I Built an Indoor Rainforest for a Zoo

For as long as I can remember, I've imagined designing beautiful naturalistic setups, for cool animals, that people may enjoy in person. I wasn't sure if or when it would happen, but it did. After months in the making and I'm so excited to finally share it with you. This is the journey of how I created a 3-in-1 tarantula exhibit for Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado.
Butterfly Pavilion is the world's first AZA accredited, stand-alone, non-profit invertebrate zoo in the world. They are a leader in local and global invertebrate research, education, and conservation, with a focus on protecting these animals for the future.

We've been planning this for months now and it's one of those videos/projects that really brings things full circle. It's something I've always imagined, but to see it for myself after installation was a surreal experience, to say the least. I was also glad to share my abilities with an organization doing a lot of conservation efforts with invertebrates. Plus, I don't intend to keep tarantulas myself, so it was cool to have the opportunity to work with them. Thank you so much for your support over the years! I work extremely hard to do what I do, but it wouldn't be possible without your support (views, comments, likes, etc). This was literally a bucket list item for me! Appreciate you all so much. Enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad! 💚

I've been going to the Butterfly Pavillion for as long as I can remember. My daugther and I were there a few weeks ago and we noticed the new installation. We spent a good amount of time looking and admiring the work. I've been following you for about a year now and your videos got me into the hobby of building terrariums. When we walked away from the exhibit, I thought "I should go visit SerpaDesign to see if there are any new videos." Low and behold, you're the one who built them! I have so much gratitude for you and the work that you do. I've learned so much from your videos. You truly inspried me and now making terrariums has become something I am passionate about.

Why not partition it yourself. Buy a cheap aquarium/terrarium and some glass panels. I never tried to cut and work with glass by myself but Serpa has shown his tips for that in so many videos. I think you can do it. Just try it and learn while you are doing it. Think about how you can do it and not about why you could not. I know we are not like Serpa but we can try our best with his inspiration as help. I bet you will feel amazing after you tried and created a beautiful diy terrarium. Wish you a nice day☀️

Interestingly, being a subscriber to your channel inspired me to create a naturalistic bioactive vivarium in my workspace. It was originally intended for a sorority of fancy mice, but currently houses one rescued male. Coming from a 'traditional' and small mouse cage where despite having lots of 'commercial' enrichmnent but was he was seldom seen and uninterested in interacting with humans, the change in his behaviour in a naturalistic environment has been incredible. He forages, hunts, burrows, nests and actively seeks out human interaction. While researching bioactive enclosures for his species, everything pointed to 'no' - I wasn't even able to find examples of bioactive habitats in zoological settings. So from Mr Yeet (the mouse) and myself to you - a big thank you for inspiring me to think carefully about his needs and how they could be provided for in a more natural way ❤

Great build. I love the cohesiveness of the 3 tanks to make it look like one.

So cool that you and Jimmy were here in CO! I love the Butterfly Pavilion and haven't been in a few years, so hopefully I'll get a chance to check this out in person soon. Glad you got to see the breeding room!

What an awesome thing!!! Looks like a great place. The build turned out just perfect with that cork bark tying everything together, it looks very naturalistic and the animals seem happy to settle in!

So well executed!! finding a way to create the illusion of the land and the log being whole and moving through the tanks was brilliant! such a cool design and such a major achievement!!
