waited since 1999 to see this happen, Sam. Thank you so f*n much, you made a dream of mine come true, even if I'm in the States, and I'll never get to touch one. I'm so glad to have donated a little bit to this happening. Not exaggerating at all, not even one bit. I had a real garbage week, too. Family health issues, car trouble, little hassles. THANK YOU for bringing some light into life. SAME WITH THE PIPE ORGAN PROJECT. I wanted to see that happen. FYI, I'm also the other guy with the GR-500/GS-500 that's commented. Nice to see another weirdo, glad to see you actually have the focus and skill I lack. Keep it up! We can we send you some goodies from the states? I have some random Switchcraft components and other good little stuff to mail in a gift package (along with some Reese's Pieces).
u should get an nobel prize for this briliant idea
Rebirth, Acid Music, BBox (remember that?) and Cakewalk 6 were my entries into computer based music. I used to love setting the pattern length on the one of the 303s to 1 and then selecting a note with octave down and slide to make a drone and then program some patterns over the top. Fun times!
I was 15 when RB-338 was released.. I played with the demo version for hours and hours. The point and click of the mouse was daunting enough for me to take up a pen and write Properllerhead Software a letter (in the mail) imploring them to create a hardware controller for their techno software mini studio! They wrote me back saying that they were strictly software company and hardware was not in the plans. but they sent me a RB-338 t-shirt that I wore with total 😎
I love this thing, I can't say I've definitely used it in more of my stuff than anything else but it's definitely close
You made something that does the name ''Rebirth'' justice!!! This is the true Rebirth of a piece of legendary software!! Software that brings back so many great memories!! After all these years, it is finally usable like it should have been all those years ago!!! This is just EPIC!! You are a legend in my book!! (This screams for a DIY Rebirth Controller Kit!!!!)
I remember when Rebirth first came out...at that time it was totally revolutionary! However I spent so many hours trying to get a decent hardware midi controller to play it "live". Could never quite get it there (for the reasons you mention), and alway wished for a standalone hardware version...which would be Incredible.....and here you go and create the ultimate hardware controller for the program! Love your expertise and sense of adventure with all this gear. Thanks!
That mini is a workhorse. It needs to go in the museum.
OUTSTANDING! I just managed to get ReBirth working on my (modern) Ubuntu machine last night using Wine and wondered if anyone else was messing around with this old beast. WOW I RECKON! So amazing!
Such a cool thing. Had this legendary software on my PC 25 years ago.
This was my absolute favorite piece of software its so simple and fun!
This is freakin' amazing! Nice one!! I have spent so many hours playing around on Rebirth! I still have the original CD-rom and manual. Def gonna have to get an old PC and try to get it loaded. Cheers for the inspiration!

4:47 “that ain’t goin no… It might go somewhere but we’re just goin down the road”😂
This is awesome. I used to jam with my neighbour on copies of the ReBirth demo back in the day. Such a fun piece of kit. I'm gonna have to factor a visit to the museum into my holiday plans, for real.
Shame it took 25 years for someone to make this controller. You certainly outdid yourself there Sam, that's a killer controller, and im certainly having a go next time i visit the museum
You guys always have megatons of fun :) Lovely build!
Elsewhere on KZread: Watch my 15minute unboxing of a phone Sam/LMNC: Ive built something unimaginably awesome and oh, I barely mentioned I have another legend here having a jam with it 🤯. Amazing stuff as ever, thank you.
Pimp my rebirth. The synths dragsters Era IS in da game
DIS!!!! Cannot even say how fun it is to watch it working...
Amazing! This blow away my mind!
Oh, I loved Rebirth! I played around with it for hours when I was younger. Awesome!
There is something about having all the musical elements together on one big board that is just alot of fun. It's one thing jamming on a synth, but here you can quickly move over to the drums, sequence and fx, etc.
OMG! I JUST found my bootlegged copy of Rebirth that I found on my last trip home and brought back today! Synchronous! I used the program for simple rhythm loops and things for my demos back in 2006 or so. It’s great but using the computer interface for live is a challenge. I think the designers thought that composers would sit down and fill the banks with loops and then take their laptops and then DJ with the stems they had created. This has been a dream of mine for twenty years and it is marvelous to see. The only thing is that would it be possible to have a shift key for the different banks so that you only needed 12 buttons instead of 48? This design is simpler though so I can see why you went with that. Great job! Fantastic!

I remember messing with this software way back in the day, you could get some really nice sounds out of it. I had one project where the bpm was set really low and it made the note slides super sexy :)
The day that Sam broke the internet with an actuall RB338 controller..! Never thought i would see this 😃 Awesome job 👏🏼
Holy smokes! What an enormous wiring job and great results too. It sounds amazing! You could easily do a live show with just that I think :)
Awesome! your museum is fantastic for a lot of reasons 🙂 p.s. it's a place that also somewhat resembles arcades, you need a "simple" ticket for spectators only (visit duration max. 30 min.) and a special one for geeks, obviously more expensive but with so much more satisfaction!
OMG wanted to do this years and years ago! Very inspirational!
