The best thing about old houses like yours is that everything doesn't have to be perfect. there is beauty in imperfections too! it gives the home a soul and character - and you're bringing new life into it. and we love to be part of that journey :)

There’s a quotation from the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh that’s stayed with me all my life … “There is hope in honest error: none in the icy perfections of the mere stylist.” It got me thinking about how we define perfection. It’s mathematically precise, but lifeless and sterile. So therefore it can’t be perfect, can it …?

@@quintadovalepermaculture That's a great quote! I have another one I've kept with me for most of my life: "Always go for decisions that make for a good story." This idea applies to almost everything we do. If everything were perfect, there wouldn't be anything to talk about because we wouldn't notice it. It's the imperfections that tell a story and show that something happened. We can only imagine the reasons behind the result. The same goes for people-we all make bad choices sometimes. We can choose to keep those mistakes to ourselves, or we can laugh about them with our friends. it's also the way we learn and grow. embrace the imperfections :)

I laughed at the look on your face when you said, “and also there’s a bunch of tiny flies in it.” I moved recently and am steaming wallpaper off the walls, then preparing them and painting them. I’m almost 68 and you are such an inspiration to me, I laugh at myself often, but my friends think I should hire help! LOL!! I love to do it and feel so accomplished !

Me too. You have a fewish years on me, but I get doing things for my own, or with friends too, but generally it's me, myself, and I doing the work. Thank goodness, my ex partner from years ago, is still a friend, and a retired building contractor. He gives me lots of advice and helpful hints, and even has done some shop work for me - I don't have a table saw and sometimes it's just better to go get some stuff done with friends who don't mind helping out. I'm grateful that his wife is also not out of sorts with him helping me out - she's a good egg 😊

Dear Rosie, I’m fairly sure that in your beautiful, secluded location, you may not be attuned to the upheaval in the U.S., where I live. I’m a retired widow. I live alone. And today, finding your peace -filled channel, and enjoying your life and accomplishments from here, has brought me much calm. I needed this. I feel so happy just faffing about in my flower garden, and perhaps finding some berries in my yard to bake with, that I can just about imagine upping that feeling to the nth degree.
Another good way to fill up the gaps around the plug in the door would've been mixing saw or sanding dust with wood glue and pushing that in - maybe useful for next time :)

Hello Rosie, My wife and I follow your adventures for quite a while and enjoy your video's loads. How wonderful to watch your friendly slow tv in a time where everything is quick and fast. I'm a housepainter in the Netherlands and use quite a bit of Ottossons' and other linseedoilpaint. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask them. Kind Regards, Han & Lian
your wooden chair would look great painted with the swedish paints.. Use a little less linseed.. you only need that for raw timber. the turpentine drives the linseed into the wood so if there is an impervious finish then that is not going to happen as you have found out? Try again with the recipe for the final coat and you will find it works. Thanks for the vlog, a joy x
@wildrosie
Ай бұрын
Thanks for the input! I did follow the recipe for planed timber that's previously been painted, but I'll use less linseed oil for the door and hopefully that'll do better. The two final coats are completely undiluted so maybe a bit of linseed oil and turpentine for the first layer will be okay.... eeek!

Rosie, thank you for sharing your seemingly private space. You are packing a lot of content in. Your house looks very unique now with plenty of storage. Well done! Hopefully you are gaining some YT monetization for all your efforts of sharing your crafted videos.❤
I'm not a professional and I've never renovated anything with linseed oil paint, I was only painting with art oil paints. But I think your primer might be ok, the paint may run off through excess linseed oil or turpentine - you can try to add less of these, try different proportions. The paint with too much oil will "slide" over the surface and the paint with too much turpentine will run down/drip. The oil paint doesn't actually dry, it polymerizes. Exposure to direct sunlight slightly accelerates the process. The addition of turpentine thins the paint (like oil) and speeds up the process significantly. It usually takes about 2-3 days for a layer of linseed oil paint to by non-sticky and about a week to be fully "dried". Once it's "dry" it should stick to the surface very well. But actual oil polymerisation takes years. It's a long process but the layer of paint should be durable Thank you so much for inspiring me to do more creative stuff and experiment 🤍
I love watching your updates. I meant to mention at the time, but failed too, the shoulder pads in your orange dress gave it a gorgeous 1940's silhouette. Really suited you. Fabulous. ❤

Glad your trailer survived the little incident. I have no doubt the exterior of the house will be much improved come summer. You’re doing a fab job. X
Be sure to handke all rags and brushes with linseed oil very carefully. It is highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Rags and brushes must never be disposed of unkess completely dry or immersed in a closed receptacle of water. Your cottage is glorious!
Thanks to your ability to persist on difficult projects you have inspired me. I started a hand sewn quilt several years ago, now as I watch you work I am sewing this quilt. It is a pattern from the late 1800. Thanks for keeping me company as we work on our projects together.

The staples thing … oh man! Exactly the same here in Portugal. And having gone to all the trouble of ordering up a bulk quantity of staples from the UK (pre-Brexit days) that DID fit, my staple gun promptly broke. So I ended up having to buy a new one anyway … which then left me with a large number of useless staples. “Good enough” is a much more comfortable realm to inhabit. And finishing?! I still haven’t finished my house … 15 years on 😂 You’ve achieved so much already Rosie, and it’s such a joy to watch the care and precision you bring to all you do. @@evinnra2779 after 15 years of building (converting stone barns into houses) I’ve discovered that by the time you get to the finishing straight, problems are starting to reveal themselves with things done at the start. Bad quality materials degrade (more and more common now); water finds ways in; things rot; little animals come to stay …which all then need fixed. I think that’s why they say a house is never finished 😂

I ended up buying a whole new staple gun because they stopped selling the right staples in my country. It was a frustrating purchase because the old staple gun is super nice (it’s a lovely, high-end vintage staple gun that my father-in-law used when building his house), and the new one was really expensive.

The porch looks great now it's tidy, it's like having another room, plenty of room to put plants etc.
Linseed oil hardens with UV exposure, and is slow to cure. If your door is in shadow and the weather is still cold, the linseed oil paint can take days - if not weeks - to fully set, and it will be tacky to the touch for a long time. The window, as you said, is in full sun, and there the paint will set much faster. Best regards from a museum conservator who also lives in a 200 yo farmhouse in southern Scandiavia.
You are quite a “do it yourselfer “ sewing your own clothes and building everything needed for the house.👍😄❤️❤️❤️❤️

The paint colour looks lovely! And yes, linseed oil can take days to dry, especially if you have any humidity at all. The cupboard doors look lovely. Yes, how much nicer it would be if things were more standardized. How frustrating not to be able to finish your doors just for want of staples. Sigh. But it is all looking fantastic. I hope you are really proud of yourself!

It is not stupid if it works. Great job on the cabinets.
You are amazing love seeing your wonderful creations. ❤
a little tip, when you paint over existing paint on a wooden surface (be it window frame, or doorframe or the door itself) it helps to do a light sanding on the surfaces before you apply the first coat, it will give the paint more grip and prevent it from peeling in the sun in the future. (it also keeps the surface nice and tidy looking when you finish)

Agreed. Rosie did sand the door in a prior video and then used primer. This video is showing her progress toward painting over the primer.
Hi Rosie, on the trim around the door that isn’t sticking since you used a different type of primer than the window might I suggest that you just take the color from that paint that you’re trying to use and go in and get a small amount of regular paint that will adhere to the primer underneath. They should be able to match the color and it’s just for that door trim. Everything is looking great and I look forward to your channel weekly. And I love that you just go for it and learn as you go. It’ll all be just fine in the end.❤
I suspect the linseed oil, in first paint coat mix, was to protect & preserve raw wood ❤
Rosie your building skills amaze me. And your filming this by yourself is amazing. Thankyou for sharing your journey ❤
I like the cloth door for the ones with no shelves, but I think it might be nice to see the shelves on some of the others. Maybe use glass or perspex or something to show what's inside....all depends on what's going to be inside of course!! Very nice work, another great video
You are a goddess! I would never dream of getting to your level ... so much work is involved here! You are one very talented woman, Rosie,
Natural ,or lineseed oils is a tempting journey...of patience. A friend once waited for 4 months for a wall to dry. He used one of the "natural " paints that only got back into fashion then. I only know of Falunred for the outside, which is effective ;-)
The THUMBNAIL 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Love your new clothes & the exterior paint colors! Everything looks great! Even seeing your meals make me hungry!
You did well Rosie, remember you know where faults are, but nobody else do, so they dont see it!!! Yes you can get better wood, but it will also be more expensive??? Think about having 2 or 3 projects going at the same time, so you can work with the weather, working in or out!!!
I saw how you installed the linen onto the first cabinet door. I would like to tell you how would I make it. (Althogh I'm not an expert :D) Take the inner frame and stretch the linen on it first. While fixing it watch the threads of the material to be straight both vertically and horizontally. When it is ready, then you can put it into the outter frame.
I’m totally invested in your journey now 😂 I’m a hardcore introvert and I relate with much of what you say/do. But that’s where the similarities stops 😂 I would smash all my fingers with a hammer . Great job! ❤ looking forward to the next video 😊

An easy way to fill holes, or redo pointing, with mortar etc, is to use a disposable icing piping bag. Super easy, very controllable and then you just throw it away. Cheap, too. A roll of 50 is about £9🇬🇧
The cabinet/wardrobe doors look fine to me. I can't see any mistakes.🌲
