I Brought Atari STs To An Amiga Show - Kickstart 02 Vlog

Ғылым және технология

If you enjoyed this video please consider subscribing! It really helps the channel out. 🙂
Kickstart takes place at the Notts County Football Ground and is in its second year. This Amiga show has rapidly become one of the premiere events on the retro computing calendar and this year I was invited along to run my own table all about the shared history between Atari and Commodore.

I bought an Atari 400 in high school, about 1981/82. Had a blast with that machine until about 1986 when I traded it for a car. Fast forward to last month when I bought another 1982 Atari 400 with a Basic cartridge! Just ordered Defender. Am looking forward to some retro gaming!

Great video and loved that we're all just a bunch of old foggies enjoying retro tech 🙂 I had an Amiga when I was a teenager and there was huge rivalry with the ST back then. I have a whole bunch of stuff now including a couple of Amigas and an Atari XE, and my next will definitely be an ST!

You should go to Apple meets with the Atari 8-bits to show them what they were missing when they were paying comparative fortunes for Apple IIs. In the US, you'd get laughed out of most any personal computer store if you asked for any Atari software.

It was lovely meeting you during the day and at the after party Rees, your Atari collection was every bit as interesting as the Amiga exhibits. I was in a room at the Premier Inn, looking at the same bar with that open air party going on - not a 50s fest this year but actually some good tunes being played and a big crowed. Will see you around on RMC discord and hopefully see you again at another event - KS03 if not before! Mike / A1200.

I saw your table as it was the first one as you walk into the room. Had a bit of a shock to see a load of Atari machines. 😀 I never had a problem with Atari ST owners back when I was in school, as everyone had Amiga 500s, so there were no arguments. Or - maybe there were ST owners in school with me, but they would not admit to it!

Great video and even better to meet you on Saturday! You table was my fave out of them all. I;d never seen a Atar 5200 before - its MAHOOSIVE as you say! The old Atari vs Commodore was a playground thing from the 80's. We're all fully grown men now who realise the many close ties between the two companies. We should've have another Atari stand at least next year I say! The highlight of this video for me was seeing Boat with the Jaguar pad for the ST!?! I had no idea there ever was such a controller and I'd have been all over it if I'd been tipped off about it sooner! I'm so sorry I didn't get to show you my Uzebox Omega up and running! I hadn't brought enough USB PSUs as it turned out so I'd been borrowing a USB port on someones laptop to power my Uzebox's Mega Drive 2 RGB -> HDMI converter cable and without that it wasn't happening unfortunately. I will be going again next year for 40 years of the Amiga and ST!. Whilst watching this video I realise that next year or next time I take my Uzeboxes to a show I should leave another Uzebox open so people can see how few components they use.

Ah, so you're the Uzebox guy! I had spotted it on one of my earlier walkarounds - thanks for grabbing me at the end and talking me through it. I've deliberately left the paperwork on my desk in front of me as a reminder to get in touch when I get 5 minutes. 😁 Good idea on leaving one open so we can see the insides, I'd definitely be interested in seeing that.

The old rivalry between Amiga and ST was probably the original rivalry now I think about it which later became a Nintendo v Sega and these days it is Xbox v Playstation. To be fair the old rivalry was always amusing and now I am much older the ST really was not that bad really but Amiga is better :p Honestly the rivalry between Xbox and Playstation seems to be a lot more vicious than back in the days of Amiga v ST but I guess that was because I was looking through the window with kid glasses given I was probably 10 - 12 then.

Thank you for your coverage. It's the best I've seen and really captures the essence of the show. My first computer, a 1040STF got scrapped/recycled. I don't miss it. I can play Blue War III (the only ST game that I miss) on the Hatari emulator included on Pandory V3 for THEA500 Mini. It was a spiteful Amiga wannabe from Jack Tramiel in my view, that thrashed the mismarketed A1000. However, come 1987 it did nothing better than the A500 except come out 2 years earlier, had a slightly prettier case, bundled some MIDI ports on the back and came in out around £100 cheaper (that suckered my parents)! It was nice to see a Falcon at the show last year, that was a true competitor to the A1200! I am actually still a little bit sad my parents didn't stretch to an A500 Batman pack in 1988 instead of what we got! Plus Lemmings 2's sound was an abomination on the ST and on a computer famed for being used in the music industry! That really was the last straw! Glad you got to the show and hope you can see as I have that the Amiga won in the end! We've even recently got Final Fight Enhanced, which puts the awful original ST/Amiga ports to shame, especially in view of the ST's awful horizontal scrolling and the lack of Amiga music! Now the Atari 400 and 800 featuring Jay Miner's chips I have a lot of time for!

I'm allowed to comment since I was an ST owner. I saved up for Lemmings 2 on the ST with my own pocket money and even completed it on the ST! However, in retrospective it was an abomination and the music cutting out for a sound effect to play on my 1MB machine was unforgivable as was the joystick ports being hidden underneath (mine eventually broke even with a Roboshift as they were so hard to reach)! I have respect for the Atari 400 and 800 (due to Jay's involvement and Star Raiders) and the Lynx developers from the original Hi-Toro Amiga Corp Team (they were not really East Coast Commodore types) were legends! Tramiel was an arse but Commodore was built around him and it didn't work as a business without him sadly! The ST was a miracle of fast development and value for money but it became the substandard target platform which meant the Amiga didn't shine until about 1990 when Team17 and others pushed 1MB only games with no ST ports. I loved Batman The Movie, Gauntlet 2, Rainbow Islands, New Zealand Story, X-Out and Turrican etc but the Amiga did it all better and Canvas was no Deluxe Paint! I stand by my comments.
