For the walkways: I would glue magnets under the movable paths and use thin sheet of metal on edges of buildings that the magnets can attach. It would take some work to hide the metal, but basically same way you used to cover the base of your board. This way you can attach the walkways to any part of the structure.

So, how about this: can parts be resin cast with fine iron powder added such that the components would be attracted to magnets? You could cast parts of the roof edge or battlements or similar in this method then add magnets to the walkways. You wouldn't have to hide strips of steel because the components would already by embedded with iron particles.

You can countersink small 3-4 mm neodymium magnets to the tops of the walls where the walkways go, and the same magnets to the bottoms of the walkways so that they "click" into place. Just make sure you get the polarity right! This is such a cool idea, Marco. I'm totally going to steal this for my gaming kotatsu.

Couple of ideas for walkways: You could fit some sort of buttress to some of the walls of the buildings that could then act as a point for the walkways to lay across. Alternatively, what about the edges of the frame? If you're just after storage, magnets installed on the frame could cover it.

Oh man, this sort of thing was my dream when I was 12. I ended up using a large sheet of chipboard which ended up warping due to pva glue. Also, it wasn't magnetized as we didn't have that kind of tech in the hobby back then so I kept my scatter terrain in boxes which greatly limited how much I could have.
