I built a big Tesla Coil, but it has a big problem!

Ғылым және технология

This big vacuum tube Tesla coil (VTTC) has some serious power behind it. But does it live up to its "potential"?

    Very nice! Styropyro seemed to have similar issues with his VTTC at first, if that's any consolation! You should talk to Kyle over on "Electromagnetic Farce", he made a really powerful VTTC despite using an even weaker tube. Maybe he'll know what's up with your design!

    Thanks! I didn't think of it in time when I recorded the video, but other than finding a less fragile power source than MOTs, the other thing I want to do is redesign the entire geometry of the primary and secondary. Starting to think coupling is a part of my issue too.

    Primary spaced too far apart in between turns, get fb as close to primary level with secondary turns. Get prox as close as possible without flashover.

  • @CoilLabs

    @CoilLabs

    That is as close as I could get the feedback to the primary without it flashing over, unfortunately. I had a bad enough flashover once that it damaged the feedback and I had to rewind it. Don't have great evidence to support this, but I'm fairly certain the feedback is satisfactory, because I think there's plenty of current in the primary. The steel alligator clips (a source of losses that I want to remove in the next design iteration) that connect to the primary would get quite warm after just a minute or so of running. So I'm thinking 1) coupling is too low and not enough of the energy that seems to be there in the primary is making it into the secondary and 2) the overall "load" is not impedance matched well with the tube and I'm probably losing a lot of power to the plate. So TLDR, I agree the primary (and other things) needs redesigned, but not sure I understand your point about the inter-turn spacing, specifically being a problem though.

    @@CoilLabs you could try AWG insulated wire on a pvc form level with the top of the secondary with the turns directly on top of each other to increase inductance.

    @@CoilLabs thats what i would have suggested too, i dont know how "big" your doornobs really are, but you seem to have high Inductance ( big primary) and low Capacitance... I would recommend shifting this to more Capacitance and less inductance for the same LC Frequency.

    I suggest using JAVATC to design the coil. Its actually made for SGTCs but works fine for VTTCs also. Just ignore the spark gap parts of the program. I have used JAVATC to design several Tesla coils including my 833C VTTC. It looks like your coil is out of tune. I also suspect the coupling is too low because your primary coil is very far away from the secondary coil.

    The fan. reminds me of the trio of turboprops I have on my ion laser. The thing stays eeirly silent till the tube gets to 65 celcius, then whoom - all 3 fans kick into high gear. Its spooky seeing a beam coming out of the chassis while it consumes 1kW+ of power, yet remaining completely silent until it goes into vacuum cleaner mode, Then 5 minutes later (even at full power) the fans kick off again. Bigass lasers are fun :)

    Very good. but there are a lot of things to improve I get 1m output from a gu5b vaccumtube it's a 5kw triode. Im using 4 MOTs in parallel and series and a 12uF doubler. I would also use more diodes like 30-40 10A10 diodes in series and MOVs across evry diode. Also Russian doorknob caps are perfect for tank caps they are rated for 15kv 450pf.

    I bet the space charge causes a negative bias on the tube, you need way stronger feedback and i would also decrease the grid resistor to 1kOhm (220V 60W bulb)

    I think the diode stack probably failed because each diode will have a slightly different leakage current when reverse biased. If one or two of those diodes are a bit leakier than the others, they will take up a small portion of the reverse voltage. That puts excess strain on the other diodes until POP! Sometimes you need to parallel each diode with a resistor. Yes it will leak more in reverse, but it will keep that voltage evenly distributed over the diodes.

  • @CoilLabs

    @CoilLabs

    Жыл бұрын

    That's a good point. There are big transients spikes in staccato operation so whichever of the diodes is the "weakest link" due to different leakage probably went first which then resulted in a cascade failure with the rest of them.

    Hi Darin, thank you, I appreciate that! Unfortunately I can't commit to providing one-on-one help to everyone who asks. It's just not feasible for me; I hope you understand. What I can do is point you to some resources I have used to learn. One of the best, covering all kinds of Tesla coils is Steve Ward's website (www.stevehv.4hv.org/). Also, if you're building vacuum tube Tesla coils specifically, I highly recommend watching videos from my friend Tested to Destruction (www.youtube.com/@T2D.SteveArcs). He's a master at building big VTTCs and he has some good advice in his videos, showing his circuits. I hope this helps!

  • @CoilLabs

    @CoilLabs

    Жыл бұрын

    There are empirical formulas people have come up with to approximate the inductance of coils based on the geometry and number of turns. Just Google "Tesla coil formulas" or "coil inductance calculator" and you'll find several websites with equations for air cored coils. Also a popular tool used by Tesla coil builders is JavaTC (www.classictesla.com/java/javatc/javatc.html) which implements a lot of these formulas and can help you calculate the parameters of your coil.

    Lmao that’s the same power level I got yesterday running my 5kw vttc on one MOT. I am not sure what the problem could be here but I suggest trying out a new different sized top loads because my vttc wouldn’t even run with a top load that size to to some finicky capacitance stuff BTW my tube is 5kw not my power supply. Yet.

  • @CoilLabs

    Yeah that's definitely a good suggestion, thanks! Something I didn't think of when I recorded the video is that I think I need to reconsider the design of the entire secondary and primary. I think coupling is part of my issue as well. Plus RF impedance matching with the tube. That 7kW is going somewhere, just not where I want, lol.

    @@CoilLabs my current clamp says 99 amps 120 volts on my Tesla coil however it draws like under a kilowatt at best and is clearly connected to a 15 amp branch circuit. I was told current clamps don’t work on reactive loads and especially Tesla coils for some reason. My coil is bigger in arcs then yours the first thing I would inspect in this situation is the current clamp itself as that is the most likely source of a massive 5kw’s of lost power. That power has to be making heat somewhere and your setup clearly is not burning up in flames. However mine is solid state so I don’t know due to the microwave transformer isolating the load. I would check the current clamp first.
